FOFC's Favourite Movie - Opening Round (Part 8)

And with this we will reach the half way mark of the opening round, which seems mostly to be about filtering out the older and international films. With that said, there are some in both categories that resonate with voters and have had good showings.

Voting for part 7 can be found here and will conclude Wednesday afternoon. The complete bracket with results to date can be found here.

Poll for part 8 to follow...

Apparently the foreign title for Pan's Labyrinth is El laberinto del fauno.

While I absolutely love Shawshank, I was a little surprised to learn that it is the top ranked movie on IMDB (and thus the #1 seed). I was a little hesitant to include Phantom of the Paradise as while it is a cult movie (and I know someone who owns it) it's cult status was limited to exclusive pockets of North America. But it was the highest movie on Rolling Stones cult movies list that did not make the top 250, so I stuck with my selection criteria.

American History X vs. Donnie Darko could be a great battle and I really hope that Pan's Labyrinth has the support to knock off Inside Out before one of those two meets its demise against Shawshank. I have to think that Lebowski is going to vastly out perform its relatively low seed and I could see it potentially going up against Shawshank to decide this bracket.

Holy crap. Singin' in the Rain versus The Big Lebowski. How in the world do you compare the two?!?!

Intrigued to see how Spotlight versus The Dark Knight Rises turns out as well.

Those two, plus the Inside Out vs Pan's Labyrinth votes are going to be interesting.

Intriguing set.

Shawshenk remains my favorite inspirational movie.

I know Inside Out was well done and thought of, but l never saw it, so choosing the visual pleasure that is Pan's Labyrinth was easy.

I love the Batman series but TDK Rises was just a solid movie at best. Spotlight is a terrific and important film that IMO is still underrated, despite winning the Best Picture last year.

Strangely enough, never saw Donnie Darko, so I am rolling with American History X, one of the most important movies ever made, IMO.

Funny to see Interstellar at #34 on this list. I am an unabashed Nolan fan, am a noted apologist for this film and remain dazzled by the amazing visuals and effects in this one, and yet to me I feel #34 feels quite abit too high for it.

Singin in the Rain losing to The Big Lebowski would be the biggest travesty yet.

Not a lot of movies I like in this set. Half-hearted vote for the Dark Knight Rises. Those movies were a mess.

My favorite movie all time (Shawshank) will likely go against one of my top five favorites (Pan's Labyrinth) in round 2. Horrible luck for Pan's Labyrinth in terms of seeding.

How is the barely mediocre TDKR beating Spotlight?

I'm not sure if travesty is the right word, but I'm certainly on your side of this debate. Singin' in the Rain is just a great, great movie. The Big Lebowski is a lot like Napoleon Dynamite for me--cult classics they may be, but not cults of which I am a member.

Lebowski is one of my favorite movies. Though TBF, there's a personal connection to it.

See, I used to be in a bowling league, and was when the movie came out. One of the guys on the team and I, who'd often go to movies together, went to check it out. After it ended, he looked at me with wide eyes and said, "Holy shit, dude. You're The Dude, I'm Walter, and Other Guy is Donnie!" And I'm like, "Yeah... pretty much." Our personalities and group dynamics fit those three characters perfectly. It was surreal.

I'm actually a huge Coen Bros. fan, but The Big Lebowski is probably my least favorite movie they did. However, even if this were one of my favorite Coens (No Country for Old Men, O Brother Where Art Thou, Raising Arizona), I would still be voting for Singin in the Rain, because it's one of the best films ever made.

I saw the Big Lebowski late, my friends overhyped it to me to the point that it could have never lived up to expectations, and then when we watched it one of the guys I watched it with was one of those assholes who says every line of the movie as its happening out loud, so I didn't really get to watch the movie, I just got to listen to a guy I know recite it while the video was playing. It never had a chance.

My excuse is that I voted very late last night, and I wasn't thinking straight. Almost abstained from it as I thought both movies were "barely mediocre", but I clicked Dark Knight Rises because it gave us that hilarious South Park episode. I did say I wasn't really thinking straight.

That is when you tell the guy to STFU or leave. It is funny for certain parts of movies/shows, when you've all seen it and are having a good time, otherwise it is just obnoxious. While it isn't the greatest movie ever by any stretch, you should give it another go w/o the asshole.

Thanks to the recs here, I watched Singin' in the Rain this weekend. Thanks for the heads up. Very funny movie. The physical comedy was still LOL funny today.
