1971 Frederick Tequilas (FOF4)
And so begins the preparation for the 1971 CFA season, following an 8-8 1970 campaign by the Frederick Tequilas. It is time to cement our staff. Coach Graham Leahy is signed for another year, which is a good thing as the 56 year-old coach is strong across the board: Code:
Coach Leahy could be better with young talent, but we very much appreciate his playcalling abilities on both sides of the ball. Our scouting position is open however. Incumbent head scout Skip Chapman, 52, is asking $70k/year for 3 years, which is reasonable. The reason Chapman is this reasonable is that he is average at scouting every position except for the secondary, where his assessment abilities are excellent. Another candidate for the position is Everett Demeester, the young (36) scout previously employed by the Ft. Lauderdale Flamingos. Demeester is VG with Young Talent, Good with RBs, O-Line and DBs, AVG at WR, DL and LB, and fair at QB and K. His starting salary demands are 3 years at $60k per. His only real drawback is his ability to rate QB's, but being VG with young talent is very important in this young league. Renaldo Custer, 48, is another candidate asking $70k. The scout last year for the Ohio Weavers, Custer is VG at assessing QBs, G at LB, DB and YT, AVG at RB, WR and DL, Fair with kickers, and Poor with the O-Line. Ty Gilman, 57, of the Madison Grey Geese is requesting $90k/year, and is EX at scouting RB's, G at K, DL, LB, DB and YT, and AVG with QB, WR and OL. This would be the guy to put together a defense. In the first week of hiring, we decide to put together an offer to Everett Demeester for 3 years at $60k per. It appears we have underestimated the demand for his services, as Ft. Lauderdale has offered 5 years at $90k. Ty Gilman has been offered $160k from Madison, so we will probably not be pursuing him any longer. We up our offer to Demeester to 4 years, $100k per. He opts to stay with FTL. Meanwhile, both Gilman and Custer have re-upped with their teams. At this point, we are the only remaining team with an opening. With this knowledge, we begin to eye another option, 66 year-old Matthew Sells. Sells had been asking $130k, but now seems to have limited options. He is VG with young talent, DBs and DLs, good with kickers, and AVG with QB, RB, WR, OL and LB. At this point he's about the best we can do. We severely low-ball Mr. Sells (we are running a business after all) who works us "up" to $30k. For this price, we ink him to a 4 year deal (with the knowledge that at 66, he may well retire after a year anyway). This gives us the least expensive staffs in both coaching and scouting in the league. We fully expect this to change next year when Coach Leahy's contract is up however.

Scout Change Analysis
Following our change in scouting staff, now is a good time to see what effect, if any, this change has on our player evaluation:
Code:
The major differences in the two scouts are that our old scout was average in everything, but Excellent with the DB's, whereas our new scout is Very Good with young talent (+2 upgrade), DL (+2 upgrade) and DB (-1 downgrade), and G with Kickers (+1 upgrade). The players that took the greatest hits in future ability are RDE Bernie McKnight (-10!), RDE Earnest Matthews (-6), WLB Michael Jordan (-5) and P Hugh Shockley. The hits to the DE's are most interesting, and look to be due to our scout's ability with the DL, and with young talent. He is likely able to see a bust factor that was not seen before for young talent, and this was amplified by his DL ability. This is also large for WLB Jordan, but looks like it is just attributable to hs young talent ability. MLB Harry Swift also is -3, a number that might well be greater if our scout was not average at LB. I find it particularly interesting that the McKnight/Matthews drops have a similar ration to the Jordan/Swift drops, just that those of the DL's are twice as large as those for the LB's. This could indicate a) that there are two "levels" of busting here, and b) my scouts ability at DL is accelerating the unmasking of the player. It is also interesting that the last of the "large" drops is at one of the kicker positions, where my scout is rated good. For all of the positions where he is average and the same as my other scout, there are much smaller drops, usually -1 or -2 (-2 for all QB's). I wonder if this is just due to natural "settling" of a players' abilities, revealed a little faster due to the young talent rating, except for the case of G Harvey Blackshear, who with -3 might also be more of a bust. I'm not sure what to conclude from the DB's, where my scout is a bit weaker than his predecessor (but he's still VG).

I can't BELIEVE you actually OFFERED a position to a former flaming flamingo!! How DARE you perpetuate their vileness, their disgusting philosphy and ideals, their EVIL!!
Be thankful that Divine Intervention kept the nastiness contained in that one franchise and kept the cancer from spreading to other teams in the league!! Go Rhode Island Reds!!! Eat more cow!

