Aretha Franklin's cover of Let it Be (pretty great) was actually released two months before the Beatles' original version.

Lenny Kravitz: American Woman
Adds nothing of value from the original and, surprisingly for Kravitz, lacks swing and feels rather robotic. It was severely over-played when it came out. |

I mean, I am absolutely not against covers - some of my favorite songs are covers. I just don't need country covers of songs from other genres.
(Heard for the first time today Bonnie Raitt's version of Need You Tonight. That's probably about as country as I'll go, as she generally has enough blues and rock mixed in. Still, not sure it's really needed.)

The Kravitz one feels worse than it is because it was so overplayed.

While not the worst cover ever, the Byrds' version of "Hey Joe" on Fifth Dimension is dreadfully woeful. I otherwise really like that album, but I don't make it more than 3 seconds into Hey Joe before I'm pressing skip.

I've got a category in my head kind of like
"Covers Not terrible but merely servicable covers somewhat devoid of the passion that made the original great" "It's My Life" - No Doubt (Original Talk Talk) "The Man Who Sold The World" - Nirvana (Original David Bowie) (yes faithful to it but meh) "Paranoid" - Megadeth (original Black Sabbath) |

IMO Nirvana's version of Man Who Sold the World is 100x better than Bowie's. I heard Nirvana's first, but I've never liked Bowie's version, and Nirvana's version is easily my favourite Nirvana song... probably my favourite "grunge" song, too.

Ahhhhhhhh!
JUST saw a commercial for Merci chocolate. They use some DREADFULLY BLAND versions of Sam & Dave's "I Thank You." It's not even this one, so they have multiple neutered versions of this. Merci Chocolate Christmas Commercial 2016 - YouTube ZZ Top, fine. But these are abominable.

+1. Having a hard time imagining how someone could perceive that cover as lacking passion.

i dunno. I like it. It's probably one of the better covers I've heard but it doesn't totally improve upon the song for me. I liked it more when it first came out. Now it just sounds like a clone. I was speaking more of the other two songs in my list ...more included this one as it really just is another version. It is by no means 100x better. It's the same level. |

Uncle Ben's commercial with kid singing "Show Me the Way" - also bad.

Ah, right. I have no need for Rascal Flatts' version of "Life is a Highway."

All Tom Jones does is covers, he is a crooner, so I am not sure that he really applies here.
