Expansion Draft I went after defensive talent here, but also recognize that expansion talnet isn't the kind of talent worthy of the dominant franchise I intend to build and therefore spend the last 15 picks or so on cheap guys and guys whose contracts will run out after this season. After the draft, KC offered a 5th-round choice for TE Jared Myers. With Myers in the last year of his contract, I accepted the offer. Free Agency Period With a strong "D" as my initial goal, I go after All-Pro LB Jesse Grant. He signs a 4-year, $34.5M deal Week 2. Here are my 3 WK 11-20 signees: T Kenny Cedeno: 4yrs,$8.25M QB Jerry Corbett: 4yrs,$14.04M S Deron Newton: 3yrs,$13.5M Amateur Draft 1(1) T Byron Krieger, Butler 2(1) RB Joe Washington, Illinois 3(1) C Kevin Hadavi, Tennessee Tech 4(1) FB Dale Gullett, Rutgers 5(1) QB Thomas Larimer, Alabama 5(17) WR Freddy Lincoln, Quincy University 6(1) RB Dale Harding, Miami(FL) 7(1) LB Howie Anthony, North Texas With an expansion team, I believe in going after "best available". Krieger looks like a franchise T, and Washington's endurance of 84 should allow him to be a workhorse back. After the amateur draft, I sign one-year deals and get up to 70 players. (Note: I signed three guys to contracts of more than one year, but remembered that rule before I was done with all of the signings. I dropped them all before proceeding to training camp. Just mentioning this now.) Post-Training Camp I had no real busts or breakouts from the draft. I get offered a 7th-round pick by Cleveland for one of my FA pickups, CB Roman Gunn. I accept the offer, then cut 16 more guys to cut the roster down to 53. Here they are: From the desk of Wesley Harper of the Richmond SkyDogs Regular Season We went 4-12. Points Scored: 190 (OUCH!) Points Allowed: 335 (not bad) Neither QB did much. Larimer had a 56.5 Rating in 11 starts, Corbett a 61.9. RB Washington was decent with 221 carries for 913 yards. During the postseason, I extended DE Ronald Jones' contract for two more years. New England beat Chicago 24-14 to win the Super Bowl. None of the SkyDogs won awards. Free Agency Period My priority is to improve at offensive guard so Washington will have some room to run and my defense won't have to be on the field so long. I go after G Jermaine Walters in the first part of the free agency period. He signs a 4yr/$30.5M deal in Week 6. Got 2 starting DT's. 5(3): QB Wade Hicks...has very nice-looking potentials in everything except for 3rd Down Passing (34). Could use him as a starter and run more on 3rd down. 6(3): DT Vincent Gunn...good run-stopping backup DT 7(3): QB Rico Stargell...hey, i need a QB...maybe he could break out 7(21): G Derrick Daley...roster filler After the amateur draft, I re-sign a few of my own RFA's and some undrafted guys to get the ol' roster to 53. Postseason Info Atlanta beat Indianapolis 30-24 to win the Super Bowl. He is a 7th year man with 3 as a starter with a career QB rating of 89.5. Gotta get him. He signs a 5yr/$102.M deal in Week 4. YES! Here's who I get in the later rounds: LB Jerome Roberts WR Charles Mallory P Jamie Lockwood (no talent left worth the money at other positions, and I can use a good punter) Amateur Draft 1(3): DE Freddie Sperr. With ratings of 41/98,42/78,85, he could be a great one. 2(3): LB Lenny Shepherd. Solid ratings everywhere. 76 endurance. 3(3): DT Fernando Argentati. 26/92,12/49,78. Could be that run-stopping DT that every team needs. 4(3): S Trent Sprotte. Could be a starter in a couple of years. Nice potential ratings. 5(3): K Ed Walker. Pretty good kicker. Haven't had one of those yet. 6(3): RB Jeffrey Brock. Pretty solid backup RB. "Redliner." 