ˇBienvenidos a Tropico!

The Beginning:

The year was 1949. Revolution was ripe in the heat of the Carribbean Sea and the beautiful island of Tropico was no different. In March of that year, rebels rose up from the forests of the island and marched on the capital, Ciego De Avila. Our dictator, Marco de la Sus de Jones fled immediately. We were left leaderless. The rebels, along with their backers, the United States, decided to install a democratic government.

I, Juan Pantalones was asked to run for the presidency. Being a self-made man was something the Tropican people respected so I went for it. I was elected president in December 1949 and took office in January 1950.

Here's a little info on my backround:

The island is rather large, and contains 3 cities. Here is an overview(sorry for the blurryness).

The capital is Ciego De Avila. Right now it is just a shantytown, but I hope to change that.

The next town is Cardenas. It is a farming community and will provide food for the people of Tropico.

The final town is the port known as Redention.

The last thing of note on the island is a Spanish colonial fort.

You may remember that I tried a Tropico dynasty a while back. I got into the 80s before the game file became corrupted. I plan to go much slower this time to not burn myself out.

Also, I will be accepting 5 applications for people to input their names into the game.

Good luck. I always thought Tropico was a fun game. This thread makes me wish I still had it.

Most would say that my regime began on a slow note, but I would argue against that. While not much happened this year, it's all part of the bigger picture. I plan on setting up a good infrastructure and economy before broadening my horizons with tourism, industry, and electricity.

My first move was to create a cash crop for Tropico. After surveying local growing conditions, I decided that tobacco would be the most profitable. I had 2 of my farms convert their main crop from corn to tobacco.

Also early on in the year, I began phase II of the building of my independent economy. I knew that I would have no money from tobacco until next year sometime and I didn't want to go broke, so I commissioned the building of a Tenement building. And for good measure, I felt the compassion to give my people a pub.

In May, phase III of my project began. That's when 7 immigrants arrived on Tropico's beautiful shores. I plan on making Tropico a melting pot of peoples from all over the world, although eventually, I will place limits on who is allowed into my country.

August brought an overhaul of the wage system on Tropico. I have decided to pay based on education. All uneducated workers, regardless of job will receive $6/month. Workers with a high school education, such as my 2 soldiers, will receive $12/month. Finally, workers with a college degree will make $18/month.

This also helps set up a rent system. My citizens have told me time and time again that they will not pay more than 1/3 of their monthly salary for rent. So, tenements and apartment buildings will rent for $2/month, to make sure everyone, including singles, will have housing. Regular houses will rent for a whopping $4/month. This means married uneducated workers and single high school educated workers will have nice houses to live in. And once electricity is brought to Tropico, luxury houses will rent for $6/month. Married workers with a high school education and all workers with a college education can live in these houses.

Big plans for a small island. Yes, other things will have to be worked out in time, but that is my preliminary plan. On the other hand, here is the 1950 Poor Ricardo's Almanac, straight from Tropico.

1951:

1951 was a rather boring year for the island of Tropico. Most of the year was spent waiting for my 2 construction projects to be completed. The treasury was rather low because my farms haven't harvested yet. In December, the treasury dipped into the red. Thank you foreign aid!

In May, the Tenement was completed. The rents that I gather from here will hopefully hold me over until I can start exporting tobacco.

Also in May, a freighter pulled up to the docks in Redention. Unfortunately, there was only one person on board hoping to start a new life on Tropico.

Not much went on for the rest of the summer and autumn months. The next story of note was the increase of fish prices throughout the Carribbean. All prices of exported fish and fish products went up 10%. I have a picture of the letter I received, but it was too blurry.

In December, the pub was completed. I set the entrance fee to $4. Tropicans will not pay more than a month's salary to enter the pub, or anything for that matter.

There were also 2 births of note this year on the island. They were AJ Tucker and Colton Mayes.

I just started playing Tropico and was wondering how do you set it up so that workers recieve money based on their education rather than their job?

You can't set it up all at once, so you have to do it manually with each job.

Each job requires a certain education level. If you need a high school or college education, it'll have an icon next to it. Farmers don't need an education, so there is no icon, and on my island it pays $6/month. Jobs such as soldiers require a high school education so there is a blue cap next to it when the palace is highlighted. On my island, that's $12/month. Doctors require a college education, so there is a green cap next to it. On my island, that'll make you $18/month.

K, I see that it is the original Tropico. Do you have 2, and what are your thoughts on which game is better?

I haven't bought 2 yet, so I don't know which one is better. Someone else on here has 2 and was doing a Pirate dynasty, but I don't remember who it was.

I had been doing that, just thought there might be a way to do it so that when a High Schooler decides to farm instead of work in my foreign ministry (s)he could still get paid at a different wage.

1952:

1952 began with some promise. My farms were close to harvesting and thanks to foreign aid from the United States and the Soviet Union, Tropico had money in the bank. I used that money to increase the food quality on my island.

First, I issued a Food for the People edict. This doubles the amount of daily meals for the people of my island.

The second thing I did to increase food supply was commission the construction of a Marketplace. This makes food easier to obtain for the people. Instead of walking to the farms to get it, they can just go to the market.

In May, the Marketplace was completed. It would not have a grocer until later in the year, which you will see later.

The summer months brought a great sight to my eyes. What was it?, you ask. It was the train of Teamsters traveling from Ciego De Avila to Redention with wheelbarrows of tobacco and corn.

That lead to August when 2 immigrants arrived on a Freighter. Leo Ybara, a 35 year old construction worker from Santiago and Hester Upton, a 37 year old barmaid from London will now call Tropico home.

And here's the reason my treasury had it's 2nd bad year in a row.

The crops made it to the docks, but unfortunately, all of my dockworkers decided to call it a day before loading it onto the ship. The ship still remains at the dock, waiting to be loaded.

The final main shot of the island this year is the newest look of Ciego De Avila.

Code:
Daniel Ertmann: Birthplace: Cardenas Job: Baby Age: 0 Household Size: 4 Household Meals: 14 Factions Belonged To: Militarists+ Family: Mother: Isabel Tapia(Construction Worker->Grocer) - Age: 37 Father: Mateo Tapia(Farmer) - Age: 37 Brother: Jorge Tapia(Baby) - Age: 1 Education: None Intelligence: Average Courage: Average Leadership: Very Good Thoughts: Mommy...mommy...MOMMY! zzzzz... Gurgle...

The Tapia family shack.

Code:
Other Thoughts: Colton Mayes: Gurgle... Waaahhhh! zzzzz... AJ Tucker: zzzzz... Gurgle... Mommy...mommy...MOMMY!

And finally, 1952's Poor Ricardo's Almanac. Notice the improvement in food quality and number of citizens.

1953:

This year will be remembered in the Tropican history books as the first year the government of Juan Pantalones turned a profit. My dockworkers finally got to work this year.

In March, the population broke 100. Tropico is a fast growing country. Unfortunately, some people don't want to be here. 6 citizens emigrated, which is why the end of year total is less than 100.

The sight of Redention at the beginning of the year was unchanged from 1952.

But in July, something changed.

Yes, that's right, my dockworkers finally made it in and got to work. The profits from my farms finally started rolling in.

That's actually about all for this update. Not much changed this year.

Nope, taking it back tomorrow. If there is another copy in I'll try it, if that one messes up too, then I'm all out of ideas. But I am pretty sure that was the only one in the 3-4 stores I checked.
