Jets Extend Brien's Contract

The New York Jets announced today that they have extended kicker, Doug Brien's contract. The term of the deal is 2 years for $2,290,000. Brien replaced free agent kicker John Hall, who departed to Washington when the Redskins raided the Jets last off season. Brien has developed into a consistent kicker converting 18 of 22 field goals, and all 22 point after attempts.

Week 14

Week 14
New York Jets (9-3) at Buffalo Bills (7-5)
Line: Jets –4

The New York Jets traveled to Buffalo looking to avenge last weeks loss, and extend their lead on Buffalo to 3 games. Buffalo, winners of 3 straight can keep their playoff hopes alive going with a win over the division rival Jets.

The Jets came in without their leading rusher, Curtis Martin who was injured last week against Tennessee. Lamont Jordan got the start, and made the most out of it. Jordan rushed for 136 yards, on 30 carries and led the Jets to a 20-10 victory. The Jets dominated in all aspects of the football game, outgaining the Bills 393 to 219, time of possession as the Jets held the ball for neatly 36 minutes and zero turnovers to the Bills one.

Although the Jets defense was credited with only 2 sacks, they were in Bledsoe’s face all game, as they hurried him 12 times, and blocked 2 passes. John Abraham had one of the most dominating defensive performances in recent Jets history. Abraham was credited with 1 sack, 1 batted ball and seven hurries. Abraham is making it known that he is one of the top defensive ends in the league.

Lamont Jordan started the scoring with a 2 yard touchdown, the Jets would come back down the field on their next possession and this time Pennington would hit Curtis Conway from 13 yards out. For Pennington it was only his 12th touchdown pass of the season. Doug Brien would add two field goals from 28 yards and 38 yards out as the Jets scored 20 unanswered points. Buffalo would score on a Bledsoe to Mark Campbell touchdown as the third quarter came to a close at 20-7. Buffalo would continue to mount threats in the 4th quarter, but the only scoring they would do was a 50 yard field goal by Ryan Lindell.

For the Jets, the 20-10 victory moved them to 10-3 and sank the Bills to 7-6. The Jets are home for Pittsburgh next week while Buffalo has to travel to Tennessee.

Grades
Offense: A-

They compiled 166 yards on the ground, without Curtis Martin, and 227 yards through the air for 393 yards in total offense. The O-Line played solid, making holes for the running game and protecting Pennington who was sacked only 1 time. Pennington had a good game, completing 23 of 31 passes, for 227 yards and 1 touchdown. The Jets hope to have Martin back next week for the Steelers.

Defense: A-The defense held Buffalo to 219 yards in total offense. Bledsoe was under pressure all game, primarily from John Abraham who was dominating. Buffalo was only able to muster 1.8 yards per carry on 18 carries. The Bills running game sorely misses Travis Henry.

Special Teams: A-
Special Teams played mistake free football. Brien was perfect on his two field goals, and Stryzinski punted four times, none were returnable. Moss was not given the opportunity to field and punts as Buffalo kicked the ball away from his on each occasion.

Week 15
Pittsburgh Steelers (4-8-1) at New York Jets (10-3)
Line: Jets –10
Pittsburgh has been disappointing this season and come in losing 3 of their last 4. The Jets are winners of 2 of their last 4 including last weeks 20-10 victory over Buffalo. The Jets get their running back Curtis Martin back, and he will get the start despite Jordan’s 130 yard performance against Buffalo.

Pittsburgh got on the board late in the first quarter with a 41-yard field goal to get a 3-0 lead. The Jets answered back with 20 unanswered points beginning with a 10 yard pass from Pennington to Moss to take a 7-3 lead. Brien continued the Jets scoring with two field goals and a 13-3 halftime lead. The Jets scored early in the third quarter when quarterback Chad Pennington hit TE Chris Baker for his first touchdown and reception of the year. Pittsburgh scored late in the third quarter when Tommy Maddox hit Plaxico Burress to cut the Jets lead to 20-10. Pittsburgh would continue their assault moving the ball at will, however, the Jets defense, as they have all season made the big plays. With Pittsburgh attempting to cut the lead to 20-17 Maddox was intercepted by Sam Cowart in the end zone and ending the first threat. Pittsburgh would not quit, after holding the Jets to a three and out, Pittsburgh took the ball back and drove the ball down the field. With Pittsburgh on the Jets 10 yard line Maddox made another mistake and would pay. Tyrone Carter stepped in from of a poorly thrown ball and raced 98 yards for the touchdowns and a 27-10 lead. That would be the final.

