Portland White Sturgeon
Inspired by the Colorado Springs Black Squirrels, I have decided to offer up my own career based on QuikSand's commonly known house rules. If you need a refresher, go here: http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~fof/ubb/...ML/000098.html
If you have no idea what I am talking about, what are you doing reading this? You should read the master, QuikSand's thread, he'll teach ya all about it. The Short version is: FOF 2001, Wall Street, empty cupboard start with the 2009 expansion team Ticket prices no higher than those of my nearest geographic competitor (Seattle) Several contract restrictions, including: -no signing non-rookie players, other than the second half of the 20-stage FA process -no unrealistic contract durations for first and second year players -no backloading of contracts - annual salary increases up to 25% only -any free agent seeking a bonus gets one at least as big as the median annual salary -URFAs may get 4yr doubling deal with modest bonus money No contract renegotiations No franchise tag Full roster of 53 each season Player from home state (Oregon) college at each position group at all times Making effort to sign and hold Oregon players whenever practical I'm allowing myself some slack with my FA restrictions with my Oregon school guys No initiating trades - may only accept CPU trade after adjusting it (reality check) I'm also adding a rule in regards to Coaches/Scouts. If I decide to make a change and I go after a Coach/Scout that was employed elsewhere during the previous season, as are most of the better ones, I must trade give them a #1 if I took their Coach, or a #2 if I took their Scout. I think this will make me really think before making a big splash in that market and follows well with the current NFL scene where teams are getting compensation for these type of people. In short, the team is being almost exclusively built from within, with a few fill-in types from the late rounds of free agency. Once my players get past their rookie deals, I compete on the open market to retain their services. Somewhat different from QuikSand, I'm starting from 2009, after taking my Anchorage Caribou to their first Bowl win, taking the NFC West expansion team, which happened to be Portland. I will draft Non-NFL players(those with 9 years or less experience). In this respect, I will be able to hit the ground running a little faster than a true "empty cupboard" team, but the team is completely fictional nonetheless and I will have to go up against the Austin Rattlers in the expansion draft. In case anyone wants to know, the SuperBowl champs for the seasons leading up to this were: Year Team As you can see, my geographic competition got out to a fast start, winning the 2000 bowl. They've went 81-63-0, 5-3 in the playoffs, 1 Bowl, 1 Championship. The best that I know, my college selection will be from: Oregon, Oregon State, Linfield, Portland State. That is all I could find that had players. I will try to take Washington state players as my second state, and No College and Small College will also be options, but I will try to nab any Oregon men I can. |

Scout Heath Stills, Age 36, 2years $690,000 QB, DL, DB: Very Good WR, K, OL, YT: Good RB, LB: Fair Coach Xavier Bennett, Age 40, 25-25(2 Playoffs) 1year $3,560,000 OL, Def Play: Excellent RB, WR, YT, DIS, AvInj: Very Good DB, K, Mot, Off Play: Good DL: Fair QB: Poor They should do ok, but Bennett's inability to develop a QB might hurt our young team early. I adjust my ticket prices to be at least 10% less than the proven Seahawks. I notice we play in a 67,500 seat Dome up here in Portland, so the weather won't bother us. Expansion Draft: I'm looking for good cheap talent, not something I expect to find, but I'm looking regardless. There isn't a lot of talent, of course, but I do find a handful of potentially useful Oregon guys, and I snap them up with my first 4 picks. I also notice a bug in the expansion draft process, you are not supposed to lose more than 3 players, yet I was able to select a 4th player from a team, I then tried to select a 5th, it lets you do that as well, but I clicked cancel. 2009 Free Agency
I wait through the first 10 stages then look for players under 9 years of service. There are only a few decent players available but with my new owners wide open 91 million dollar wallet, I can afford to shop this year. I get 7 new players signed, most noteably are a 5th year Center and 5th year DT who happens to be from Linfield, an Oregon school! 2009 Draft I get the #1 pick this year, hopefully for the last time ever, so I need to make it count. I have needs everywhere, obviously, so I'm merely looking to take the old BPA. I have a dilemna. The best potential guy is a 44/94, 44/100, 87 DE. The best current guy is a 24/66, 100/100, 38/99, 76/76, 55/55, 32/32, 100 WR. It is a deep WR draft and DEs are usually harder to come by, but this guy smells like a bust to me, and the WR, though not my prototypical WR type, is from Oregon State and I doubt I'll have many chances at a stud home state guy. Amateur Draft Report: I take a full 70 players to camp this year: As a trial, I'm going to show both pre and post draft at the same time, it should be easier to compare
Logan is still ok, big relief. The DE I thought about, Riddols, is still a stud, and the only boomer I sniffed out did, FB Carr. I'm happy with my initial draft. My new formatting helps me see that my scout thinks second round pick CB Kevin Hastings is a bust, losing all of his potential, but from looking at him, he stills looks like he has plenty of potential to fill, interesting. I hope you like my new formatting I used for training camp, it will improve next year.
I have also decided to partially amend my coach/scout for a draft pick rule. I will give the former team a 2nd round pick for a coach/1st if he is a former SuperBowl coach, and 4th for a Scout/3rd for a SuperBowl scout. This seems to make more sense to me than what I originally proposed. |

