Alex Smith, QB, Utah - Brash yet smart

"Put us in the Big 12 North," Utah's junior quarterback said, his rant just beginning. "Put us in the Big East. Put us in the ACC. Put us in the Pac-10."

Gee, he seems to have left out the Big XII South and the SEC. I wonder why that is.

I think this is more amusing:

Heisman Watch
1. Jason White, QB, Oklahoma
2. Alex Smith, QB, Utah
3. Cedric Benson, RB, Texas
4. Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma
5. Jamario Thomas, RB, N. Texas

As if...

Wow. 64 college credits in high school? My respect for this kid continually grows.

Does he really think they could hold their own in the ACC, or the Pac-10, or even in the Big East?

I think Utah would win the Big East. Not saying much but I believe it.

I think Utah could hold their own in the Pac-10. I bet they'd challenge Cal for 2nd.

They could, but I think it wouldn't exactly be easy.

I agree with you. Of course, I also think that my crappy men's league flag football team might be able to win the Big East.

Meh...my freshman year at VT, I was in honors engineering with a couple of guys from one of the magent schools in Virginia. They both already had 40+ college credits upon their high school graduation due to the curricumlum, but their knowledge didn't seem any better than anyone else in program. It seemed to me to be more of a product of the school you went to, rather than any sort of personal education.

Of course, it just means he took a bunch of AP classes and the tests that go with them. My school only offered 3 AP classes, Smith's must have offered a lot more. Or maybe he did CC while in high school, if that's even possible.

Jamario Thomas would be a solid 5th place vote for the Heisman. The kid has put up ridiculous freakish numbers. If not for 2 carries against Texas before Cobbs was injured, he would be averaging over 213 yards per game.

LOL...

As you may or may not know, it's Rivalry week here in Utah.

U of U vs BYU. I am BYU fan, and BYU will get steamrolled this week by the U.

However, they U of U defense does have a major weakness, and that is their interior defense vs the run. I think Alex is rather brash in the article, right now, I think a lot of schools could beat them in the conferences he names....I also think they are just a bit away from shocking people and if they bring it all together and play their A game, they could beat the top teams out there too.

Have you seen what the kid has done? He's an 18 year old true freshman that was supposed to be a backup to last year's NCAA leading rusher Patrick Cobbs, but when Cobbs got hurt he came in and has torn things up. He has rushed for over 200 yards in 6 games so far and is leading the nation in rushing yards despite only getting two carries against Texas and NO carries against Florida Atlantic.

Jamario is a STUD...

You get college credit for taking honors high school courses now? What kind of B.S. is that? Inflated SAT scores and free college credit makes me cranky!

Jeeber -

The no carries against Fla. Atlantic doesn't hurt him because the NCAA ranks players by yards per game and if you don't play, it doesn't count as a game.

The 2 carries against Texas hurt him, though.

I think Jeebs was referring to the fact that he has the most total rushing yards in the nation and certainly not having any carries against Fla. Atlantic affects that.

North Texas is a predominently running team. Those are comparable to Sonny Cumbie #s at Texas Tech. Jamario is good, but he isn't great.

No, you have to take AP level classes and then take the AP (Advanced Placement) Test and get a certain score.

What's the difference between AP level and honors? They had AP tests back in my day, you just didn't get college credit for doing well on them. Or at least I didn't.

In my school AP dorks were picked on on a daily basis, while honors dorks were only picked on once or twice a week.

Joking. Calm down....

Honors means you don't get to take AP tests, which are on a 1-5 scale. My school offered 3 AP classes.... my girlfriend's offered around 15 at her count.

I know if I had gone to a state school, I would have had around 30 college credits for AP tests and college classes I took through Winthrop. Unfortunately the school I went to didn't accept any of them (need 4 or above on the AP's and got all 3's, and they wouldn't accept the college classes)... I could have been out of there in about 2.5 years.... oh well, I would have just done nothing the whole time and gone 4 years for no reason.
