While you're all in a praying mood...

Last year, some of you may remember the mention of my wife and I trying to conceive a baby and the troubles we're having. In fact, Cam was selfless enough to offer his help. But I'd like my first born to have SOME hair at least.

Well, a couple months ago my wife's OB/GYN sent her to a renowned local fertility specialist who determined that she has a condition involving sugar levels and hormones that inhibit ovulation. He has been treating her with medication and we have attempted to induce ovulation this week along with an artificial insemination attempt yesterday and one today. It's not in-vitro, as we can't afford that. But they take my "boys" wash them and put them up in there further and more accurately than I can do so myself.

My wife's insurance will cover three months of fertility treatment before her current plan runs out, so we have three tries at this before the cost gets up to where we'd have to save-up to try again. She'd not be very happy if she knew I was typing this on the internet, but I'll take all the well wishes and prayers we can get.

FWIW, she's been a real trooper and handled this situation well. She has been put on a low-sugar diet because insulin spikes hurt our chances. She has quite a sweet tooth but she has been very disciplined.

Anyway, as you say your prayers over the next few days, I'd appreciate if you threw in a little special intention for one of the "boys" to get through.

Heh Heh. That's the idea. I forgot to mention the vitamins the doc put me on just to keep them nice and healthy. Oh, and I thought I'd pick up a couple protein bars this week just to get a little extra into my system. Man. Those things are nasty. I stuck with peanut butter.

Good luck scooper. The missus and I are trying again, after a disaster in the fall. I am confident in my ability to get them up there as far and accurately as need be.

Hopefully we'll be swapping pictures in the fall.

The wife and I did the same thing - the "Turkey Baster" method as we like to call it. It didn't work for us (and insurance didn't pay for a damn thing, so we footed the bill).

Basically, the Doctors told us that it was almost impossible for us to conceive on our own - they gave us a 1% chance. I said, "Well, Hell, Lisa and I will just do it 100 times and we're set!" The doctor informed me that it didn't work like that...

Anyway, we were going to give the IUI (Intra-Uterine Insemination - "Turkey baster") another try, but the doctor told us that Lisa had cysts on her overaries. They weren't dangerous, but they could inhibit her ovulation. So they told us we'd have to wait another few months before they went away. So they cancelled the IUI.

So a few days later, I get a call at work. It's my wife. "I think I'm ovulating," she says. I had a meeting that I had to go to right after work, but I said that I'd come home and we'd give it a try the natural, good-old-fashioned way. Lisa tried to talk me out of it because it was a pain to drive all the way home and rush back out for the meeting (1 hr drive each way), but I told her that we had to try.

I said, "We're going to do this. We're going to make it happen. Oh, and I'll gladly make the drive knowing that I'll get laid as soon as I get there!" She cracked up at this. What most people don't realize is that when you're having fertility problems sex loses most of its enjoyment. It becomes a chore almost. You have to have sex on this certain day, but you can't have it for the 3-4 days leading up to that day or your swimmers will be less potent. You're always a little anxious about it wondering if it's going to "take" this time. You feel a little down about yourself because you haven't gotten her pregnant yet (or your spouse feels down)... So it's important to keep things light and not-so-serious.

So I got home, rushed through the door and there she was wearing brand new lingerie. Woo-hoo! It was a quicky, but it was a goodie!

2 weeks later Lisa told me she was pregnant. We had conceived on October 20th at 5:45pm.

The baby's due in July. So don't give up, scooper! I hope the IUI goes well for you, but even if you have to go back to the natural method for a few months, keep trying. The doctors are often wrong.

Awesome story Kwit! I'm glad it worked out for you guys. I know what you mean about the "the chore," though. I never thought I'd feel that way, but there was a time when she was having trouble gauging her ovulation (turns out she wasn't even ovulating) when her doc told her to basically do it every other day over a couple week period. That doesn't sound like much, but sometimes you're just not in the mood. You can be sick, or tired from work, or pissed off at something, but if you want the baby, you do it. So we did. Most times it was still enjoyable, but there were times when it was a chore.

With the current doc, though, we have the schedule nailed down so we can pick and choose. Don't think for a minute that the turkey baster is the only attempt we're making this week.

As soon as I recover from the apoplectic fit you just gave me, I'll post a lucid response to that.

Hang in there scooper. I know a lot of couples that have gone through similar situations and are now proud parents.

I'll be sending every ounce of good karma I can muster your way. Then I will go to the karma store, buy some mini-cheesecakes, eat them, then use the change I have left over to buy MORE karma and send that to you too...

May your sperm swim like Matt Biondi on steroids...

Scoop her, scooper!!!

Oh, and tell your wife to suprise you with some sexy lingerie. Sounds like that might have given KWhit's swimmers some incentive!!

I can echo this, as the product of a relationship where the doctors had written off my parents ever conceiving. My folks had been married for 11 years. In their case, it was my father having a very low sperm count that was the problem. The doctors told them it was unlikely it would ever happen, and after several years of trying (of course, techniques in the 60's are nowhere near where they are today), my folks had actually given up to the point that they were going through the first stages of paperwork/interviews to adopt, when suddenly my mom got pregnant with me. 3-1/2 years later, my brother came along.

So doctors can be wrong and good things can happen. Chin Up, and Good luck!