Now that I'm at home, I can play
 I think I'm going to try to do one other thing in this career. That is not base everything on ratings. If I am happy with a players performance, he will, despite a better rated backup, play. For new draftees that don't have stats, I plan on using them in the following ways: If he is a number 1 pick, he starts no matter what, even if he busts. If he is a number 2 pick, he may replace a starter that is doing good but not great. If he is a number 3 pick, he may replace a starter that is doing merely OK. Picks 4 through 7 can only replace a player doing poorly. Preseason can help or hurt players on the fringe of starting/not starting. This will make me actually pay attention to these games. If a drafted player breaks out, he will be treated like a 3rd round pick. All Undrafted RFA can only compete for backup roles, even if they breakout. Hopefully this will prevent me from waiting on a guy because I think I can get him later in the draft. I will try to reward players who play well in Free Agency as I see fit. Onto the 2009 Preseason: Of course since this is our first season, everyone is battling for jobs, except of course 1st round pick and Oregon State alum, Tony Logan. The first three games see rotations to get everyone equal oppurtunity to win a job, game 4 sees the apparent winners all playing together and turns out to be our only preseason victory, 13-10. Logan ended up having a great preseason. Mahoney won the starting RB job, but that will mostly be a committee job this year. Harlan and Guthrie were neck and neck for the starting QB job, Harlan played better but due to Guthrie throwing the ONLY TD pass of the preseason, he wins the job by default. Mahoney is hurt in our first ever game at the "Fish Pond" so their is already some rotation there. Johnnie Guthrie finished our first drive with a 4 yard TD pass to Malcolm Torres, things are starting in the right direction, regrettably the Rams don't care to be a part of such foolishness and rattle off 31 unaswered to end our visions of a win in our first ever game 31-7. Logan gets his first ever TD pass in game 3, in fact he gets 2, both from Harlan who replaces an injured Guthrie. Our first game with our closest Geographical Division rival, San Fran, who is also 0-3, sees us get creamed 27-3. FB Carr breaks his leg in week five, a big blow as he was a nice breakout player who had been playing well. We get our first win in week 11 against San Diego 23-17, but our fans didn't get to see it, for shame. We got shut out 5 times, including 3 of our last 4. This team needs LOTS of help. In comparison, Austin the other expansion team, finished 6-10. EA.com Front Office Football 2001 Chicago beats Oakland 27-24 in this years Super Bowl. 2010 Pre-Draft:
Due to us not having anyone worth paying last year, we made 6 million bucks. Bennett is up this year and I will look for a good developer of talent, though Bennetts game day skills were probably soley responsible for us actually winning A game last year. I'm going to take a small gamble this year as I can't afford to give up a draft pick to get the Coach I really covet, and I'm going after someone with Fair Injury. I lose out on him to the Pats who double my bid, making him one of the top 5 highest paid coaches. I stick with Bennett.
I have lots of room and lots of needs. My scout says my biggest need is a starting LB, kind of funny when you think that my only all pro was a LB, tarnished as that may be. Nobody is worth bidding on until someone else makes a move. When week 10 hits, I make several bids for overpriced talent that is at least better than my underpriced scrubs. I get most everyone I covet, which should boost my roster considerably. I'm offered a tempting 5th pick of round 2 for CB Kevin Hastings. Hastings played well last year and still projects to be a good CB for us, but this is a higher pick than what I used to get him last year. I decline it. The Free Agent acquisitions boost my Roster Rating to 33, a big improvement over the single digits of last year. [This message has been edited by TheRoyalOne (edited 01-11-2001).] |