7(3): WR Bryan Bishop. Another redliner. After the amateur draft, I re-sign a few of my own RFA's, cut some guys and sign some undrafted guys to get the ol' roster to 53. I went ahead and cut DT Haugen, last year's 1st-round bust. I'll take the big cap hit next year while I can still afford it. By the way, I came up with a way to get around the "you can't get the roster up to 53 with all those RFA's" situation. All of this despite RB Joe Washington missing 10 starts due to an early-season injury. The defense holds Dallas to 123 yards and 6 first downs and we win 10-3. Divisionals vs. Philadelphia Our run ends, but not without a fight. Philly hits a field goal as time expires to send it to OT, where they win 37-31. Joe Washington, RIC, RB - 27 carries for 188 yards, 2 TDs. All in all, a great year. We have now arrived as a force in the league. I re-sign C Hadavi so his contract doesn't run out. Indianapolis beats Philly 34-3 to win the Super Bowl. Here's who gets cut/renegotiated with and why: QB Jerry Corbett: cut. $4M is too much to pay for a crappy backup. I'd rather take my chances with a rookie. FB Dale Gullett: extended. He's been a fine blocking back and the contract he was asking for actually saves me $500K in cap room this year so I went ahead and did it rather than waiting for after the regular season. DT Leonard Money: cut. He just isn't worth $5.5M in cap room. If I can't find a GOOD DT or two, I can at least use the younger guys I have on the roster at <$1.5M LB Jerome Roberts: cut. One of my undrafted FA's from last year has had potential ratings improve dramatically. I want him to start. S Donovan Fields: cut. Again, one of my RFA's will be better-rated and cheaper. I sign one of my RFA's, LB Scott Clements. He's the one with breakout ratings. He gets a 3yr, $17.8M deal. I also sign RFA S Harold Barber for a 3-year, $10.18M deal. OK. Now to the FA pool. My biggest positions of need are CB and DT. I get CB Kendrick Hanson in the first half of free agency for $24M over 3 years. Here's who I get in the later weeks: DE Mickey Kendrick: 3yrs, $21.48M. I also sign my franchise player, S Deron Newton, to a 3yr,$19M deal. Amateur Draft 1(28): CB Ralph McElroy. 38/100,21/65,26/82,56. Starting cornerback if all goes well. 2(28): T Pete Wallace. 42/83,41/72,50. Looks like a starting RT to me. I'll cut my current one. 3(28): DT John Enis. 21/60,16/68,68. I might make him my starter this year. 4(28): DT Arnold Steffen. 48/69,19/41,50. Looked at him last round. Enis better long-term, but never can hurt to have depth in the DL. 5(28): QB Robbie Bauer. Pretty decent ratings. 92 in 3rd Down Passing. Solid backup? 6(28): G George St. John. 28/61,16/53,54. Heck. A potential starter this late. I'll take him! 7(28): S Toby Powell. Pretty good option at safety. A banner draft! Potential starters even in rounds 6 and 7. Major cap problems though. I end the draft with 39 players and $310K over the cap! I have to make some serious cuts. I go after guys who are starters with backups nipping at their heels and backups making too much. Here's who gets cut and what I save under the cap: QB Wade Hicks: $1.09M. Would have been #3 QB. C Horace Sandberg: $1.36M. I can find a better rookie backup for a lot cheaper. T Kenny Cedeno: $2.75M. I'll go with rookie Pete Wallace at starting RT. DT Vincent Gunn: $1.09M. Don't need 5DT's. LB Lenny Shepherd: $1.42M. Last year's 2nd-round pick doesn't look like he'll ever start. S Harold Barber: $2.67M. I just re-signed him as a RFA earlier this year, but 7th-rounder Toby Powell looks a lot better, and is cheaper. These cuts and one contract extension (LB Jesse Grant) get my cap room to $13.72M and 33 guys on the roster. I can now afford to sign 20 first-year guys to fill my roster out. Then we manage to rattle of SEVEN consecutive losses. We rebound to close with three wins, but miss the playoffs. ARGGH! Key numbers: QB LaTendresse--271 for 449 (60.3%) 3161 yds, 24TD's, 9INT's, 91.1 QB Rtg. It certainly wasn't HIS fault we missed the playoffs. I think I'll throw more next year. I feel for you on the bust - I had a third pick in my second year (a linebacker) go bad and he sat on my cap for 5 years to the tune of 45 million dollars. I couldnt cut him early because the cap hit would have accelerated to between 20-25 million!
Interesting that our busts share so much in common - second year, third pick.