Frederick, MD
Frederick is a fantastic town for a football team, a decent sized market with low poverty, a strong income rate and a supportive fan base. Last season Cuervo Field was 94% filled, and the support led to a $6.8M profit for the club. With that in mind, the team increased ticket prices slightly, but overall the prices are among the lowest in the league. The upper deck seats are a bargain at $6, end zone seats will go for $10, 8,800 mezzanine tickets are $12 a pop, the sidelines are $18, and the upscale club seats $50. The 108 luxury boxes have been bumped from $22k to $25k.
City Info: Frederick, MD Population - 2,620,00 Growt- 0.6% Average Income - $35,100 Poverty Level - 10.2% Entertainment Competition - High (70th %) Trend-Setting City - Medium (55th %)

Free Agency
Due to the nature of the league, the quality of the free agent pool this offseason is, well, rather pedestrian. Those players whose contracts are up are generally those who were selected in the 40th round or later, or were undrafted alltogether. Factor in that we can only sign players who are Leo, Sagittarius or Virgo, and the pool is especially shallow. Frederick has 12 players from last years squad that are unsigned: K Butch Sanderson, FB Stanley Curtis, CB Arnie Jochen, RB Fred Frederick, WLB Michael Jordan, SLB Neil Riley, MLB Rick Bradford, LT Alonzo Newhart, DE Terrance Sample, FL Bart Singletary, TD Herman Harvey, and DT Bruce Douglas. Jochen and Jordan were brought in due to injuries, Jordan as a replacement for DL leader Bradford, who was placed on IR in the preseason. Jochen is the current secondary leader and served as a dime back and kick returner. Besides Sanderson, the lone starter of the bunch was LT Newhart, who started the 12 games and missed 4 to injury. He is a decent run blocker but has no pass blocking skills according to our scout. He has no affinities, unlike all of the other players unsigned.
Here are the players current demands: Fred Frederick RB $110,000, 1 yrs. Stanley Curtis FB $110,000, 1 yrs. Herman Harvey TE $110,000, 1 yrs. Bart Singletary FL $1,240,000, 2 yrs. Alonzo Newhart LT $980,000, 3 yrs. Butch Sanderson K $250,000, 2 yrs. Michael Jordan WLB $880,000, 2 yrs. Neil Riley SLB $610,000, 2 yrs. Rick Bradford MLB $110,000, 1 yrs. Arnie Jochen RCB $110,000, 1 yrs. Terrance Sample RDE $110,000, 1 yrs. Bruce Douglas RDT $110,000, 1 yrs. Jordan and Singletary are off their rockers if they think they are getting that kind of money. Both have awfully high views of themselves as backups who were both undrafted. We are $6,190,000 under the cap, and between the draft and FA's we need to spend that money wisely - we will not pursue either at this time. Bradford and Jochen, as position leaders, have been resigned at the minumum and should have every opportunity to make the team. The same goes for Sanderson, who was 20/28 on FG last year, and isn't asking for a bonus. The rest of the bunch isn't worth pursuing until much later in the FA process, possibly even after the draft. Oh yes, and all of the FA in the league are restricted - so there is really no point in offering any contracts above the minumum during this phase anyhow. |

The Draft - Round 1
Looking at the draft pool, it is apparent that the infusion of talent will immediately affect the level of play in the league. Carson City, with the first pick, will have the opportunity to draft an absolute stud of a DT, Chris Lyon out of Georgia Tech, with a grade of 8.4 and an assessment of 60/84 by our staff.
We hold the 12th pick of the draft, and will get a player that will immediately impact our team (as will all 1st rounders league-wide). At our position, players who may be available include LG Burt Wahl, Virginia (Virgo), RG J.T. Glaser, Arizona State (Leo), and hopefully RB Craig James, Clemson (Saggitarius), who is rated 64/71. If none of those three is there, we will look to CB Sherman Frasier, Northwestern (Virgo) or SE Thomas Lane, Missouri (Virgo). 1. Carson City - James, Craig, RB, Clemson 2. Vancouver - Sinclair, Terry, FB, South Dakota State 3. Oklahoma - Fuller, Kurt, DE, Florida State 4. Atlantic City - Lyon, Chris, DT, Georgia Tech 5. Georgia - Stephenson, Greg, QB, James Madison 6. Michigan - Grant, Kirk, WR, West Virginia 7. Wichita - Vance, Lionel, DT, Penn State 8. Iowa - Wahl, Burt, G, Virginia 9. Albany - Montgomery, Marlon, WR, Stanford 10. Rhode Island - Powell, Paul, K, Central Florida 11. Ohio - Sewell, John, QB, Louisville Hmm, both Wahl and James are gone, and Glaser is still available. However, three players who we expected would be gone by now are still on the board. CB Cedric Foley, Fresno State (Leo) is graded 7.0 and scouted at 21/84. He is very green, but has amazing potential. He is a punishing hiter and as a nose for the ball. He is a fan favorite. DT Jake Remington, Arkansas State (Virgo) has a pass rush strengh of 100, hits hard and has a motor that can run all game. Well liked by the fans. He grades at 7.4, and is 45/80. WILB Ian Fulton, Purdue (Virgo) is recognized by the fans, has amazing endurance, has a pass rush strength of 92 and hits as hard as you can hit (100). His only visible weakness is in zone D. 12. Frederick - Fulton, Ian, ILB, Purdue 13. Columbus - Remington, Jake, DT, Arkansas State 14. Sacramento - Crandall, Charles, QB, Washington 15. Joliet - Lane, Thomas, WR, Missouri 16. Lexington (MA) - Aufedenkampe, Mario, QB, North Carolina I wanted to go with Remington, but something in me told me to go with Fulton instead. Just a feeling. We'll be seeing Remington twice a year for a long time, so we'll see what he develops into first hand, for better or worse. Round 2
The next non-specialty players ranked are Sherman Frasier, LCB, Northwestern (Virgo), 22/66; Trevor Shannon, SLB, Iowa (Virgo), 38/62; Karle Wolfe, RG, Pennsylvania (Virgo), 20/59; and Kenny Douglas RCB, Oregon (Leo), 38/56. Nobody is worth trading up for at this point, so we'll see what's available at our pick.
33. Carson City - Wynn, Geoff, DT, Mississippi State 34. Vancouver - Barber, Ellis, K, Ohio State 35. Oklahoma - Wilkerson, Al, T, Oklahoma State 36. Atlantic City - Bradford, Damon, DE, Brigham Young 37. Georgia - Messinna, Sammy, WR, Northwestern 38. Michigan - Clinton, Christian, S, Southern California 39. Wichita - Fabini, Rex, RB, Wofford 40. Ohio - Bednarik, Lewis, K, Georgia None of the players listed above have been selected, and quite honestly there still appear to be many players available that are ranked higher than them but aren't compatible. As such, we will attempt to trade. We dial up Carson City, and trade the 2nd round 12th pick for the 3rd round 1st pick and a 5th round 1st pick. 44. Carson City - Tatum, Lester, WR, Wisconsin 45. The only player on our radar that was taken in the second round was CB Sherman Fraser. At this pick we now can consider other options, and that is where we go, taking the top rated DE left on the board.