2010 Draft and Camp
For the 2nd straight year, I have the #1 pick in the draft, a dubious distinction that I would like to shed soon. This draft is nowhere near as deep as last years and that's not saying much. Amateur Draft Report: Rnd 1 - Amos Lockwood, S, Oregon-No great players available, took another top notch Oregon player, 92,82,92,86,x,x,46 Rnd 2 - Billy Allen, LB, Mississippi-best player at key need, pass rush specialist Rnd 3 - Chester Buckingham, RB, Northern Illinois-surprised he fell, will probably start Rnd 4 - Cole Bramstedt, DT, Baylor-bpa Rnd 5 - Doug Tucker, TE, Oregon-decent Oregan man Rnd 6 - Alex Deese, RB, Oregon-Oregon man with a chance to break Rnd 7 - Ralph Powell, G, North Carolina State-Needed some guards, best one available. For what it's worth I really liked the side by side view. Is it too much of a pain to edit. I can see how that could be. If it is, maybe keep it in the old toolbox until a really exciting year, like the first one usually is and bring it out then.

Welcome back to the 2nd year of Sturgeon football.
Here is the narrowed down 53 man roster I'm taking into the season: EA.com Front Office Football 2001 I've gotten to 10 Oregon players and except for the QB/P/K group, have one in each group, there just simply isn't anything available there yet. I feel the free agent acquisition of Pimentel will help us go a long way to surpassing 1 win, hopefully, we can win 4. The preseason sees us go 3-1, a welcome sight, too bad they don't count. Our only injury is to return specialist Courtney Reilly is down 3-5 weeks with turf toe. We lose our opener 28-33 to the Rams and QB Sean Sheen who was out first QB with Anchorage in 2002, but it shows that we are a better team already, we scored a dismal 119 points last year. We win in our second game, 30-3 vs Atlanta, then drop two straight going into San Fran. We're both 1-3, they clobber us, and we're now 0-3 vs them lifetime, though we can say that to lots of teams. We get win #2, 24-16 against 1-6 Minnesota, but we have surpassed last years win total and are still on pace to meet our 4 win goal. We drop a game to fellow expandee, the Austin Rattlers before beating the Bills 17-14, but at a cost, Tony Logan goes down with a hip pointer. We drop our 2nd to the Rams, but give our second to the Falcons, 33-6, and we are now 4-8, everything from here is gravy. Next up is a big game with the 49ers. They're in a race for the division crown at 8-4 as they've gone 7-1 since we last met. We give them a blow towards derailment, 22-17, a big win for our franchise. 23-17 win vs the Panthers, and all of a sudden, we've won 3 in a row! Washington ends our hopes of having a .500 season though, 13-16 thanks to a 29 yard TD pass with 19 seconds left. We lose our last game too, and finish 6-10, better than I had hoped and something to build on. The 49ers really got rolling and finished 11-5 on the year, but thanks to our victory over them, they will have to play on the opening weekend. EA.com Front Office Football 2001 My old Anchorage Caribou look to be the favorite this year, along with Detroit. They do meet in the Super Bowl, and the Lions with 17-10 on a 93 yard interception return with 1 minute left in the game, talk about a heartbreaker. 2011 Pre Draft
