Why does ESPN think this matters?

On the front page they have the result of the ND- Syracuse game and how it hurt USC. They're going to fell real silly after Georgia burninates LSU later today.

Funny thing is, if you read the analysis by Brad Edwards, there's a chance (if OU loses) that USC could be #1 in both polls and end up #3 in the BCS.

Why should USC pass OU if by some freak occurance the Sooners do lose?

OU would have lost to a better team, but oh right, USC lost first.

Well LSU is the favorite just as USC and Oklahoma is. For the past 2 months LSU has been pretty clearly better than Georgia on both sides of the ball. If you must speculate and assume a win for either side, LSU makes plenty of sense right now.

That said, this game is making me nevous as hell(as an LSU fan). I just don't know what to expect. I am confident that if LSU plays like its capable of, it looks like its a chance at the National Championship for the Tigers. But who knows how a team is gonna react when its in the pressure cooker like this? Saban is a helluva coach at getting his players to get down to buiness though, so I am hoping for the best. Sugar Bowl here we come!(hopefully)

(and in case we end up needing a little help if we beat Georgia, Geaux Boise State tonight!)

It depends on whether you think the polls should reflect the best team over the entire season, or the best team *right now*. Losses at the beginning of the season tend not to hurt as much because teams correct and learn. Losing at this point means someone has learned better than you.

Given that Oklahoma has been annointed this year's "lightyears ahead of everyone else" team (weren't they saying that about Miami last year?), if they lose why shouldn't USC jump ahead?
