Not too surprisingly, none of our kids get drafted.

We are offered jobs from 10 other schools, but obviously, we decline them all.

I am happy with the way our coaching staff shapes up, so we make no changes this season.

We hire Hardcourt.com recruiting services, a 3* program this season. That should leave us between 7 and 8 thousand dollars per week to recruit some players.

Our AI generated schedule is pretty brutal, including 3 away games at ranked teams. We will try to change that up and schedule some lesser programs at our house.

We are able to switch out some of those real tough games, but still end up with a few more road games than I would have liked. Thankfully, they are against much lesser competition.

Game 1: MD Eastern Shore at SDSU

They hold us in check all day long, and only Qualls and Allen are able to score in double digits points, with 12 each. We were beat on the glass, 45-36, and lost 62-53.

Game 2: Coppin State at SDSU (0-1)

Greene was our only player to score double digits. He had 16. Everybody else chipped in and we really owned the boards en route to a 66-56 victory, our first of the year.

Game 3: Southeast Louisiana at SDSU (1-1)

Greene has another good day, scoring 18. Walls and Qualls (they need a nickname) chip in with 11 and 10 respectively. Silva pulled down 10 boards and we won easily, 76-59.

Game 4: Wagner at SDSU (2-1)

We stub our toe here when we cannot recover from a 44-29 halftime deficit. Qualls had 19 and Greene had 17 in the loss.

Game 5: SDSU (2-2) at UC Irvine

Qualls and Greene led the way with 16 and 14 points, but we allowed their star, Messy to ring up 23 and we lose on the road, 72-61.

We land our first recruit:

Four Star Shooting Guard, Dexter Edwards, from Sinagua High in Flagstaff, Arizona. Dexter is 18 years old, 6-1, 188 pounds. Hardcourt ranks him as the #16 shooting guard in the country, and the 103rd best player overall in the country.

Game 6: Ark. Pine Bluff at SDSU (2-3)

We fall behind by 5 at halftime, but Silva puts the team on his back and carries us to victory in the second. Silva finished with 17 points and 12 boards. Walls and Greene added 12 each. Walls also had 10 assists in the 76-73 victory to even our record up.

Game 7: Albany at SDSU (3-3)

We held a two point halftime lead, but the second half was all Albany as they doubled us up in the second half en route to a 84-62 win. Qualls had 16, while Walls had 9 boards and 9 assists.

We get some very bad news today.

Art Qualls has decided to leave college after his Sophomore year to enter the NBA draft. Ouch.

Now we have to scramble for another recruit.

Game 8: SDSU (3-4) at Tennessee-Martin

Embarrassing. Qualls had 13, Silva had 11 and the rest of the team didn’t make the road trip. We lose 84-65.

Game 9: SDSU (3-5) at Maine

Our second straight embarrassment on the road. Greene racked up 19, but nobody else came to play. We got beat 80-61 against a real horrible team in Maine.

We land our second recruit:

Three Star SF Will Yeaton. Will is from Delhi High in Delhi, California. He is 6-5, 184 pounds. Hardcourt ranks him as the #40 ranked SF and the 184th best player overall.

Game 10: Cal Poly SLO at SDSU (3-6)

We finally play a game, together, as a team, and show what we can do. Qualls had 22 points. Walls had 17 points and 7 assists. Greene had 8 boards, 2 blocks and 14 points in the 82-67 victory.

Game 11: SDSU (4-6) at UNC-Asheville

We string together our second very good performance in a row. Silva had 17 points and 7 boards. Walls had 7 assists and 14 points. Backup SG, Blair had 15 points in just 21 minutes, and we take the 75-57 win on the road.

Our third recruit gives us his verbal:

Four Star Center, Ferron Cooper from Buhach Colony High in Atwater, California. Ferron is 7-1 and 306 pounds. A real monster. He is ranked as the #25 center overall and the 140th best player in the country.

We are in a huge race for our fourth and final recruit. He is only 4 stars, but ranked as the 40th best player in the country. If we could land him, it would be huge.

That takes us to the start of our conference schedule. We are currently at 5-6.