The victory and the Patriots loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars gave the Jets the AFC East crown.

Grades
Offense: C
The offense struggled against the Steelers. The team only gained 17 points, 257 yards in total offense, and turned the ball over two times. Curtis Martin carried the ball 18 times for 69 yards and is now listed as fully healed. Curtis Conway had his finest game of the season, finishing the game with 74 yards on 7 carries. Pennington completed 17 of 27 passes for 162 yards, 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Reserve TE Chris Baker made his first reception of the season, a 1 yard touchdown.

Defense: B
The defense gave up 350 yards against the Steelers, which was not the output that was expected, however, two interceptions, stopping drives that could have put Pittsburgh back in the game gave the Jets the victory. Marvin Jones led the team with 12 tackles. Strong safety, Tyrone Carter returned a Tommy Maddox interception 98 yards for a touchdown.

Special Teams: B
Kicker Doug Brien converted both field goal attempts, and raised his point total to 81 for the season. Punter Dan Stryzinski struggled, averaging 37.1 yards on 4 punts. Return specialist, Michael Bates got into the action with a punt return for 16 yards, and a kickoff return for 36 yards. Punt coverage allowed Antwaan Randale El to return a punt for 15 yards.

Week 16

Week 16
New England (8-6) at New York Jets (11-3)
Line: Jets –6

This game had some luster a few weeks ago before New England lost to Jacksonville and the Jets escaped with a victory over Pittsbugh. Those events led to the Jets being crowned the Eastern Division Champions and the Patriots needing help to get into the playoffs.

A game of miscues began early for the Jets as Pennington was intercepted on the team’s first drive. New England could not capitalize and had to punt. The game’s first score came on the last play of the first quarter when TE Chris Baker caught a touchdown pass for the second week in a row. Brien would miss his first extra point of the season and the Jets led 6-0. This would be the first of many mistakes the Jets would make that could have cost them. On the Jets ensuing drive Pennington hit Curtis Conway for an apparent 80 yard touchdown pass, however the play would be called back on a holding call. It led to a punt. New England would get a Vinatieri field goal to cut the lead to 6-3. The Jets mistakes would continue while driving Pennington hit Conway for a big 24 yard gain, however once again this would be called back because of a holding penalty, leading to another punt, and a halftime lead of only 6-3.

New England would tie the score at 6 when Vinatieri hit from 21 yards out. The Jets would come back with Pennington’s second interception of the game. New England could not get it in the end zone and kicked another field goal, to take the lead 9-6. In the fourth quarter, trailing 9-6, the Jets got the ball on their own 5 yard line. Pennington would lead the Jets 95 yards in 14 plays, capped by a Curtis Martin 3 yard touchdown run, and a 13-9 lead. The Jets defense would mount some last minute stops, that would lead to a 13-9 victory.

For the Patriots it was a defeat that was costly. The Pats missed the opportunity to capitalize on Jacksonville’s lost and to move into the final wild card position. For the Jets the victory was a big one. Kansas City was defeated, moving the Jets to the second seed, and Kansas City, who once 8-0 fighting for the division title with Oakland.

Week 17
New York Jets (12-3) at Miami Dolphins (4-11)
Line: Jets –11

The New York Jets traveled to Miami hoping to win, and get the second seed and earn a first round bye. The Dolphins defeated the Jets 24-21 in week 2 as Olindo Mare hit a game winner with no time left. Miami had high expectations this season, and they have crumbled as Miami is having a miserable season, currently on an 8 game losing streak.