Decent redliner. 7(22): G Heath Sellers. One of my starting guards, Jermaine Walters, is overpaid for his weak performances. Thinking about cutting him. Sellers might even start at RG. I go ahead and cut Jermaine Walters. His ratings have remained decent, but his performance has been weak. His KrBPct was 19.4 his first season with me, 22.9 last year, and he gave up 7 sacks each season. Not enough performance for a guy costing me $8M in cap room. Bye-bye, Jermaine. Cutting him gives me room to sign players to get up to 53. Among these is one RFA who I sign to a 2-year deal, backup center Otis Lewis. Post Training Camp No busts or breakouts. #1 pick Snider's ratings remained almost identical to pre-training camp. Here's the roster: From the desk of B.J. I enter free agency with $4.3M room under the cap and I need $8.8M for the draft. The good news is that if necessary I can get by with my current personnel as starters, although I would like to improve at Free Safety. I begin to improve my salary cap situation by checking all of the guys in the last year of their contract to see who will renegotiate a deal that offers them less cap money. Here's who gets re-signed at this point and approximately how much cap room each deal saves: LB Jesse Grant: $800K S Deron Newton: $1M FB Dale Gullett: $700K I also made a few cuts, all guys in the last year of their contract: G George St. John: $2.15M. Heath Sellers is ready to take over. LB Scott Clements: $6.34M. With LB Grant injured most of last year, Jim Snider got a chance to show his stuff. With Grant healthy, Clements is the odd man out at LB. CB Nicky Bauman: $6.86M. With cap room as tight as it is, I can't afford to pay a backup as much as I was paying Bauman. All of this leaves me with $25.2M in cap room available with $8.8M needed for the draft. I estimate that I can afford to spend only $5.5M in cap room on free agents this year. With two pretty solid WR's under contract, I am willing to let franchise player Terry go if I can find a starting safety (and besides, I'd have to cut another player or two to be able to afford Terry anyway). I make an offer on a 5th year safety from that fits my estimated salary availability, and he signs with me! He is Freddy Henry. His key ratings are 66/82,74/93,68/89,42, and his overalls are 64/78. I make no offers in the later weeks. Amateur Draft This is the first year I go into the draft with no big-time holes to fill. I do need a punter, and it would be nice to get a solid 3rd wide receiver. Otherwise I just need depth. Here's who I draft: 1(34): WR Mitch McDaniel. He has an 87 rating in 3rd-Down Catching, and potentials of 75 in catching and 97 in catch frequency. Looks like that 3rd WR I was looking for. 2(34): LB Charlie Peek. Should be a solid LB. With LB's getting old he'll be good to have. 3(34): P Edgar Bostick. Needed one. Got one. He's a good one. 4(34): C Geoff Alameda. 22/70,17/60,74. Should develop into a solid starter in a couple of years. 5(34): LB Doug Page. Pretty decent redliner to provide depth this year. 6(34): G Dennis Lyght. 10/43,8/56,38. Will back up for me. 7(34): G Ernie Corbett. Redliner to provide depth this year. Overall I feel pretty good about the draft. I sign RFA's to get me up to 53. Post Training Camp No real busts or breakouts. #1 pick McDaniel's ratings went up in 3rd down catching, but dropped in catching and catch frequency, but no huge moves. New scout is excellent at DL, so I’m going to trust him here for a potentially very good player this late in the draft. 7(30): WR Anthony Abrams—Filler. I feel good about this draft. I sign youngsters to get me up to 53 afterward. Post Training Camp No busts or breakouts. Nice drafts the past two years - that QB you took in 2025 looks like a potential starter.
The crash you suffered is exactly what plagued me the last two seasons - finish a season, go to look at Individual Statistics, and BAM -- crash - not a system halter - just enough to shut down the game... I like the smashmouth style you have going ...you should have known your QB would have been an injury-pansy with a last name like that

Looks like I finally have a viable option to replace LaTendresse when he retires. 3(12): FB Gabe Neely. He could be a VITAL part of our offense in the coming years. 100 potential in ypc, 75 in run blocking, 80 in short yardage and catching. 4(12): RB Anthony Samuels. In case the Galloping Greek fizzles out, this guy has 100 potential in ypc and 90 endurance. Could be a workhouse back. 5(12): QB Eddie Barker. Another pretty solid-looking QB to help prepare us for LaTendresse’s retirement. 6(12): TE Marlon Jamison. Pretty good backup. 