FOFC Favorite Rock Act - Round 1 Group G
Happy 4th of July as we move on to group G after three upsets in the previous bracket, marking a tournament first. This bracket doesn't promise near as much suspense, as I think most of the favorites win comfortably.

Was thinking this group might be pretty one sided, no surprises here.

Thought Muse might give Rod Stewart a run, actually.

I voted for Muse. I think they're terrific. But what BYU said.

I didn't figure Muse would have a shot, but they've been around long enough to already have their creativity downswing come into effect. Probably a decade outside the FOF demographic though.
Still, their first 3 albums are ranked somewhere in my favourites list, and they put on one of the best live shows in the business.

Jefferson Airplane lose all cred for the abysmal "We Built This City" and all the other 80s crap

okay so we are JUST voting on the White Rabbit/Somebody to Love version.
Actually the Jefferson Starship years were pretty solid as well. |

Neil Young and Stephen Stills were in Buffalo Springfield. Will that help people vote for them?

I'm sad that Evanescence is getting knocked out this early.

That's true, the bad version was just Starship but I split them up with Balin and after Balin, so I consider the Jefferson Starship stuff with him as part of this (The Airplane) version, while Jefferson starship post Balin and Starship are grouped together. He really was a talented guy and losing him affected the quality of their work greatly IMO. This rehearsal version of Count on Me before Balin left is awesome. Evanescence is amazing. I kinda see them as descendants of Heart. Can see the influence. |

Queen is the only act in this round that I care about. And I care about them A LOT! Not my favorite band in the world but will def be my favorite in this competition. (Because my fav 3 bands are English and just never made a dent over here. And my other favs are punk. Ooh. Clash v. Queen. That would be hard.)
The popularity of Muse stuns me. I would never have thought that an over-produced three-man band with a lead singer with a speech impediment would make it anywhere. How they ever got out of Britain is beyond me. |

Two of my top 7 all-time bands are in this round (Heart and Queen), so good round for me.
I did mess up when I voted for Muse, I was thinking of Throwing Muses. But I'm ok with that since I would not vote for Rod Stewart anyways. Edit: Do people not know who was in Buffalo Springfield??? Last edited by Buccaneer : 07-05-2017 at 07:09 PM. |

I always felt like Evanescence was just a derivative "goth pop" metal band, and I think their lack of creative growth speaks to that. 3 albums in 15 years, each worse than the one before it, culminating with their most recent album which is like a poorly rendered shadow of their original work. They struck while the iron was hot with a popular formula, the only thing different about them then was that they were fronted by an attractive female. By the time they put out their first album in 2003, Lacuna Coil had already been making pretty much the same music for a few years with an almost identical female lead except that they were doing it in Italy. That's just my (admittedly harsh) opinion.
Heart is still making good music and Ann Wilson has one of the most iconic female rock voices of all time.. I don't feel like there is any comparison. Edit: Going back and retracing the origin of Evanescence and other similar bands of that era, I must say that I think their best and most versatile work was their self produced "Origin" album from 1999. It was much more diverse and had a lot more going for it than anything they made after, which makes me wonder how much producers are to blame and why the band never revisited some of the material on it in later recordings. It seems they could have been "better" than they ever were but something stood in their way, whether that be creative differences between Lee and Moody or perhaps a producer stifling the more unique aspects of their music.. The inability of either of the two to reach the same heights after they parted ways seems like more of a story of wasted potential now than it was several hours ago, from my perspective.

Go listen to Supermassive Black Hole, that song beats anything Rod Stewart ever did. Except maybe Stacey's Mom. |

Rod Stewart wrote/sang/performed "Stacy's Mom"? Wasn't that a Fountains of Wayne song?
Not impressed with "Supermassive Black Hole." They are singing a higher note than Rod Stewart ever did. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Rod Stewart fan but I do tend to look back favorably upon a lot of 80s music. Except Def Leppard for some reason. |

If Rod Stewart had died in some kind of accident, or maybe an overdose, in about 1977 he'd be fondly remembered as a great talent who was taken before his time.
Unfortunately he didnt, so all the crap he's churned out since then has ruined his legacy. |

He has an awesome legacy: he was found passed out behind a stadium and they had to pump his stomach, only to find a gallon of semen.

Which he denied, for the record. I'm just glad he acknowledged it at all, as that rumor was somehow common gossip for 5th graders of my age.

IMO this was the album where Muse started to come unraveled. I think they hit a sweet spot between alt rock/classical/art rock on their first 2 albums (masterpieces as far as I'm concerned), before tilting further to the alt rock side on Absolution (still quite good for 70-80% of the album). Black Holes was where they started to lose the balance, and the quality starts to vary greatly track to track for my money...
