...but SkyDog banned me.
Front Office Hockey -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sollecismic Software is proud to announce the release of Front Office Hockey. With the lack of professional hockey in North America due to the lockout FOFH is the Sollecismic Software attempt to fill the void. Since there seemed to be such a demand for Front Office Curling, (and the fact that they both use ice) it will be included as part of the new game. Front Office Hockey is the latest in Solecismic Software's award-winning series of general manager simulations. Orders may now be placed through http://www.sollecismic.com. The game is sold only through electronic download. Last edited by Ben E Lou : 11-17-2004 at 07:58 PM. |

You have to bring something better than this. Hack in and get Jim's password or something.

I saw the double L Solecismic signed up, and that the member just joined today but had all of his info and knew this "new member" was going to do something like this.
That is why I pinged him in an earlier thread.

I'm glad it's bogus. Considering the state of modern hockey, I would have been POd had this really been Jim's next game.

Franklin posted that pic of the kid at the finishing line in the special olympics, you've probably seen it before. Apparently the funny bone part of FOFC has been removed. |

I didn't really find it offensive, just really fucking stupid. Franklin gets more and more unoriginal each and every day. Sorry, bud.

The pic was more in bad taste than offensive. I've laughed at a couple special olympics jokes that were bad but not really meant to do harm. I had a retarded friend when I was a kid. I was like 8 and he was close to 20, but mentally around my age. He was pretty cool back then, but moved. I also worked with retarded kids and my own father was retarded at the near end of his life (not breathing for about 20 minutes will do that to you) I feel that something is offensive if it is meant to mock those who can't defend themselves. My g/f calls me a retard, but I don't find it offensive, the pic was in bad taste, and close to the line that needs to be drawn. Good call SD (2 for 1 thread... not bad!) Let's just hope there's not a rash of impostors. And if there are, let them have better material!

So wait, if he had called it retarded instead of showing a picture of a retarded person it would of been ok with you? I don't get it.

Saying "That's retarded" and using a pic of a kid are two completely different things. It's like the difference between saying "That's so gay" and using a picture of a guy who is in an act which most of us don't want to see. I get that the pic wasn't meant to be exploitive or abusive. It was just bad taste...

SkyDog, can you make one thing clear for us?
If you removed Franklin's post because of the picture and your thread about not posting inappropriate for work pictures then we all should accept that this was the perfectly correct decision based on that. If you would have removed the post if it were text or if you would have penalty boxed someone who had the text in their signature simply because someone found it offensive that would be another thing. I think the first impression of the words in your edit implied the latter but you never said it and I can honestly see the point if it's about posting an inappropriate picture. Whether you find it offensive or not ( and I don't ) it's pretty hard to argue that it's appropriate for a work environment.

Fair question, Axxon.
I didn't consider the pic non-work-safe. However, whenever something gets multiple complaints for being tacky offensive (both within the thread and privately to me in this case), I'm generally going to take a look at it. In this case, several people who don't normally complain about anything expressed the feeling that it was inappropriate. My personal opinion was that it was near enough to "the line" (wherever that is) to be in questionable taste, and combining my personal opinion with the number of complaints that I got in a short period of time, I went with the ol' "When in doubt, throw it out" rule. I didn't put Franklin in the box for it, because I didn't feel it was clear-cut that it was malicious or in extreme poor taste. I just made sure that he saw the public complaints. Make sense?

It makes sense but honestly I'd have preferred it to have been because of the picture. It is a more cut and dried interpretation IMHO. It's one thing for us to be respectful of those of us at work and yet another when we start censoring posts due to content that don't violate the already established rules about personal attacks, etc. Tacky has never been a criteria for post deletion and Couriers midget thread was far more offensive than this picture. ( none approach the ant and the sock and I don't recall any discussion when you took action there. ) I've disliked, and approached the state of being offended by a lot of stuff I've read here but I'd never dream to complain except for the Bragg stuff and even then I didn't because I trusted others would. Of course, he used pictures. To me, moving on with my life was more important than self righteously trying to impose my moral standards on others. I understand that you have to make these decisions when they arise and I don't feel you made a knee jerk or wrong decision necessarily based on your criteria but it does seem like another step down the slippery slope of political correctness that could eventually make this board so vanilla that it's not worth visiting. I don't envy you your job. Oh, and to everyone who was offended by the picture, go answer your phone, I think it might be a life calling and you really need to get one. Of course, it could just be some mean old troll who might say something that might offend your delicate sensibilities so you better take an adult with you for protection.

I see where you're coming from, Axxon, but the bottom line for me is that it is quite rare that a post gets multiple complaints (I'm guessing less than once a month). And honestly, I don't recall getting as many complaints on anything as I got on this in a very long time. Couple that with the fact that we have members who have special needs children, and it made it a rather easy call.

I'm sure if the tables were turned, you could find something which will offend you, and I could tell you that it didn't offend me, but that would not mean that it wasn't offensive. I think Skydog has to make that judgement call and, especially given that other members complained both in the thread and privately, it was an easier call for him.

All message boards are different, and I have no problem with SD making a judgment call that a pic like that is considered offensive to this "community" as whole. On another board I frequent, that same pic was someone's avatar for a few months, and the only comments it drew were LOL and the like. Just depends on the community.

He was wrong, he knows it and apologized. I don't think his intention was to offend anyone, just to make fun of the person who thought it would be a funny joke to sign in as Sollecismic and release a fake game.

What I never understand is that it seems as though both Skydog and Franlinoble have no problems with the picture removal. Why then does the debate continue?
EDIT: OK, my fault. I have now bumped this thread to the top. I will admit being just as guilty. Last edited by panerd : 11-18-2004 at 03:00 PM. |

I think that he would feel different if a picture of his kid or brother were used in a similar situation, if he were unfortunate enough to have someone close to him who had a problem. But, alas, he is lucky enough to not know what it is like...