7(12): G Bubba Connell. Pretty good for this late. 9/42, 10/42, 56. RB Papadopulos—192 for 795 yds (4.1ypc) 9TD’s RB Samuels—147 for 706 yds (4.8ypc) 4TD’s RB Washington—98 for 347 yards (3.5) 1TD. With the backs being so close in scout assessment, I used a 3-back rotation that was quite effective. WR McDaniel—75 catches for 866yds, 4TD's WR Whiting—53 catches for 672 yds, 3 TD’s TE Perkins—40 catches for 631yds, 4TD’s. Nice performance from the rookie. At the time of his retirement he had the 5th-highest OPct of any active player at 23.4, and he was consistent: his lowest ever was 19.5. He was a 4-time All-Pro, the center of our running game, and he holds the All-Time league record for most Key Run Blocks with 486. He started 240 games. He will be missed. HALL OF FAME C Kevin Hadavi is inducted into the team Hall of Fame. He is still the all-time leader in KRB with 486, a record that should stand for quite some time. No active player has over 400. With Perkins out, we made some adjustments in our offense for the last seven games, going with 3WR’s more often. RB Papadoplus suffered a sprained neck in Game 13 and didn’t come back until the playoffs. CB Brady Riddle had to have elbow ligament surgery after Game 16 and is out long term. I suspect he’ll retire. Perkins re-injures his wrist and is now out long-term. I hope he doesn’t decide to retire. On to the Super Bowl again! Super Bowl Richmond 9, New England 6 THREE-PEAT BABY!!!! This one was tied 6-6 with 0:51 seconds left as the Patriots took over after a punt on their own 5. Instead of trying to run out the clock, the AI threw three incomplete passes then punted. Punt returner Klemen promptly hauled the ball back to the New England 20 yard line. After one play, Hawes hits a 37-yard field goal as time expires and we’re World Champs once again! CB Ross Reeves is the MVP. He played 34 pass plays against their best receiver and gave up only 1 catch and picked off a pass. HALL OF FAME DE Freddie Sperr goes into the NFL Hall of Fame. Look back a couple of seasons for his final stats. He’s still 2nd All Time in sacks with 177. WR Marlon Covington, who played the final year of his career in Richmond, also goes into the HOF this year. RETIREES Here they come! RB Shawn Papadopulos—“The Galloping Greek” was drafted by me with the 1(30) pick in 2028 and was Offensive Rookie of the Year that season. He would be our primary running back for the next 12 years. His best season was 2031, when he carried 292 times for 1625 yards and 11TD’s and caught 48 passes for 467 yards and 4 TD’s. For his career, he had 2887 carries for 12989 yards (4.4ypc), and 107 TD’s. He won All Pro honors once, and one Super Bowl MVP Award. S Norbert Cain—Cain was drafted by me with the 1(30) pick in 2024 and became a full-time starter in his 3rd season. He was a 4-time All Pro, and won Defensive Player of the Year twice. I hope you don't mind me cluttering up your career postings, but I wanted to ask -- maybe I missed it above, or it's in a different thread -- about your defensive strategy.
It sounds like you emphasize blitzing and man-to-man coverage. If you run a 4-3 defense, how do you deal with the potential extra receiver (2 CBs and 2 LBs covering 2 WRs, TE, FB, and HB)? Also, where do you blitz from -- MLB, OLBs, or the secondary? Do you think heavy blitzing hurts your run defense? You've obviously had a very successful defense, yet a strategy that seems to depart from the "DTs stuff the run, Ss pick off the passes" philosophy that others have argued for. |

I don't mind you posting here at all. Nice to know someone is reading. This discussion has to start and end with what I look for in defensive personnel. I *only* look at 2 factors for my CB's and S's: M2M defense and endurance. First and foremost, I want DB's who can stick with their man all over the field all game long. My philosophy is simple: if my 4 DB's can be trusted to cover their best four receivers, then I can use seven guys to harrass the QB and stop the run. To build my defensive line, I first go after DT's who have high ratings in run defense. I don't care about them rushing the passer. They just need to be able to plug up the middle so I can gamble with my MLB on the blitz. I also make sure my DE's are at least decent at run defense. I don't go after these DE's with high pass rush and low run defense skills. As for my blitzing, as I said before, my main blitzer is my MLB. (Notice some of LB McNeely's sack totals in the late 2030's.) It appears that the CPU values run blocking over pass blocking for centers, so the MLB wins this battle (if there is one). So, at that point it is up to stationary back to pick up a great pass-rusher with a full head of steam. I think that is a major disruption to our opponents' offenses. I put my best pass rushing LB at MLB and let him go. I look for guys with decent run defense and M2M defense for my OLB's. Those M2M skills let them pick up the stray RB or FB coming out of the backfield. As for my defensive game plan, it is set at: M2M: 82 Bump and Run: 12 Zones: 2 each There you have it. What results is that despite the fact that I don't even look at INT ratings, my teams consistently are among the league leaders in INT's. I assume that this is because opposing QB's are under constant pressure and are therefore making bad decisions. [This message has been edited by SkyDog (edited 02-12-2001).]

