(Poker) Well.. one of us will be at the WCOOP ;)
That's the World Series Of Online Poker (Pokerstars)
I just won (really finished top 2, but I had most chips so I consider it a win) a $14+1 "Double Shootout" (81 players, the winner of each of the 9 beginning tables advances to a final table, where two qualify) for Event #5 at PokerStars's WCOOP. It's a $500+30 NL Hold Em slugfest, and it's the 1st of August. $500,000 is guaranteed, but there will be a LOTmore then that, because this thing gets HUGE. But I am SO dead money. Why? Because, amongst other entries in this NL Holdem event... is Greg "Fossillman" Raymer. You know.. the guy who just last month, took home the $5 million dollar first prize at the REAL DEAL? The World Series of Poker? God.. I dunno whether to take my $530 in tournament money, sell it for $400-500 real money.. or try it. What's the worst that could happen? Don't answer that.

You know we had a conversation about this on anothe board. What do you do if you win a 10K entry to the WSOP? You know you got lucky, you consider yourself dead money. Do you sell your entry or go play in it and take your shot? You can get say 9K for your entry no problem.
I'd play in the tourney myself, espicially yours foz. You've played well in some large tourneys. |

I'd definitely play. Think of it in the same way you think of a present for an upcoming holiday..."something you would want, but would never buy for yourself."

The last time you asked this question, you parlayed $40-50 into $1,125. And it was the most fun I've ever had watching anyone play.
Hell yeah you should play. FossilMan will know on that day what FOFC is all about. That is, until he busts you out with pocket rockets and his reptile glasses. We'll be watching, dude. Good luck!

There is an article on ESPN's page 2 by their "Jackpot Jay" who played in a tournament with Raymer after the WSOP. Jay made the final table and Raymer did not.
Play the tourney. |

Well done, and Good Luck if you decide to play Foz... and not to threadjack, but just a quick question regarding the WCOOP, is it exclusively run on and using Pokerstars (as I'm inferring from your post)? Or are other sites in on the action as well?

as far as I know.. it is totally a PokerStars creation.. which is a sign of how big online poker has gotten:
Last year, when PokerStars hosted the 2003 WCOOP, there was 11 events, and almost $2.8 million in prize money. This year, there is already *4 Million* dollars in prize money guaranteed. It does help that this year's main event is 2500+100, last year's main event was $1000 buy in, and if this year's main even MATCHES the 891 entries, it will be worth $2,227,500. Personally I think that will be double or triple that amount.

Let's think this through. Let's say that there are 99 players in a tournament who are all people like Sir Fozzie ... players who dabble online, win here and there, maybe most fo them are "plus players" and they all won their way into this event through some sort of qualifying events. Then you add one hotshot tournament professional ... whoever is the most intimidating player of all.
What is the likelihood that the hotshot wins the event? If a random player starts out with a 1% chance, does the hotshot win it 2% of the time? 10%? 25%? 50%? 75%? I don't see how any one player can be much of an intimidating factor in any single event. Over the course of maybe 100 tournaments against the best field the superstar might have the best overall record... but so many thing can happen in one event, it's silly to worry about any one player. Fossilman might have a 5% chance of winning the event I described above... that still makes him quite a longshot. Good luck, Foz. |

Look at it this way--would you rather have the money or the fun of playing in the tourney? If someone offered you a $500 night on the town or a seat at the table, which would you take?
Don't worry about whether you are dead money. Think about what a seat at the table is worth to you. |

I'm going to play it, after all, all I REALLY have invested is $15 for the double shootout. I might play a couple more tournies and see if I can get more WCOOP$, now that I'm in.. but when you consider it.. $15 and several hours of effort for a chance at a 200K+ Payday (Admittedly, I'm the longest of long shots, but you can't win unless you play)..
I should start up a AIM Chatroom so you can play along with me Also: If anyone ever wants to kibitz, or even challenge me to a game sometime or whatever.. send me a IM or something. I always enjoy (well.. not always, but at least Most of the time) talking poker. Ask RPI-Fan.. he was sitting in on some of my past tournies..

Since this thread brought the WCOOP to my attention, I've entered the 'double shootout' that's currently running.
Wish me luck - No Limit is definitely not my strength. |

the first tables took a while, I was done in about 35 minutes, but a couple tables lasted past the first break.
Once you get to the final table it speeds up. remember.. although 7 place out of 9 at the final table, it jumps from $15 for third to $530 entry for 2nd So you gotta play it like it's a SnG you need to win

I've made it to the first break at least. However, only 1 table has finished the first round, and there are still 26 people alive on the other 8 tables.
3 are on mine, where I've got a pretty decent chip lead over the other 2 players. I'm at about 6,500 and they are both at ~3,500 |

Just relax. Play tight/super agressive. They feel the same way you do. They want to play from a position of strength. Make a few low level bluffs. You can still afford it
