Richmond Grays 2023 and onward
Preseason:
We resigned lead scout Behrendt for another 5 yr deal. He's been very good for us. No one retired this season and we were really pushing the cap limit so far that in the end we had to cut a few good backups to get to 53. All in all a very trying but not busy offseason. My biggest move was to reextend QB Nelson. I was offered a deal for him, but he is coming off his best year and wa a super bowl qb. I want another shot at the ring before I bring in Pierce. No FA signings. Draft R1 CB Jimmy Borkowski R2 RB Vernon Stephens R3 P Ricky Wellins R4 WR Peter Tracy R5 CB Teddy Bronson R6 DT Desmond McCormick R7 LB Lonnie Allen I got a CB to replace the effective but unaffordable Darren Walsh. He was my 3rd round draft choice 5 yrs ago but I can't spend 10+mil per year for him. I got a RB who has talent but I really didn't need but he was best player available and I need 2 more Rb's anyway. I got a P who replaces Joyner who busted last year as a rookie 3rd rounder. Cost me some in bonus money but I am happy here. Tracy looks good as a 3rd receiver and Bronson can contribute right away. I go into the season with this roster:
Preseason: We go 3-1 with no major injuries. Time to make our run!! Regular Season: Wk 1: Ari (0-0) @ Richmond (0-0) W35-17 Recap: Randal Nelson wins POG in leading Richmond over the Cardinals. It was a game of thorough domination by the home team as we outgained the Cars 2-1 in total yardage. We suffered a hit in our paper thin CB roster with Cooley dislocating his shoulder and Lang pulling his groin. Both are expected to be full strenght in 3-5 weeks. Stats: Nelson 20-30 298 4td Spencer 6-78 2td Harrelson 3-117 1td Week 2: Richmond (1-0)@ New Orleans(1-1)L14-6 Recap: For starters, lets look at how important having an excellent AI rating which my coach has:
This is how all my seasons have gone actually. It's getting very tiresome and I'm beginning to think the game should be called Front Office Injury Manager 2001. Anyway, one long bomb in the second quarter was enough to beat the walking wounded but they added one in the 4th quarter too. Stats: Nelson 22-44 228 Winslett 2 sacks Friesz 8/2 0.0 Week 3: Richmond (1-1)@ Dallas (0-2) L23-20 Recap: We don't have what it takes to beat the Cowboys. We went up 10-0 but they scored the next 20 to go 20-10 to end the 3rd quarter. We traded field goals to make it 23-13 and with less than a minute left Nelson hits Hampton for a td so the score really wasn't as close as it seemed. Stats: Nelson 17-30 275 2/4 Spencer 7-136 0td Hampton 5-23 rushing 3-64 2td rec Friesz 13/2 1int Ross 12/5 Week 4: Bye Time to heal up a bit. Week 5: Richmond (1-2)@Washington (2-1)W28-20 Recap: Lets see, Lang finally goes down for 2-3 months. He really should have stopped pulling his groin. Pointer hasn't budged and we really need him back if we make the playoffs. The rest of us are healing well. Oh yeah, the game. I really wish I had saved the game log. I was down 14-20 when with 51 seconds Nelson hits Burnett for a td. With 17 seconds left Hampton runs 19 yds for a td. Hampton is really becoming a key player on this team. Hampton also wins POG which makes sense. Stats: Moses 17-57 2 td Hampton 8-46 1td Week 6: NYG (3-2) @ Richmond (2-2)L13-3 Recap: We don't look very competetive this season. Nelson may well be shot, I don't know. Maybe NY is that good. BTW we lose Hampton and Harrelson our best player on O and our best receiver for 2-3 months. Thank god we have a coach with an exc at AI, else we'd probably only have one or two active guys by now. Stats: Friesz 8/6 1 sack Week 7: Richmond (2-3)@ Arizona (2-4)L34-27 Recap: And the free fall continues. On the bright side we only lose Cb Cooley and CB Borowski for 3-5 weeks. That makes our top 3 CB's and our top LB out on D and out top WR, FB out on O. Stats: Nothing worth mentioning. Our 3 tds came of a punt return, int return and kickoff return. Week 8: Philadelphia(51)@ Richmond(2-4)L27-13 Recap: This was the end of the Nelson era this year. Pierce is the starter now. Week 9:Richmond (2-5)@ Manchester (2-5)L24-21 Week 10:Washington(4-4)@ Richmond (2-6)L27-24 Week11 allas (2-7)@ Richmond(2-7)W23-17 Still have 5 starters with 2-3months injured Week12:NewEngalnd (3-6)@ Richmond (3-7)W20-10 All 4 CB are down 2 long term 2 3-5 wks. This is beyond bad luck it is frustratingly ridiculous. Had to cut players just to by scrub CB's. Week13:St Louis (6-5)@Richmond (4-7)W21-3 Week14:Richmond (5-7)@Philadelphia (5-7)L41-3 Week15:Richmond (5-8)@NYG (7-6) W13-9 Week16:Richmond(6-8)@GreenBay(8-6) T24-24 Oh nice, a tie. Week17:Buffalo(9-6)@Richmond(7-7-1)W34-21 Still couldn't keep the out of the playoffs though. Final record 7-8-1 What a sad season. If things don't get better next year, excellent AI or not, this team will be broken down and reassembled with many heads rolling, starting with his. Award LB Friesz 1st Team LB Herb: 37/56/23/70 42 [This message has been edited by Axxon (edited 01-26-2001).]
