Exclamation Ahhh, Tax Season

The Refund Check is in the account today. A big thanks to my two young sons for their efforts in making this day possible.

I'd also like to thank the United States Government for their "mail in rebate offer" reimbursement for all of the diapers, formula and baby food that I've purchased over the course of the past year.

Many thanks!!

I just did my taxes last night. I've tried my best to eliminate as many exemptions as it appears I can on my W-4, but I keep getting bigger and bigger refund checks. I'd much rather have that money during the year. I just filed and I'm supposed to be getting $3,750 back! That's over $300 a month that I could have used to pay off credit cards that interest has been acrruing on for the past 12 months.

I don'twant to get a professional involved to help me (read: I don't want to pay a professional to help me), but maybe I should.

Actually I felt the exact same way when I figured out what my '02 Refund would be.

Time to get someone from my company's HR Dept. on the phone to be some exemption shuffling..

Florida has no income tax. I got to itemize deductions thanks to paying way too much mortgage interest (although that's changed since I refinanced at the end of last year), property taxes, student loan interest, etc. And I have a child. All of that brings my taxable income down like 20 grand.

I actually just happened to luck out this past year. I definitely don't expect much, if any, of a refund in the future..

Ksyrup, just another reason why the Sunshine State is such a nice place to be... No State Income Taxes!!

Taxes? what are taxes? (I love that $70,000 overseas earned income exemption)

I did a quick first run through our taxes (still have a few minor inputs left). After doing my stuff first, it estimated a refund of over $2K. After putting my wife's stuff in, it changed to owing $400. I need some more deductions ... anyone wanna "lend" me some kids?

Hey C-tac, did you try the Jointly vs. Seperately calculations? Made a heckuva difference in my case.

Hey now, you shouldn't be doing that at 19.. Get your ass to the library and do some kind of researchor something if you need to get some time off your hands..

Hmm, for whatever reason, Mrs. MK and I were more successful going the filing married-seperate route.. Gosh, I don't like seeing Mr. & Mrs. MK and the word seperate in the same sentence.. Scary!!

It's all about Karma!!

MK,

Well, they changed the tax laws to make it better to file jointly most of the time, but it still can work out the other way. I also believe that once you file jointly, you MUST file jointly from then on (I may be incorrect about that). This is our first year married, so I haven't had to worry about it yet. I'll check it both ways again when I put the rest of the info into Taxcut.

Interesting.. I wasn't aware that once you filed jointly you could not file seperately again..

Strangely enough, my wife and I have been better off filing Married but seperate for each of the past few years.. Actually I don't believe we've ever filed jointly..

I must be that 1 out of 10,000 exception when it comes to that. If only I could be so lucky when it comes to the lottery.

A new change in minister's tax laws nets me a big refund this year. It should get even better next year when my new little tax deduction is born.

P.S. I don't want to get into an abortion debate, but a friend of mine made a great point. More people would be pro-life if they could take a deduction for yet to be born children.

I am almost done, but have not received a statement from my bank with the interest paid on my HELOC. That is the last piece of my puzzle. And yes, with my house, I have a very nice refund that will let me play CM4 in all its glory.

Seems like no matter what I do, I always get a refund. This year I even worked part-time(20 hours per week) as a consultant for a high hourly rate for several months, and I'm *still* getting a few grand back. I own a house, my wife stays home, and I have 2 children. Do I need to claim *7* deductions???

Texas doesn't have a state income tax either, which is very nice. Going to get a few hundred back, which will be very nice. Now I might be able to get my tired balanced and rotated on my car. Been putting that off for too damn long.

No joke. My parents and brother live out there. The real estate taxes are ridiculous. Not only do I have lower taxes here, but for some reason, they aren't in a hurry to update the appraisal value. I've had my house appraised twice (including once when I bought it brand new), and it's still set at the orginal value they gave it before the house was even built. I'm not even sure how they did it that way, but they did. It's now appraised at $35K more, but they don't care. So my taxes stay low.

We just paid our first property tax bill, and I believe the rate was 24.9 mil (2.49%). The village actually seems to assess pretty close to market value too. Of course, some dumbasses want to secede from the current school district (which is one of the best in the state by the way) and form a new one. They estimated the rate would go up to 2.65% or something along those lines if it passed. Luckily, I think the proposal is dying.