Game 12: SDSU (5-6, 0-0) at Air Force (3-8, 0-0)

Opening up league play with a win on the road would be huge, but it is not to happen. We give up 40 in each half and lose, 80-67. Greene had 14 points and 11 rebounds in the losing cause.

Our fourth and Final Recruit this season:

Four Star Center, Alex Day, from Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran High in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Alex is 18 years old, 6-11, 214 pounds. He is rated as the #7 Center in the country and the #42 player overall in the country. Welcome Mr. Day!

Game 13: New Mexico (7-6, 1-1) at SDSU (5-7, 0-1)

We are just outplayed from start to finish and fall, 82-66, at home. Porter had 14, Walls had 12 and Blair had 11 in 18 minutes. I really like this Blair kid, but I cannot justify putting him in for Walls, Qualls or Greene. Maybe if things continue to go badly, he will get a shot.

Game 14: Wyoming (9-5, 1-2) at SDSU (5-8, 0-2)

Walls is the star of this game. He had 20 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists to lead us to a big victory and our first in conference. The final was 85-58. Greene and Qualls both chipped in with a dozen each.

Game 15: SDSU (6-8, 1-2) at BYU (10-5, 3-1)

Where were these performances earlier in the year? We beat arguably the best team in the conference, on the road, by 30 points. 83-53 is the final. Qualls had 23 points. Walls had 4 assists and 17 points. Four other players had 8 points each. Greene pulled down 10 boards in the win.

Game 16: SDSU (7-8, 2-2) at Utah (11-8, 3-2)

Silva is the only one to show up for us, as we revert back to form. Silva had 13 points, 13 boards and 4 blocks in the 73-59 loss. Greene added 11 of his own.

Game 17: UNLV (9-7, 3-2) at SDSU (7-9, 2-3)

We defend our home court against the Rebels with a 80-68 victory. Greene exploded for 27 points, and Silva pulled down 10 boards and scored 11 for another double double. Art Qualls hurt his wrist, but will only miss 1 game.

Game 18: UTEP at SDSU (8-9)

We step out of conference for a battle with UTEP. Blair will get the start in place of Qualls today. An all around terrible day for us. We lose 82-71 at home, and Silva fractures his skull and will miss 1-2 months of action. This puts a damper on our chances this year. We are fighting to get to 500 and this has to happen.

Game 19: Utah (13-8, 4-2) at SDSU (8-10, 3-3)

Qualls hurts his hip early in the game and sits this one out. He is likely to miss one more as well. Even without him, we get the big win at home, 77-67. Greene had a double, double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Allen had 17 points in 20 minutes in place of Qualls.

Game 20: BYU (12-7, 4-3) at SDSU (9-10, 4-3)

Missing 2 out of our 5 regular starters hurt us and we drop this one 84-70. Allen led the way with 16, while Greene had 15 points and 10 boards, and Walls added 13.

Game 21: Air Force (6-14, 3-5) at SDSU (9-11, 4-4)

We get back over 500 in the conference with a 77-71 win over Air Force. Walls scored 25 and dished out 6 assists. Greene had 20 of his own and had 9 boards. Qualls added 14 to the cause.

Game 22: Colorado State (10-11, 4-5) at SDSU (10-11, 5-4)

Greene was unstoppable today, as he exploded for 34 points, 15 boards, 4 blocked shots and 3 steals. He was simply unstoppable as we win 86-72. Qualls and Brown each added 11 points, but Walls was hurt, with a sprained wrist again. He is day to day.

Game 23: SDSU (11-11, 6-4) at UNLV (12-10, 5-5)

A great win for our kids, 73-68. Qualls had 19 points and 3 assists. Greene had 15 points and 9 rebounds.

Game 24: SDSU (12-11, 7-4) at New Mexico (13-10, 7-4)

We trail by 7 at the half, but storm back late to tie the game up at the end of regulation. We head to overtime, but New Mexico’s defense shuts us down to the tune of 2 points. We fall hard, 86-75. Greene led the way with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Game 25: SDSU (12-12, 7-5) at Wyoming (12-12, 3-9)

We squeak out a 1 point win to close out our conference schedule, 76-75. Greene and Qualls both scored 20 points in the win.

A win, coupled with a Utah loss will give us a share of the regular season title.