HALL OF FAME No new SkyDogs. RETIREES Several. Here there are: K Chris Hawes—Hawes was drafted by me with the 4(22) pick way back in 2021. I had another kicker with better current ratings who was in the last year of his contract that year, so Hawes didn’t see action until 2022. And what action he saw! He was a 5-time All Pro, and finished his career with 556 field goals, an NFL Record by a wide margin. In addition he was 685 for 695 on his extra points. P Edgar Bostick—I drafted him with the 3(34) pick in 2022 and he was my punter from day 1. He was a 4-time All Pro, averaging 43.1 yards per punt over his career. DT Jeff Watkins—I got him with the 1(19) pick in 2025, and was a full-time starter from 2027 on. He won All Pro honors once, in 2030. He played in the middle of that defense that helped us win 7 straight Super Bowls. His career numbers were 440 tackles, 190 assists, 65 sacks, 38 pass blocks and 53 QB hurries. CB Ross Reeves—I signed Reeves as a 5th-year man. He was a UFA from Baltimore, coming off an All-Pro season in 2029. He was classic lock-down corner for me and was a big help in my Super Bowl run. He won 2 Super Bowl MVP’s. In his career, he had 66 INT’s, ran back 8 INT’s for TD’s, gave up 394 catches in 232 games (less than 2 a game and played the other team’s best WR M2M the huge majority of the time). He had a 36.1PDQ. He was a 2-Time All Pro. DE Claude Hicks—Hicks was drafted 1(1) by Minnesota in 2028. He had 9 strong seasons as a Viking before playing his last 4 years starting in Richmond. In his career, he had 112.5 sacks and was an All Pro once. The good news is that I had already drafted future replacements at DT, CB and DE. I’ll have to grab a P or K in free agency, then shore up the other position in the draft. HALL OF FAME The following three former SkyDogs enter the NFL HOF this year: K Chris Hawes—Hawes was drafted by me with the 4(22) pick in 2021. I had another kicker with better current ratings who was in the last year of his contract that year, so Hawes didn’t see action until 2022. And what action he saw! He was a 5-time All Pro, and finished his career with 556 field goals, an NFL Record by a fairly wide margin, and one that won’t be broken for quite some time as no active player has more than 315.. In addition he was 685 for 695 on his extra points. P Edgar Bostick—I drafted him with the 3(34) pick in 2022 and he was my punter from day 1. He was a 4-time All Pro, averaging 43.1 yards per punt over his career. CB Ross Reeves—I signed Reeves as a 5th-year man. He was a UFA from Baltimore, coming off an All-Pro season in 2029. He was classic lock-down corner for me and was a big help in my Super Bowl run. He won 2 Super Bowl MVP’s as a SkyDog. In his career, he had 66 INT’s, ran back 8 INT’s for TD’s, gave up 394 catches in 232 games (less than 2 a game and played the other team’s best WR M2M the huge majority of the time). HALL OF FAME One former SkyDog enters the NFL Hall of Fame this year…. LB Norman McNeely—He was drafted by me with the 1(12) pick in 2028 and became a starter in his rookie season. He had a brilliant career as the main cog in our potent defense that won seven straight Super Bowls and eight out of nine. His best year was 2035 when he had 95 tackles, 39 assists and 16 sacks and was named Defensive Player of the Year. He was a 5-time All Pro. In 2040, his 13th season, he was diagnosed with Repetitive Concussion Syndrome after Game 2 and sat out the rest of the year. He had an OK comeback at age 37 in 2041, but his abilities had declined significantly, and he decided to call it quits after that season. He finished his career with 987 tackles, 324 assists and 100.5 sacks RETIREES Three SkyDogs hang ‘em up. C Daniel Starks: Starks was drafted 1(15) by Tampa Bay in 2031. He spent 5 years there, never becoming a full-time starter. Then, he spent two years in Philly, followed by four in Denver all as a starter. He was 1st Team All Pro his first year in Philly. He came to Richmond as a FA in 2042, where he played the remaining four years of his career, winning 2nd-Team All Pro honors in 2043 and 2044. All-in-all, he finished his 15-year career with 3 All Pro honors, 357 KRB and a 23.7 OPCT. G Edwin Shanks—He was drafted 1(34) by me in 2031, and spent his entire career as a SkyDog. He became a full-time starter in his 3rd season, and performed very well throughout his career, including a 4-season run from 2035-2038 in which he was 1st Team All Pro every season. All in all, he finished with seven All Pro honors, 373 KRB and a 19.1 OPCT. WR Gary Patel—He was drafted 5(36) by me in 2036. A redliner, he broke out for me and became a starter in his rookie season. He had an all-world game in the Super Bowl his rookie year, catching 11 passes for 174 yards and 4TD’s to win the Super Bowl MVP. He was a very good receiver in my run-oriented offense for the rest of his 10-year career, catching 464 passes for 7356 yards and 40TD’s.
