Alex Ochoa in Japan
I just dont understand why MLB players would want to go over to Japan to play. Sure i know its the money probably, but Ochoa, i feel, is a fairly solid player to have coming off the bench. I find it hard to believe he couldnt find a spot on someones roster here in America.

He had a spot coming off the becnh for the Cardinals. But the Japanese club offered him a ton more money to play over there.

if some company in Japan offered me twice as much to go over to work I would do it in a second. Those ma and pop, hole-in-the-wall Ramen restaurants in Japan make the best food I've ever had in my life....

Yea i know he'll get the money and be a superstar and all. I really just dont get it. I guess its just me though. I know i wouldnt want to go across the country to a culture i have no clue about and cant speak the language when you can be making a great chunk of change here in the US. For some reason this just really annoys me. I'm sure all MLB players will take the fact that this annoys me into account when they are offered a contract in Japan.

I don't see what you don't get. He is going to get more money and more fame over in Japan. Plus if he really loves to play abseball this gives him the opporunity to play every day instead of just coming off the bench now and then.

I get the money and fame part. But this is the MLB he had a chance to play in, the best competition in the world, and he can do a decent job at.

They also have sushi restaurants where you eat off the naked body of a young attractive japanese woman. You have to factor that into the decision.

Dang it. I had more hope for him than Palmeiro.

It's ok they don't need him. He would have provided some nice pop coming off the bench, but Perez will be just fine in that role.

[shudder] Perez, how many chances does he get with our team?[/shudder].
Honestly, I hear his presence in the locker room is great, but I almost feel like he's our poor man's Shawon Dunston.

I like Perez. He struggled at times last year, but he had several clutch home runs including one in the playoffs. I think if your just looking for some pop off the bench he is good for that.
Plus once Drew is ready you'll have Marrero on the bench too so there isn't a lot of need for Ochoa.

I'm curious as to why he WOULDN'T do it.
First off, he's already played in the bigs. 685 games worth. It has netted him a minor league contract. (yes, I know he would have had a spot on the roster regardless) He's a 31 year old bench player who will probably never have a major payday in the big leagues. He now gets the chance to make a big chunk of change that should take care of him and his family for the rest of his life, be a star player, and play everyday for what will probably be his last couple of years as a full time player. If it doesn't work out, he can come back and play a couple of more years as a spare outfielder/DH. Seems like a no brainer to me. TroyF |

I think we have established the fact that he shouldnt because 1.) its a VERY long cross country drive and 2.) it annoys me.
Just kidding of course. Those are some good points you bring up Troy. |

No denying that Ochoa is a nice player to have come off the bench, but you guys really aren't doing badly with Palmeiro.
As an Angels fan, I am really going to miss O. That guy could be plugged in anywhere in the outfield, and not only is he guaranteed to give you good defense, he will also likely hit .300. He is the total team player, never complaining one bit about having to play second fiddle to a steady stream of ANgels outfielders. And he's a great pinchhitter, too. Signing both Ochoa and Palmeiro was overkill anyway. I mean, how many ex-Angels do you guys want to have? Chief Rum

Amen! I'm a HUGE fan of Palmeiro. No, the guy isn't a superstar and most likely not even an all-star. But he's a damn good player who contribute a lot to his team. I hope he eventually gets a season where he gets 400-500 ABs. I think he could be a really solid #2 hitter. |

Well, y'know, with JD Drew as the RF . . . the 4th OF (in this case, Palmeiro) is guaranteed to get at least 300-400 ABs.
Same fact holds true for all team that expects Brian Jordan and Reggie Sanders to be their full-time OF. Personally, I think some team should get both Jordan and Sanders and slot the two of them for one OF spot. One complete season! Hooray! |