Utah wins early in the day, but we still go out and make a statement by taking this one 90-61 on their court. Greene had 30 points and 12 rebounds.

We wrap up the season with a couple OOC games:

#1: SDSU at Howard

We lose all the momentum we were building as we lose 69-61 on their court. Greene had a double, double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

#2: SDSU at Penn State

We drop another 80-66 and we limp into the MWC conference tournament having dropped two straight OOC.

We finish the season with an overall record of 14-14.

Silva will return for the postseason tourney.

MWC Conference Tournament Quarter Finals

We are matched up with the 7 seed Air Force. We are obviously the #2 seed for this game.

We fall behind early by a score of 20-9, but we go on a big run and take a 21-20 lead with 9 and a half left in the first half. The game goes back and forth for the rest of the half, but we end up trailing 44-42 at the half, in a very high scoring game so far.

We fall behind by as many as 9 in the second half, but cut the lead to 2 points with 8 minutes remaining.

At the 7 minute mark we cut the lead to 1 with a pair of free throws, but they nail an NBA range 3 pointer to go back up by 4.

We try to answer but miss the three, they take over and connect on another 3 ball to put them up 74-67 with just 6:07 on the clock.

We nail a pair of free throws to cut the lead back down to 5, just under 6 to play.

We drain a three at the 5 minute mark to cut the lead back down to 4.

With just over 3 to go, we are still down four, when we force a turnover, and Greene gets fouled on a 3 point shot. He goes to the line for 3 free throws! He gets 2 out of three and we pull to within 2 points, 3:29 left in the game.

They drain a 15 footer to go back up by 4.

Qualls misses 2 free throws with 2:15 on the clock, so we are still down by 4. That really killed us there.

Our defense holds and we get the ball back. Greene gets fouled and will shoot a pair. He misses both and we are in big trouble now.

But wait! Greene grabs his own miss and puts it up.

But it is blocked.

Silva right there to grab it and lay it in for the score! 78-76, we trail by 2 with 1:31 on the clock!

Air Force shoots a quick three and they drain it to go back up by 5 with only 1:14 to play. That might have been the dagger in the heart for us.

Silva answers with a tough fade away from 10 feet for the score. 81-78 with 54 seconds left.

We decide to play defense instead of fouling and it probably cost us our season. They score with just 17 seconds left to go up by 5.

Silva hit’s a turnaround, but time expires and we lose 83-30.

Quarterfinal Results:

(8) Wyoming beats (1) Utah
(7) Air Force beats (2) SDSU
(6) Colorado State beats (3) UNLV
(5) BYU beats (4) New Mexico

How about that. All 4 top seeds lose in the first round.

Semis:

(8) Wyoming beats (5) BYU
(7) Air Force beats (6) Colorado State

So, the two worst teams in the MWC will play for a trip to the Big Dance.

Finals:

(8) Wyoming over (7) Air Force

That is only fitting.

And our fate? Well, considering we finished 14-15 it is no surprise we will be home for both tournaments this year. Oh well.

BYU gets an ACT invite and beats Pacific in the first round.

Wyoming ends up as a 13 seed in the tournament. They lose to the 4 seed, Gonzaga in the first round.

Utah gets an at large big and is a 10 seed. They They are able to upset the #25 team in the nation, Florida to move on to the second round.

They will face the 2 seed, and #9 Duke. Duke crushes them, 71-55.

BYU is the last team from the MWC playing, and they face off against Appalachian St. in the second round of the ACT. They cruise, 87-48 to move to round three of the ACT.

They face USC from the PAC-10 and move on to the ACT Final Four with a 78-73 victory.

In the ACT Final Four, BYU faces off against Mercer. Mercer ends their run with a 72-60 win over BYU.

Seton Hall beats Mercer to take the ACT Title.

In the NCT, the final four teams are: Fresno State, Texas A&M, California and Notre Dame.

So, the two worst teams in the MWC will play for a trip to the Big Dance.

Which is exactly why we should never allow automatic bids for conference tournament winners.

Which is why tournaments have big ratings and big attendance, worth big bucks to the team involved. Trust me a money maker like the ACC tourney is huge for ALL the teams...

Plus there's a romance factor.