The Jets got on the board first with a Doug Brien 25 yard field goal. However, the Jets were ineffective and Miami hung tough answering with their own field goal and a 3-3 tie at the half. Miami kicked two more field goals in the third quarter, from 35 and 42 to take a 9-3 lead at the end of the third. Perhaps Pennington pushed, throwing two interceptions during the game that killed drives and set up Miami for easy scoring chances, however, early in the fourth he settled down and led a 7 play, 59 yard drive that resulted in a touchdown by Curtis Martin on a 10 yard run, and a 10-9 lead. The Jets punted on their last two possessions of the fourth quarter and Miami took the ball for one last time. Fiedler marched the team 76 yards and set up a 22 yard, game winning field goal attempt for Olindo Mare with 3 seconds left. Mare was true, and for the second time this season Miami defeated the Jets on the last play of the game.

If a lost to Miami was tough enough to swallow, the Jets dropped to the third seed when Kansas City defeated Chicago, and suffered injuries to Kareem McKenzie who is out for 4 weeks with a strained deltoid muscle, and Anthony Becht who is listed as questionable with an elbow injury.

Grades
Offense: F
The Jets turned the ball over three times, managed only 80 yards on the ground and just 10 points against a team who had won just four games this season. Pennington threw two more interceptions and finished the season with 20. On a positive, Curtis Martin kept his streak of 1,000 yard seasons as he gained 66 yards against the Dolphins. Santana Moss had a strong game, 6 catches for 93 yards.

Defense: D
The defense allowed one of the weakest offenses in football to drive down the field with playoff implications on the line and kick a game winning field goal. Dolphin receiver, James McKnight beat the secondary for 151 yards on 6 catches. John Abraham finished his strong regular season with 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Special Teams: F
Kicker Doug Brien missed two field goals, within his range that could have been the difference. Michael Bates had a rare opportunity to field a punt and lost 6 yards on the return. Kick and punt coverage did a satisfactory job.

Jets Sign Six

The New York Jets signed six players in the last year of their contracts to be with the team next season.

G Brent Smith 2 years $1,150,000
WR Jonathan Carter 2 years $940,000
LB Khary Campbell 2 years $1,070,000
LB Kenyatta Wright 2 years $1,070,000
CB Jacoby Shepherd 2 years $1,090,000
CB Jamie Henderson 2 years $950,000

Although Smith was the only starter this season all players will be competing for a roster spot next season.

Has anyone been following along? I feel I have put a lot of time into this first season, and have had little response. Need some encouragement from out there.

Congrats on the birth of your new one. I have a 1 year old, and I have so much fun with him. As you can see your Dolphins had a rough year, although they defeated me twice.

Grades

Offense: B+
The offense played a solid football game controlling the clock for just over thirty minutes with a variety of runs and passes. Chad Pennington had a fine game, completing 24 of 34 passes for 211 yards and 2 touchdowns, both to FB Jerrald Sowell. Curtis Martin balanced out with solid running behind a line that made enought holes for Martin, who finished with 72 yards. Santana Moss caught six passes for 90 yards against a tough New England secondary.

Defense: B
New England's Tom Brady was able to throw the ball at times, the unfortunate part is that New England tried to run the ball early against the Jets Defense that stoned them for 50 yards on 20 carries. Brady's yards came late in the game, when the Jets went to a prevent D and gave New England the short passes. Marvin Jones had a great game, stopping the run, finishing with 15 tackels.

Special Teams: B+
The return game was outstanding, including Dez White who filled in for injured Lamont Jordan on kickoff returns. He took the opening kickoff 44 yards that led to a touchdown on the opening drive. Stryzinski punted two of his four punts inside of New England's yard line late in the game helping the defense hold New England.

Next week the Jets travel to the #2 seed, Kansas City. Day and time to be announced.

