A new puzzle, perhaps

Once a week or so, I think back to something that got started at one of those seemingly annual threads here at FOFC.

And I think to myself... "yeah, if I could do it over again, I'd pay thirty cents to avoid having to think about an axe murderer."

Solve.

You prefer an axe murderer to an ice pick killa?

You bought something online that cost $5 but was delivered by someone who may or may not be an axe murderer. Paying the 30 cents in MD sales tax would have been worth the peace of mind of Axey McChopchop not knowing where you live.

Lovely guesses, each potentially more satisfying as the actual fact pattern, which may prove very difficult to "get."

My "correct" answer may be third place in the clubhouse now. Alas.

There is still a true puzzle in there, with an intended answer that hasn't even been sniffed yet.

Sounds like a "Alright Boyz..." thread, or a "What are you reading/watching/listening to, 20xx edition" thread.

Are there additional hints in post 4? Thinking out loud the quotes and then the use of the word sniffed could be hinting at something.

I'm going with some connection to the Michael Meyers movie "so I married an axe murderer"

Just don't know what it is yet

Heh, that was actually my first thought too.

I like the thought of it being a 201_ thread, and I think there's something in the phrase "Once a week or so." That could mean a regular show, either television or podcast, or perhaps the NFL season.

30 cents is just way too weird. 15 times 2 cents? Giving his 2 cents.. using the axe on 60% of Fitty Cent?

Two things.

First, a new hint by reframing an old hint. When I wrote "annual" I did indeed mean that my inspiration came from one of those threads that gets run every year or so, usually with a year in it. But I did a search, and it turns out I was incorrect. It instead came from a thread that just gets bumped every once in a while. I still occasionally can turn out one of those, it seems. So, ironically enough, I guess instead of "annual" it should have read "perennial" for gardening enthusiasts.

Second, there's a stab in the thread now that is very, very close. It's a wide open foothold for someone to noodle the answer, even without having any idea what I'm talking about with the FOFC thread reference above. And I think in a modern context, the thirty cents reference is at least widespread enough to enable groupthink here, even if one person lacks all the needed insight.

Nice work so far.

...actually, if the responses in the thread were a dartboard, we'd have one dart that is maybe in the outer ring of the bullseye, and another one that's maybe an inch away. Put the logic of the two of them together, perhaps with a bit of internet sleuthing, and I think you've got it.

"I still occasionally can turn out one of those" makes me think that Quik started the thread, whatever thread it is.

Could it be something where he used a shorthand or something (or maybe didn't come into the thread to make a correction) to avoid paying .30 in texting or roaming charges or something when he posted the thread? And the shorthand causes him to think of an ax murderer?

I like the app idea and there's a hell of a thread on iPhone apps that gets bumped occasionally but isn't an annual thread.

Going back to digamma's comment in post #11, the Podcast Suggestion Thread seems to fit the description that it is a perennial thread that could have been mistaken as an annual thread because it's bumped only every so often as new podcasts seasons come and go.

Podcasts such as Serial or This American Life contain subject matter relating to violent crime.

Quik did recently contribute to that thread.

I'm lost as to the thirty cent reference.

Is it the grammar thread pertaining to Axe vs Ax? Or possibly something to do with Axe deodorant. Maybe he cheaped out on Old Spice or Right Guard?

30 cents is the deposit on a six-pack of beer. You can get back and forth from there to the movie via Michael Richards and the Michigan bottle deposit scam.

That's all I got.

Perhaps you get a constant Netflix recommendation for either this movie or another Mike Meyers movie and you would pay 30 cents to turn that off? Not sure there is any basis to the 30 cents reference yet.

Nobody in an FOFC thread would even tell me, or anyone, that I should watch this movie. We can agree on that, right?

The way it's phrased, doesn't it suggest that somebody murdered an axe?

You walk past the same red box machine and see this movie prominently featured once a week?

You take a 30 cent toll road once a week and they have an old movie billboard?

So, let's go looking for QS threads that get bumped every now and then.

I thought maybe it had something to do with the SIMAAM soundtrack - maybe a pop song from it? Maybe if Quik had spent an extra 30 cents he would have seen a different movie so he wouldn't have to think about the movie ever time he hears Two Princes or There She Goes?

Or maybe even Rush by Big Audio Dynamite, which might have a couple "that points" in the song (or, one of those points in the song where the song is made to sound old - "rhythm and melody...").

Okay, while I'm tempted to just hand out the kewpie doll (got it right this time, check the history) this is basically spot on. You deserve the credit.

But I really feel like 30 cents is worth solving for. So, I'll torture you some more.

The movie is right, though I have never seen it.
The song is right. ("There She Goes")

And I hear it in my car maybe once a week or so.

Why the 30 cents?

..by the way, "Two Princes" is also on the same drive-to-school-with-daughters playlist, and I managed to avoid the same problem here, somehow. But I had no idea.

You bought the song from the soundtrack rather than from the album ($.99 vs $1.29) and you have to see the movie cd cover version whenever it plays?

I somehow doomed myself to failure by instantly envisioning Axe-wielding Uber drivers. You clearly didn't get the same image. Good job.

Precisely right.

My car has an iPod audio plugin, meh icy "helpfully" displays the album cover.

Daughters and I call this "the song where we only like one line."
