Baseball Auction Round 2 Results
The Deadline is 11:59 PM EST Saturday Night.
Results - http://www.geocities.com/bishopmvp5/auction.xls Last thread - http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/for...6&page=1&pp=50 Rules same as before. I'm moving back out to UMass tomorrow, so I don't want to set a deadline until I'm sure I have everything working out there, but the sooner everyone gets them in the better. Picked up the following players:
Those bids may seem high, but there was a big drop-off after Kent at 2B, and RP after Percival/Face/Marshall, so I figured I had to step up and fill in. Also picked up 4 great Negro Leaguers in the best SS, Willie Wells, 2 great pitchers for 5th starter and long relief in Leon Day and Hilton Smith and either my starting 3B or uber-backup in Martin Dihigo, who is listed as having played all 9 positions in his career. |

I can't tell you how much I hate Suicane75 right now.
But I got a pretty good spread of players - 1B Rafael Palmeiro, 21 3B Bill Joyce, 12 (.435 career OBP, 47 SB/162 Games) OF Kevin Mitchell, 2 OF Curt Flood, 2 OF Willie Wilson, 1 (668 Career SBs, Switch Hitter) SP Kid Nichols, 131 SP Brett Saberhagen, 2 SP Vida Blue, 51 SP David Cone, 2 SP Rick Reuschel, 11 MR Rod Beck, 11 MR Dave Righetti, 11 Brings me to 20 total players. I've gotten just about everyone...but my OF isn't exactly star-studded, with Kevin Mitchell, Willie Wilson and Curt Flood. My full squad thus far:
Can't say I'm disappointed in them...but I could use a power hitter or three.

How the hell did we all miss Griffey the first time around?
Well, I was still happy to get a two-time MVP and future 500+ HR guy for $1. |

Ok, pass me some of what you guys are smoking. How does Griffey get 120-something or Ichiro get 70-something while HOF Billy Williams goes for 40 or Dale Murphy for like 20. Methinks there's a very young skew here.

I think the format of an auction draft leads to the skew more than what people think of said players abilities.

Ouch... I only got:
Sparky Anderson - Manager Ken Boyer - 3B Instead of bidding the farm on one person, I spread out my points among Lefty Grove, Reggie Jackson, Yogi Berra, and Juan Marichal and missed out on all of them .

Here's what we're looking at.
Welp, point number 1 is we need a friggen shortstop, after losing out on both of our choices. (Grrr.) Other than that though, I like our position players. Definatly a throwback team here, with a cast of epic sluggers down the middle. Speed at the top in Carey, and who better to keep team cohesion than the man himself, Yogi Berra? I've got some options in the bench. Pitching...eh. It's certainly not bad. Not the greatest rotation you're gonna see, but we've got a collection of talented veterans, and 1 young god in my man Prior. Relief pitching, as I said, was damned hard to sort through. We've got a top notch closer, and a collection of guys who have for the most part got the job done. Fair enough. Starting Lineup --------------- 1) CF - Carey, Max (15) 2) RF - DiMaggio, Joe (110) 3) 3B - Robinson, Brooks (67) 4) 1B - Foxx, Jimmie (105) 5) LF - Maris, Roger (65) 6) C - Berra, Yogi (110) 7) 2B - Sandberg, Ryne (25) 8) SS - Bench ----- C - Kendall, Jason (16) 1B - Grace, Mark (11) 2B - 3B - Santo, Ron (21) SS - OF - Winfield, Dave (12) OF - Lofton, Kenny (1) Starting Rotation ----------------- 1) Dean, Dizzy (96) 2) Niekro, Phil (18) 3) Gomez, Lefty (72) 4) 5) Prior, Mark (36) Bullpen ------- LR - Lieber, Jon (1) MR - Jones, Doug (14) SU - Foulke, Keith (5) SU - Isringhausen, Jason (14) CL - Nen, Robb (27) Manager ------- Weaver, Earl (5) |