Offense: B
The team ammased 367 yards in total offense and scored 21 points. However, two turnovers, penalties and a running game that averaged only 3.2 yards per carry, spelled L-O-S-S for the Jets. Pennington on all his passes except the one that was intercepted. Pennington completed 21 of 37 passes, for 290 yards and a touchdown. Curtis Conway, in perhaps his last game as a Jet, caught 8 passes for 139 yards, the kind of performance the Jets had hoped he had shown a few more times, when they signed him to replace Coles who went to Washington. Curtis Martin rushed for 61 yards on 21 carries, and seemed to run out of gas during the last four games. Santana Moss had two drops for the day, not helping the Jets when they could have used it.

Defense: C+
The goal of the defense coming into this game was to stop Holmes if not slow him down at least. They did not even do that, Holmes rushed for 106 yards on 23 carries and scored all three touchdowns for the Chiefs. He also caught 9 balls for 59 yards. John Abraham did all he could as he finished with 11 tackles and 2 sacks for the game. Mo Lewis finished, in perhaps his last game as a Jet, with 7 tackles, and another season without making it to the Super Bowl.

Special Teams: B+
Dan Stryzinski did an excellent job punting away from Dante Hall without sacrificing yardage. He still managed to average 40.8 yards per punt. Brien converted on all 3 extra point attempts despite the rain conditions.

The Jets begin the offseason after what could be considered overachievement.

Stadium Proposal

Stadium Proposal

The New York Jets have submitted a stadium proposal for the public to vote on. If the deal passes the Jets would have a new stadium for the 2009 season. The Jets are looking to have a Retractable Roof Stadium with a grass playing field. The capacity will be 66,500 with 6,500 Club Seats and 120 Luxury Boxes. The price of the proposed stadium is approximately $600 million. The Jets will contribute 5% or $30 million to the project.

Salary Cap Situation

Tough Decisions Coming

New York - The Jets are faced with tough decisions this off season. The team is currently $7,280,000 over the cap. The Jets would like to address the following needs:

A veteran QB to replace Testaverde as Pennington's backup. If Bulger does not get signed by a team to be a starter or perhaps if Mark Brunnel is released from Jacksonville as the Jets anticipate.

A starting SE to replace Curtis Conway who's cap cost of $2.6 million is too much. Conway will be released reducing his cap hit to $410,000. Conway has been a disappointment since he was signed to replace Coles. Conway finished the season with 52 receptions, and 631 yards. Possible replacements are Dennis Northcut from Cleveland or Darrell Jackson from Seattle.

The team would like to find a starting RG and LG. Brent Smith who started at RG will be retained, however, LG Dave Szott will be released. Szott is in his 13th season and scheduled to make $1.9 million. His cap hit will be $230,000 when released. Possible replacements are Adam Timmerman of St Louis, Cosey Coleman of Tampa Bay or Damien Woody from New England.

The Jets will be in search of a SLB, either through free agency or the draft. Mo Lewis who has been with the team for 14 seasons will be released. Lewis was scheduled to make $5.4 million this season. His cap cost when released will be $1.5 million when released. Possible replacement is Marcus Washington who played with Indianapolis the past 4 seasons.

At MLB the team will go with 2nd year man, Victor Hobson. At this time the team is leaning towards keeping Marvin Jones as a backup LB. Jones is scheduled to make $2.3 million this season. If the team decided to release Jones the cap hit would be $600,000.

The Jets will release nickle cornerback Donnie Abraham. Abraham was scheduled to make $3.6 million this season. His cap hit will be $250,000 this season. The nickle position replacement could be last year's starting FS, Derek Pagel if the team signs or drafts a FS.

Strong Safety Sam Garnes will be released after being replaced by Tyrone Carter. Garnes was scheduled to make $1.1 million this season. Garnes cap hit will be $170,000 this season.

The team would like to find a new starting Strong Safety as well. Possible replacements, Roger Beckett from Cincinatti, David Terrell from Washington and Donovan Darius from Jacksonville.

At Free Safety the Jets have interest in restricted free agent Deon Grant from Carolina if he is not signed by the Panthers.

Players who contracts are up at the end of the 2004 season include, Chad Pennington, John Abrahm, Shaun Ellis, Anthony Becht, Doug Brien, and Matt Walters who all could figure into the Jets future.
