Exclamation Rickey can speak in the first person!

ESPN article

Rickey Henderson showed up uninvited at an A's fan function, and expressed hisdesire to play for the A's. The most shocking part of it all????
Quote:
"I just want the opportunity to play baseball," Henderson, a free agent after playing in Boston last year, said in response to a fan's question. "I can give (the A's) anything they're looking for. They've got their starting lineup, but I can come off the bench. I can play the outfield if someone goes down. I can pinch hit. I can steal a base. I can score a run.

"There's a lot I could give. I'm educated in the game, and I could help them win."

Of course, if you saw the following quote, you'd assume it was from Rickey and not his agent.:
Quote:
Rickey's more than willing to accept a minor-league contract. If he plays his way out of the game, so be it. But the game can't turn its back on a first-ballot Hall of Famer who's undoubtedly the greatest leadoff hitter of all time.

Rickey Henderson is easily the best leadoff hitter of all time, but he is one of those players who just doesn't know when to let go. He should have retired a few years ago and I hate to see a hall of famer walking around begging teams to let him play.

It's hard to find card games outside of the clubhouse.

I don't know, he had a .721 OPS with an 80% stealing rate last year in limited playing time. I think he'd be a good bench player for a team that has the roster spot. The man can still take a walk with the best of them.

If he can't hit leadoff for the Red Sox then pack it in...

Rickey is still a better fifth outfielder than 80% of the teams in baseball have. The fact that some owners wouldn't give him a contract is absurd.

If you've got one of these crappy low-payroll teams, it's a crime against your fans not to make him a NRI. A crime.

I think he is the best offensive player of my lifetime.

If you look at, hits, runs, power, speed, walks, its unbelievable

and his .280 average is a little low to be the best offensive player in my lifetime, but his avg has taken a hit the last few seasons

I think that Rickey will play for the A's next year, only because he knows the end is near for him. This may very well be his final season and I think it's fitting that he retire with the green and gold.