Eh, I have too many holes to fill, Fielder and Coleman were supposed to be 1 purpose bench guys so unless I can magicaly pull a couple of HOFers out of thin air im in trouble. That being said, if we do allow trades before voteing starts, you can have Griffey.....for a price. |

From this round...
Add this to my old team...here goes C Bill Freehan C Darren Daulton (he's my favorite player ever) 1B 2B Bill Mazerowski 3B SS Honus Wagner IF Hughie Jennings IF Bobby Grich OF Joe Jackson OF Hank Aaron OF Ed Delahanty OF Sam Crawford SP: Orval Overall SP: Eddie Plank SP: Joe Wood SP: Kid Nichols SP: John Clarkson SP: Burleigh Grimes SP: Amos Rusie RP: Tom Henke I think my pitching staff matches up with anyone...my reliever is a bit weak, but I may not need him. My outfield is *very* solid, with four HoFers (well, Joe Jackson would be)...and my infield has pretty good defense, so far. Honus Wagner is arguably the finest player ever. I do need some good 1B/3B though...so, let's hear it for Von Hayes and Howard Johnson! |

I got forked in my picks, but I did pick up three key guys - my staff ace (Lefty Grove), my closer (Kent Tekulve), and the best SS no one has heard of (George Davis).
I'm still willing to put my starting lineup against anyone: c Ted Simmons 1b/3b Darrell Evans 2b Joe Morgan ss George Davis 3b Mike Schmidt of Bobby Bonds of Eric Davis of Kirk Gibson cf Richie Ashburn rf Frank Robinson 2b Lou Whitaker The pitching staff is still in flux, but I'm sure I can pick up some suitable arms. I have lots of points: sp Lefty Grove sp Gaylord Perry sp Bert Blylven rp Kent Tekulve |

I got some key guys in the first round, but by and large I missed out on a lot of players. I only had four guys overall after the first round. While the pickings were slimmer this time around, I think I took quite a step forward, landing Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, Reggie Jackson, and Harmon Killebrew. Three of the top power hitters of all time (with Sosa's pedigree growing), and the premier power pitcher of the past two decades. I'm still stunned he (or any of these guys) were available in the second round.
Here's who I got in the second round: SP Roger Clemens OF Harry Heilmann OF Reggie Jackson SP Tommy John 1B Harmon Killebrew SP Jack Morris C Thurman Munson 3B Graig Nettles OF Lefty O'Doul RF Sammy Sosa That is added to: C Roy Campanella 2B Eddie Collins SS Ernie Banks SP Bob Feller So my lineup looks like this at the moment: Manager: I went for McGraw in the first round and missed out on him. I decided just to save my points here until later. I'm glad I did. I think I can still pick up a pretty good manager in the late going, at least not too far off the top guys anyway. SP: Bob Feller SP: Roger Clemens SP: Tommy John SP: Jack Morris SP: I thought after the first round, I was a goner with the rotation, but I think I recovered quite well. Feller and Clemens form one of the most powerful one-two duos around, and John and Morris are the kind of consistent long term guys that can really fill out a rotation. I need much more depth here. RP: RP: RP: My pen needs a lot of work, but it isn't for lack of trying. I have failed to get Eck, Fingers, Smoltz, Reardon, Franco, and even my guy Percy (who went for an astounding 112 points, sheesh). I'll get these spots filled. It's just going to take a little more digging. 2B Eddie Collins CF Lefty O'Doul C Roy Campanella RF Sammy Sosa 1B Harmon Killebrew SS Ernie Banks LF Reggie Jackson (he can make the transition) 3B Graig Nettles I really like how I filled out my lineup, although, just like everyone else, I am sure, it's the guys I miss out on that get me up in a bunch. For instance, in the first round, I narrowed my first base choice down to Foxx and Gehrig. I wanted Gehrig, but I went for Foxx, because I figured everyone would go for the Iron Man. I threw 100 on Foxx, and just a couple on Gehrig. Well, as it turns out, I overestimated this bunch, and Gehrig got a top offer of 40 from TroyF. That's just absolutely shocking. I was outbid for Foxx, of course. I think Killebrew is an awfully nice replacement, though. That Campanella to Jackson line is a Murderer's Row in a big way, with some 2200-2500 homeruns among them. Collins, one of the top hitters and basestealers of the early age, and Lefty O'Doul, the #4 alltime average hitter should do fine to set up the big bats. Bench C Thurman Munson OF Harry Heilmann My bench is weak right, but that's what you expect when you only get four guys in the first round. I'm looking forward to finding other darkhorse candidates to fill it. Total points left: 122 (for 11 players and a manager) Chief Rum

