I cannot express how many light years better this was than Bravo's Celebrity Poker series. These people could actually play. Not terribly well, but passable. Nice twist with the red cards too. I liked that they could actually call for "pro help" when in doubt once a game. I couldn't believe Aisha Tyler's use of it though. She's got the freakin nut straight and Jack Black goes all-in in front of her. Timeout! I need Daniel and Jennifer to tell me what to do. I thought Daniel's eyes were going to fall out of his head when he double-checked the board to see if she really did have the nut straight. Funny stuff. I was entertained.

"The Nuts" in poker=The best possible hand possible. Can't be beat.

So the Nut Straight is the best possible straight on the board, given the cards on the table and your hole cards.

has anyone else seen any of the "Showdown at the sands?"

It's been airing alternately on the MSG (Madison Square Garden) network and Fox Sports New York (which I don't get).

The announcer is terrible (way over the top), but Howard Lederer is an analyst, so you get good breakdowns out of him.

I've seen two episodes, and Phil Helmuth makes it pretty far (but not to the final table I believe) and T.J. Cloutier seems to do pretty well. There's also some interesting stuff where players are connected to heart rate monitors... so you see their heart rates jump when bluffing/flopping a huge hand, etc.

edit: I think this originally aired in November of last year. And it may just be showing regionally, given which channels I'm receiving it on. The event was at the Sands in Atlantic City.

I like poker but this is getting ridiculous with all these programs...even NBC is joining the fray. I smell approaching shark jumping...

Yeah this was originally aired on Thanksgiving day in a marathon session. It wasn't too bad. The announcer is Jessie May who also hosts Late Night Poker, which is a UK show I believe. Fox Sports has started showing episodes of this, too. In LNP, Jessie May is quite a bit more subdued, and thus, tolerable. Totally agree about him in Showdown at the Sands, though. Horrific. Also, for some reason they have mic hooked up that really lets you hear people fiddling with their chips (everyone, constantly). It is actually more annoying than Jessie May. Howard Lederer was excellent in support, however. More than made up for Jessie and the chip noise. Plus there were some pretty interesting hands. I enjoyed both the hand that Daniel Negreanu and Mike Mattusow played (both had 93o) and their reaction when they both would up allin and turned over their cards. Pretty funny. Hellmuth is pure entertainment. I understand why people hate him, but I like him. He makes any table he's at interesting, he's a really good player, and he does a lot for poker. he doesn't really annoy me, either, so I find that I like watching him.

I was mostly impressed with the play of TJ Cloutier in the Sands tournament. I really thought he played the best poker of anyone there. I did not get to see how he got knocked out, so I don't know if he got caught in a move or got unlucky. I was also disappointed with the way Negreanu and Vahedi got knocked out. I thought they were both playing well, though Vahedi was short stacked and was bound to get hit with that luck eventually. If you get a chance to watch the whole thing, I recommend it. It's a nice tournament, and a decent first effort for FOX, aside from Jessie May

The WSoP on ESPN is still hands-down the best programming. Norman Chad was born to do color for this...and I love all of the different personalities. I'll never get tired of watching Moneymaker bounce so many huge names out of the tourney...

That all-in by Moneymaker when he was head-up with Sam Farha was the ballsiest move I have seen on tv so far...

If you have TiVo, you can create a POKER wishlist and once every two weeks go through all the programs and just record what you want to see for the next two weeks...don't underestimate the ability to watch this stuff sans commercials (or Kevin Pollack).

I agree that Norman Chad really shined during WSOP. I used to find him damn annoying in general, but his comments and delivery were damn perfect. So many memorably quotes (referring to Vahedi - "This is like a poker DUI" or "He's not just drawing dead, he's drawing six feet under.")

I don't just hate Helmuth, I love to hate Helmuth. The guy is such a whiny prick that it's fun to see him lose a hand, then not let it go for 5 more hands. He definitely spices up any table, and I love to see him play just so I can laugh at his childish behavior. A completely amusing character. I'm a big fan of Howard Lederer in general, so it's good to hear/see him analyze the expect and not-so expert players in the tourney.

And Jessie May is borderline unbearable. He reacts to everything as if it were the most shocking development in the history of poker. It gets tired real fast.
