IWS #30 Results

Notes

I had hoped to have a higher level of participation, somewhere between 30-40. We didn't quite get there... actually I only got 19 entries. Next time... if I win again, I'll make the questions a bit more general.

Answers

I think the reason we had low participation levels was because of the questions asked. I don't think they were general enough, as most of the people who entered had to actually look up the answers. I'll atribute this to a 'newbie mistake.'

1. Name a novel written by John Grisham.
11 - The Firm
4 - The Client
1 - The Summons
1 - A Painted House
1 - The Testament
1 - The Pelican Brief

2. Name a member of the “Dave Matthews Band” other than Dave Matthews.
10 - Carter Beaford
5 - Stefan Lessard
2 - Boyd Tinsley
1 - Dave Matthews
1 - Dave Matthews's Guitar

3. Name a natural resource.
14 - Oil
4 - Water
1 - Natural Gas

4. Name a member of George W. Bush’s senior staff.
5 - Colin Powell
3 - Ari Fleischer
3 - Dick Chaney
2 - Donald Rumsfeld
2 - Karl Rove
2 - Condoleeza Rice
1 - Barbara Bush
1 - Michael Gerson

5. Name a character, NOT actor, in the movie “The Usual Suspects.”
14 - Keyser Soze
2 - Verbal Kint
1 - Man Walking on Street
1 - ????

6. Name an “American Hockey League” franchise. (include city & nickname)
3 - Hartford Wolfpack
3 - Hamilton Bulldogs
2 - Albany River Rats
2 - Philly Phantoms
2 - Providence Bruins
1 - Grand Rapids Griffins
1 - Rochester Americans
1 - Portland Pirates
1 - Hershey Bears
1 - Manchester Monarchs
1 - Chicago Wolves
1 - Cincinnati Mighty Ducks

And the Winner is...

#1 - albionmoonlight - 215,600 - 66.7%
#1 - Masked - 215,600 - 66.7%
#3 - QuickSand - 107,800 - 33.3%
#4 - Draft Dodger - 64,680 - 20.0%
#4 - Sublime - 64,680 - 20.0%

So we have tie . As the rules states:

Quote:
In the event of a tie, one winner will moderate, and all winners will have the option to contribute questions.

Thanks for particpating for those that did!

Questions can be found here.

Also, if you need the spreadsheet to tabulate results just drop me a PM, and I'll e-mail it to you.

Did anyone have any particular rationale for the AHL answer (the one that stumped me)? I went to their web site, and saw that Portland was hosting their all-star game, and picked them. I had thought about going alphabetically, and it looks like that would have given me a perfect score. Drat.

Well, I dominated that round. Wait, highest score wins? Well then, I suck.

I picked Hamilton because they had the best overall record. I figured people would either A) be familiar with the AHL and pick the best team (like if you said NHL, a lot of people might pick Dallas or Detriot) or B) know nothing about the AHL and look for the best team. I had ended up matching the highest total, but it definitely wasn't a runaway.

The one that screwed me was the Dave Matthews question. I had no idea on this one and saw Boyd Tinsley's name on the website more than any other.

The oil, Keyser Sose, and Firm questions just seemed like dead giveaways. (though I was tempted to guess "man walking on street" ).

I've never played before and didn't know we could look up the answers. I picked Hartford for the AHL question since I'm from CT.

I chose the team with the best overall record (Hamilton)

And I am the one who answered Barbara Bush and Dave Matthews as I didn't want to google any answer => bottom ranked as usual

I picked Philly bc I'm a (displaced) Flyers fan. Wasn't sure if they are even AHL or not though. My other choice would have been Hershey, as they were the Flyers' affiliate for years.

BTW, I answered Dave Matthew's Guitar (probably doesn't even play guitar. I don't follow the band) and "Man walking on street". I figure there's probably one of those in every movie :-) I basically refused to look up any answers. I'm pretty disappointed I didn't finish last! Darn you, gold!

I went with the team on the top left of the web site logos. That was Albany. "Man walking on street." That kills me. Turns out there was one of those in the movie, too.

Finally, I am with stupid. It has taken long enough.

Masked--let me know what you want--I can do the whole thing, take three questions from you and moderate, or give you three questions and let you moderate. It's your call.

I matched you in answer and reasoning in selecting Albany, albionmoonlight.

Seriously? Cool. I had been hoping to find something generic enough.

I looked the website, but ended up going with the one team I had heard of (Providence) because I couldn't think of any compelling reason to go with anything else. Perhaps fittingly, considering I seemed to put far les thought into this answer than some people, I ended up winning IWS.
