FOFC Favourite Movie - Opening Round (Part 2)

Figured I'd continue on with the opening round with the first part set to close tomorrow.

This is for your favourite movie, whatever term that means to you. A few interesting matchups in this round including Braveheart v. Gone Girl, Star Wars v. Jaws, and Good Will Hunting v. A Beautiful Mind. I also think that Lock, Stock may be poised for an upset.

For those that want to look ahead, the entire bracket with updated results can be found here.

I hope Lock, Stock isn't an upset. Some like it hot is a fun and classic film. It would be a shame if it doesn't make the next round!

These matchups are crazy.

Braveheart and Gone girl is about as opposite as you can get.

Star Wars v. Jaws, Cmon.

Yeah, tough draw for Jaws. Second round gets even crazier with the potential matchups. Making it to round three (round of 64) is an accomplishment in and of itself.

That Jaws/Star Wars matchup completely caught me off guard. That is insane.

I was going to comment on Star Wars/Jaws being a brutal first round matchup, but everyone else beat me to it.

Of all the movies in this round of voting, I think Star Wars and Jaws would both finish in the top seven of these 16 movies. That is beyond a brutal draw. Jaws was one of the movies I had planned to see go pretty far. RIP.

I thought A Beautiful Mind would be putting up a better fight

Horrible matchup for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, but it beats out my Back to the Future nostalgia. It's my go-to movie when we've got friends over with young kids, and the adults usually end up watching it as intently as they do.

This was another I had a brief moment of nostalgia for, because I do enjoy Nasicaa, but I realized that there are very few movies that I would actually vote for it over, so did not bother mentioning it.

Good question. I think I've got to give it to the higher seed, unless someone has any better ideas.

Yeah. Higher seed or coin flip. Or if they draw more votes than another winner I think both should advance

I wanted to love Gone Girl the movie but in my opinion, it didn't come close to living up to the book.

I kind of like the idea of the lower seed in the tiebreaker taking the spot of a lower vote-total winner from elsewhere in the same bracket. So in this case Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels would replace Like Stars on Earth and move on to be crushed by Back to the Future in the second round.

On second thought, maybe it's totally unnecessary

I thought about these different ways but the problem is that the website I'm using to track the results won't let me advance a winner that is not from that matchup. So what I settled on for a tiebreaker is taking the movie with the higher rating on IMDB. In this case, Some Like It Hot was an 8.3 while Lock, Stock... was an 8.2. Because so many movies are so close in their rating, in the event of a tie in rating, I would move to total votes, in which case Lock, Stock... would have prevailed.