Round 5
We hold the first pick in the 5th round, as part of our trade with Carson City. Our scout rates our biggest needs as DT, RB and OT. I would like to pick up a T if available, but again with our unique constraints, we may look for the best player available. No RB's look like much of an improvement over the trio we have, and there aren't any good looking QB's or WR's. TE's are plentiful. Wow, there are absolutely NO viable options at P or K. Strangely, there are many defensive backs still available. We have our eye on a couple of them, but decide to bolster the line. Instead of looking at future potential here, we decide to go for current ability, as this player may only be with us for a couple of years.

It appears that teams are picking for positions that are vacant, without any consideration as to what may be still available in the FA market. 140. Training Camp
This should be an interesting excercise. This is our first official camp, so it will be interesting to see how much the players improve. And believe me, there is plenty of room for improvement. One aspect of our team that may make camp interesting is that we by rule will have no conflics, and thus no bad chemistry. This is one of the benefits of the 'team functions' portion of camp, to reduce bad chemistry. Well, we don't have any. Team functions will still be important for cohesion and loyalty, but we won't focus on this as much as other organizations might.
Camp Schedule: Code:
It appears as though there have been some losses as far as loyalty is concerned, as these values generally changed 0 to -3 points. Cohesion levels for the entire league are still at a maximum, as no teams have really forged much in the way of cohesion. |

Post-Camp Evaluation
Now is the time to reevaluate our roster and update our scouting reports. Going back to Scout Sells' initial scouting report, there were some drops in potential talent between then and the pre camp analysis. Then there were also some changes during the camp. Here are the splits for before free agency, following the draft, and after camp.
Code:
Code:
Things aren't looking so good for Brennan (converted TE), Whalen, Wolfe, Freeman or Gibson. That's a lot of players who don't look like they're going to pan out. Castillo is a pleasant surprise, and Cole shows some promise as well. |

Thanks Admiral! I'm getting back into it after a bit of a pause there during the off-season. The pre-season should begin in the next couple of days, if not tonight.
Hmm, I could use a better 3rd string QB myself... |

Wow, QB Edward Frimodt got in the game after Brett Kenworthy went 0-6, and put up big numbers. Code:
SLB Trevor Shannon had only 1 tackle after a big week last week. CB Darrell Cole had an interception. LDE Matthew Mitchell had a sack, and RDT Randall Walsh and RDE Morris Slade shared another. Brett Kenworthy connected with Ted Henderson (Mr. Big Play) on a 76 yard TD pass. Madison had a big advantage in TOP and offensive plays. The running backs had an off day, particularly Luther Elliot, who hasn't been strong in the preseason. The QB's lines: Code:
Looks like Kenworthy was hot before leaving the game. Terrell was not so hot, and will likely only make the team if we decide to keep an emergency 4th QB. Cutdown Day
Now is the time when the roster must shrink from 60 to 53. It is unfortunate that we have to cut any players, but it is a necessity of the business. Looking back, I almost wish that we didn't extend camp invitations to a few players, because they might have come in handy later in the year in case of injury. But now I am afraid that after we cut them, they will be unwilling to return to the squad. Live and learn.
The Turk has spoken, and he has visited the following gentlemen: SS Wade Lamond RT Malcolm Haag FS O.J. Griffith LDT Lewis Doelle QB Mario Terrell LCB Neal Yonkovit FB Stanley Curtis |

No, I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. Right now I am leaning towards making a csv file based on the league as it stands and importing it into FOF4. The Tequilas will live on (though their coaching staff may not.... )