Congrats on Killebrew...I really wanted him in the second round. Tommy John and Jack Morris are also great pickups. I didn't want to get into a war for Clemens, because I think that Nichols and Grove were better...but he's also a great pick. I like your team so far, Chief.

And Comey, I think I have Kid Nichols.

TroyF was on yesterday but never submitted any bid or gave me any indication he was working on it. If he wants to submit a bid for Round 3, that would be great. If not, he's out. atz840 had to move all his things back out to college over the last couple days, but he should be back for Round 3.

Bishop:
I have two questions about the auction: 1) Now that Chubby is out, can we re-bid on his players in this round? Or are they permanently out of commission? 2) I notice that one person has Joe Torre, the manager; and another has Joe Torre, the player. Are we allowed to split people like that? |

1) They're permanently out. If I had thought about it before the auction, I might have put them up for re-bid, but I'm against changing the rules in the middle of the auction.
2) Yes, it is allowed. If you're going to do it though, just make a note of whether you want him as a player or manager. Otherwise, I'll assume whichever I remember him as. I would have put down Already Bid for Torre if it hadn't been pointed out he was wanted as a 3B. |

Well I got some nice additions to my team.
1B Jake Beckley 17 2B nellie Fox 21 SS Phil rizzuto 41 3B George Kell 14 LF Goose Goslin 11 CF Lloyd Waner 63 RF Wee Willie Keeler 39 P Tim Keefe 9 P Mickey Welch 5 This in addition to 2b Rod Carew 63 SS Rabbit Maranville 3 LF Ducky Medwick 6 RF Babe Ruth 274 P Catfish Hunter 1 manager Walter Alston 6 need 11 more players and have 427 to spend My pitching staff needs bodies. But grabbing a couple of 300 game winners makes me happy. I wanted Grove and Berrra too. But I did get my starting CF in Waner my starting 3b in Kell and starting 1B in Beckley My starting Lineup looks like C nobody 1b Beckley 2b Carew 3B Kell ss Rizzuto LF Medwick Cf Waner Rf Ruth Not too bad the middle of the infield has 4 solid guys with Fox and Maranville sitting there too. |

I thought it was one team per guy. I think a lot of people would have bid on torre and other guys if they knew about this rule ahead of time. It might have changed a lot of people's teams.

From the official rules in the first thread - "No player-managers. Bids for managers and players are considered seperate, so you could have 1 person simultaneously playing for 1 team and managing another. If your manager has played in the majors, please note you want him as a manager."
I don't recall when exactly I edited that in, but it was well before Round 2 began, so Torre as a Third Baseman was still available. |

I don't know what the new divisions are now. I'm going to wait and see if TroyF/atz840 continue or not and if anyone else drops out. For the divisions that lose teams, I'll keep the rest intact and only balance out if one division drops down to 3 teams left.

Yeah, sorry about that. Been busy moving into college last couple days. The official deadline will be Friday night @ 11:59 PM EST. I probably won't get around to posting it until early Saturday morning or that afternoon, but I'm not going to guarantee you get in if you don't turn them in by Friday night. Right now, I (think I) have bids from:
ISiddiqui Honolulu Blue Maple Leafs ntndeacon oykib Coffee Warlord. If any of these were questions or comments and not bids, I'll get around to reading them once I finish my list (sometime tomorrow.) |
