Actually i am more selfishly looking for Podcasts than anything else, so i figured that maybe there will be even more aditions than in the 2011 thread

I have just started listening to The History Of Rome , which is really well done and well structured with episodes centering on events so that you can pick what interests you. The episodes on the War with Hannibal were amazing.

I also got recommended Dan Carlin´s Hardcore History (very infrequent and his older ones aren´t free, at least not legally ) and loved it. Among the freely available is a monster series on the decline of the Roman Republic (not the empire, just the republic, so basically everything before Ceasar takes over), also a shorter one on Fernando Magellan early exploration in general.
What makes him fun to listen to is that he doesn´t simply repeat stuff you know but adds his own viewpoint to it.

Anybody know of any other history podcasts that are good and maybe a bit more frequent and/or widespread with their topics ? I also listen to stuff you missed in history class but it´s a bit basic and one of the girls doing it has a terrible voice ...

Russillo on NBA Today is the best podcast for my (free) money's worth. Unfortunately, he only does it on Monday's now, when he used to do it 3 times a week.

My podcast listening has really dropped off over the last year or so.

Still regularly listen to podcast editions of NPR's Wait Wait and Car Talk.
Radiolab is still in the rotation, though it doesn't come out as often.
In the last year I've started listening to SFFAudio, a podcast about science fiction and fantasy audiobooks. They do a lot of readalongs, along with a new releases podcast every month or so (this is the podcast I was on last week).
I've also started listening to the Science Fiction Book Review Podcast (SFBRP). This one and SFF have definitely gotten me reading more critically.

I still listen to the CAGCast and Sword and Laser podcasts, too.

ESPN's Football Today hosted by Ross Tucker is excellent as well. Tucker has to be one of the more underrated analysts in the business but he is an extremely intelligent (Princeton grad) ex-offensive lineman who's able to provide some insight that is typically out of the norm.

Disappointed that this is coming to an end. In the last podcast (number 173), Mike Duncan said that with a child on the way, he's not going to have the time to do this much longer (his wife is 7 months pregnant), and that the podcast will end with the end of the Western Roman Empire (Romulus Augustus abdicating to Odoacer), which is still a few decades off (he's in the 450s AD right now).

The total length of the Podcast right now is less than an hour short of 3 days long.

It was weekly during last season but has been spotty in the offseason. Unfortunately, one of the co-hosts, Joe Sheehan, has obviously been having some major personal issues (hinted at in a series of very cryptic tweets over the weekend) and it's on hiatus until further notice.

Between walking the dog, working out, and commuting I've really developed into a podcast junkie this year after previously not even having either Itunes installed or owning an MP3 player.

I was getting a little tired of people yapping about sports, current events, or anything, so I went looking for a fictional, radio-drama style podcast, not knowing if such a thing existed, and found "We are alive". I'm really enjoying it so far, and there's tons to catch up on, it's been going since 2009. It's a topic that's more than over-saturated at this point - zombies, but if fits the bill for what I'm looking for. It's similar to the World War Z audiobook except without the brilliant voice acting, but it's good enough, it got right into things immediately, and is has many, many episodes. Anyone else listening to anything new?

*Cashing In with TJ Miller-Tuesday Generally a bizarre hour each week. They usually have me cracking up. Perhaps an acquired taste.

Making it with Riki Lindholme-Tuesday She's 1/2 of Garfunkle and Oates, and has interviewed some really big name guests of late. Seems to focus a lot on the auditioning process and things that other people don't usually talk about.

For Crying Out Loud/Alison Rosen-2 more Carolla digital podcasts. I can usually take these shows or leave them. But generally good to fill up an hour if I have nothing else to listen to.

I found this one through this board, and love it. Once or twice it's even compelled me to watch the movie involved. I would have never otherwise learned about Birdemic: Shock and Terror, and my life is surely richer for having found that.

I've thought about it, being a big fan of the nonfiction (especially history) podcasts, but I don't really feel I'm enough of an expert to do any in any field. Rome is out (could not do a better job than the History of Rome podcast), I could do the Mongols, but there's a severe lack of original sources with them prior to the European travelers going there and writing about it.

I like the Adam Carolla Show and BS Report. I'd also highly recommend Ace on the House if you like the Adam Carolla Show. It's basically him and his buddy Ray talking about shit for an hour. They usually do a home improvement phone call or two, but it's usually just them talking about other stuff.

I'd also recommend people check out Uhh Yeah Dude. The two guys are pretty hilarious and one is John Laroquette's son. They take a little while to get into but are great. Couple old clips.

The plan (such as it is anyway) is to have different topics on different days, with no fear about doing wildcard shows. Much like my blog, where I use some set things that are kinda formulaic just to make it easier to keep myself posting on a fairly regular schedule and then go elsewhere if/when I find the urge or the need.

I realize that probably runs against the grain of podcast norms but I'm hoping to have the titles be informative enough to allow people to pick & choose what might interest them with ease, with the notion of being "my three cents on Topic X" being the unifying theme.

Having no illusions about the likely maximum popularity/traffic this would ever generate allows a fair bit of freedom. It's not like I'm gonna have thousands of listeners to piss off by breaking format

Developed from the team at This American Life, and had its first episode run through them (which I'm sure helped get a following) -- this is now a stand-alone podcast. Basically it's a deep look at a "solved" crime from about 15 years ago, sifting through lots of detail and talking to lots of people. For some combination of reasons, I have found it pretty compelling -- the producer has a very engaging presence, and the details of the case are interesting enough to keep my attention. It's well done.

It's about 6 episodes deep so far, I have no seen anything indicating how long they expect this to run. It's being released one per week, on Thursdays.

Worth checking out if this teaser hit any notes with you.

Part 5 actually already yeah, that series has been amazing so far. Have listened to the first 4 episodes twice each (lots of days working over the holidays, one good thing about bringing the mail as a sidejob is that you get to catch up on audio books and podcasts ) and he does a great job keeping a somewhat chronological narrative but also interloping things based on subject matter and going on "sidequests" within the material.

If anybody is interested in a more visual account on the subject, there is an excellent documentary series available that uses a similar narrative format and actually features a ton of the visuals that Carlin recommends taking a look at: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...9D52C080463C76 (10 parts of 1 hour). Has a similar feel to it that the Civil War series by Ken Burns.

a different format i enjoyed a lot recently are a couple BBC series:

A History of the World in 100 Objects: BBC - Podcasts and Downloads - A History of the World in 100 Objects (there´s an accompanying book as well, which i highly recommend)

Germany, memories of a nation: BBC - Podcasts and Downloads - Germany: Memories of a Nation
similar concept, picks up places, objects, events or personalities that play an important role in german national identity. 30 parts of about 15 minutes.

I am listening to the latest Dan Carlin as well.

He's pretty much all I've listened to since August. After running out of the free episodes, I went back and bought a bunch of old episodes: the series on the Punic wars and the Eastern Front of WWII. Both highly recommended.

I'll throw StartUp on here, which is a documentary style look at Alex Blumberg's attempt to launch a podcasting company. You may know Blumberg from NPR, This American Life or Planet Money. He's really an excellent producer, though some of the content here as he steps out of his element and tries to pitch a business plan is really cringe-worthy.

The first season wrapped up in late February and the second season, focusing on a new business will start soon.