No retirees for the Sturgeon this year, but that's not surprising. What is surprising is we lost 34 million dollars last year, something I hadn't intended to do. This is mostly due to us spending a lot more money and still not having a large fan base, but I need to spend to win and need to win to get fans, so I'll live with it for now if my owner can. My scouts contract has expired. I'm happy with him, though I prefer my old scout with the Caribou better, but I can't afford to give the 3rd round pick for him that Anchorage would deserve as he has a Super Bowl on his resume. I will try to resign my own guy, he's pretty cheap, 3 years $290,000. He signs right away. Here is our salary picture heading into Free Agency: EA.com Front Office Football 2001 We're actually overextended already, not a good sign, but we don't have many free agents, so I can make some cuts and get ready for the draft, but I don't expect any waves in the open market. I really can't believe how many of my guys are making as much as they are and I start making some liberal cuts, they just don't deserve the money. WR Wendall Victor goes, he was my 4th WR G Jimmy Smith goes, he was my 3rd Guard CB Norbert Delgado goes, he was my 4th CB, Oregon guy, but still way overpaid DE Howard Dill goes, no talent at all QB Johnnie Guthrie goes, backup QB, not good as seen in our inaugral year DT Billy Anderson goes, not good at all None of these guys were starters last year, so they don't have to pass the performance test. That takes me to 40 players and 16 million in room, I might still need to make some more cuts. I'm only going after two of my guys, Fite who was tremendous last year and Torres who caught the first ever Sturgeon TD. Fite is wanting 4,500,000 a year, I can deal with that and put in an offer. Torres is a modest talent, so I'll wait until someone else offers anything for him, 3 mill a year right now is a little steep. The Vikings are outbidding me on Fite, I bump to 2 years 10 mill. Week 4 sees Fite take our offer over the one from the Vikings. Torres is snatched from underneath my nose in week 7 by the Chargers, only 1.8 a year too. As I expected, nobody I can afford after week 10. We have the 9th overall pick in the upcoming draft. |

2011 Draft and Camp
For the first time with the Sturgeon, I don't get to pick whomever I want, I will have to wait until the 9th pick, something I wish I could have done last year with the subpar class. I really need to upgrade my OL in this draft, especially at guard. My draft board has a superb LB at the top from Arkansas, a nice DT, a T, a C, and a couple Gs. The only good Oregon player is a potential bust at CB, I'll probably avoid him. By pick five, the DT and T are gone, pick 6 is my favored G, 7 and 8 are other guys. As much as I need the OL help, I take the LB, he is just too good to pass up, being better than all my guys currently, and potential better than any LB EVER. The C I liked is still there in round 2, easy choice. Amateur Draft Report: Interestingly, Dallas tried moving to Lubbock this year but failed. Going into camp with 55 players: EA.com Front Office Football 2001 Fingers crossed and... EA.com Front Office Football 2001 Everything is good, why Schindler dropped from a 13 to a 9 I don't know as the only real change is his endurance went from 99 to 90. His potentials are all still 100, I can't wait to see what he can do. I think with the improved defense thanks to Schindler, we can shoot for 8 wins this year and if things go right, maybe we can sneak in the back door to the playoffs. |

Gotta agree, the first year you did the side-by-side camp results was pretty cool. Did you do it in a spreadsheet? Just curious, I like it, and it would be nice to see if there is a less painful way to do something like that...

QS, yes, I did the print out file, then opened it in excel and since it is space delimited, pretty easy to set up. Then do it again after the draft and cut and paste the correlating info. All of that is easy. The pain came when getting that info back to the board in a nice and neat format. Maybe I'm overlooking something really obvious or doing something extra that I don't need to, but it just never reformatted correctly, especially the headers of the columns.
It works nice for my own records though. |
