Anybody ever work at/for Wawa ?

I've been out of work... Just got hired there as a "fuel manager" in New Jersey..

For those that don't know, it's a chain of convenience stores prominent in the northeast. I've been one of their best customers for years..

Since you never know who is on the Fake Football forums, I thought I'd ask. I didn't get a lot of info when they hired me, so I'd love to hear from someone who works for the company..

I worked there a long time ago as my first job. It was a good job and they treated their employees as well as any of those types of places, but I quickly left when the casinos offered me a much better job.

No. I'm a doctor/physician leader with a local healthcare company now. I last worked for Wawa in 1992 and I haven't done any work for the casinos since 1994. But, back in 1992, they seemed decent to their employees.

Never worked at a WaWa (tried there when I was laid off back in 2002 but they didn't want to hire me as they thought I would just jump ship once I got something back in the computer field).

I do worship at the altar of WaWa... Hate long business trips when I am away from the area and can't get my "WaWa run" fix...

Much better than any 7-11. Very good coffee and some good sandwiches too. Love their free ATM's as well.

I worked for Sheetz, which was kind of similar. Not a high level position. But if it's anything like Sheetz they seemed to focus more on the other stuff more than the fuel.

I assume NJ Wawa's have more focus on the fuel side since its all full-serve.

Worked at a Cumberland Farms back in HS. Those owners have the rep for being the cheapest in the business, and it tracked with my experience. Sounds like Wawa's better.

I had family members work at Cumberland Farms... they were much worse employers than Wawa.

It is, IMO. The sandwiches that you can get at WaWa are significantly better than anything you can get at Sheetz. As someone who lives 5 minutes from a Sheetz and spent about 4 years being ridiculously unhealhty, I've tried pretty much everything they offer. Nothing I've ever had at sheetz is even half as good as WaWa's bagel sandwiches.

Don't get me wrong, they're not great. We're still comparing gas station food. But given say, WaWa vs Subway or Quizno's, I'd go to the WaWa. I'd not say the same for Sheetz.

Privately owned company that operates in the northeast. Is currently purchasing real estate in Florida and planning to operate a lot of stores...

I literally go there 3-4 times a day. Probably less now that I work there. But they feature made to order food, sandwiches mostly... I grabbed a few turkey bowls there the other day for thanksgiving... (Wife was working) Great Soup, salads, blender drinks...

not my "dream job", but the company has a great reputation and work is hard to find these days...

I wouldn't say "gas station" food... Most of the stores don't sell fuel at all. Just the newer ones...

When I bartended in Brick we had a group of wawa managers that came in a lot and they were all happy there. I've heard good things about them. As for ears being better. I have lived in Ohio and PA for a number of years and had ample exposure to both and it really isn't even close.

Ah I didn't realize that. My only exposure to them is to one outside Atlantic City that I would go to nightly when I was up there, that one was tied to a gas station and looked exactly like the Sheetz down here do.

I think certain things at Sheetz are pretty good and I stick to those things. Maybe they're just industry standard but the onion rings and loaded fries are great. I like the pretzel melts.

Echoing the Wawa is literally the greatest convenience store ever. They have absolutely amazing sandwiches (I wonder how in the world Subway, Quiznos, etc. stay in business in areas with Wawas) and good coffee. My gf was being all snobby after hearing the name - the sandwiches changed her mind completely.

As for the upthread Northern QT comparison... QT WISHES it could be half as good as a Wawa. Damn, I miss Wawa.

WaWa has clean shitters, which for a traveller is really the only thing that matters. Gas is gas, soda is soda, a clean toilet is divine.

It is interesting to see how outsiders think of WaWa compared to those of us from the area. To us WaWa isn't a gas station at all.

Lived in New Hampshire my whole life, outside of 4 years in Boston, and can say I don't ever remember seeing a WaWa. Jiffy Mart and Cumby's sure, but not a one WaWa.

Lived in Jersey for a couple years, though it was over a decade ago. Experienced WaWa quite a bit.

Now my QT view is jaded a bit as QT has made a strategic move the last 3 years into SC and built ~100 stores. All are the newest and nicest design. Most have made to order Pizza, hot sandwiches, premium coffee and ice cream bars etc.


Ive traveled through GA and AL and seen the older QTs, and its possible WaWa has totally changed their game in the last 10 years. But in my experiences they are nearly identical.

Wawa is @40% owned by the employees through stock offerings...

The other $60 is owned by a single family and it's descendants..

They have a lot of their own signature brands, (coffee, cold drinks, breakfast sandwiches (sizzle) and hoagies (classic, shorti, or junior) Signature brand of coffee that they sell a lot of. They have touch screen computers where you order your own stuff the way you like it. It prints out a slip and you go to the register and pay while they make it. Meatball sandwiches are killer, too. Currently at 650 stores in NJ, Philly, Va, and Del.. Big expansion into Florida planned

They didn't get into gas until recently, so most of the older stores don't offer fuel. In NJ they don't let people pump gas, so I guess that's what I'll be doing a lot of. I was hoping someone worked there....As a manager, I'm wondering what the administration/gaspumping ratio is...

Betting on lots of gas pumping for someone. The 2 Wawa's closest to my house don't have gas, but there are a couple on/ near Route 18 that do, that always seem to have a line. The Quick Chek across the street from the Wawa near my job usually has a big crowd for gas too (20 pumps).

In NJ, people don't pump their own gas. So there is a whole staff that pumps gas 24/7/365... I am managing that group of people at a store or group of stores scheduling, for sure.. Not sure what else...

Having lived in NJ and learning what a shock to the system this was I wanted to clarify this in case anyone is mis-reading it.

In NJ it is ILLEGAL for anyone to pump their own gas. The state of NJ has determined that gasoline vapor is a strong enough carcinogen such as to be a health risk to residents who may pump gas for 4-6 times per month.

As a result they have ruled that a select number of high schoolers should pump gas for extended periods of time several days a week.

(The last paragraph is, of course, a bit of sarcasm on my part but 100% factually correct)

I just mainly wanted to make sure people didnt somehow think the people of NJ were somehow too good to pump their own fuel.

I remember it nearly led to an altercation when my 21 year old southern ass moved there. I nearly fought a guy who wanted to pump my fuel as I assumed he was just angling for a tip.

Also, btw, it is also illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon. And while NJ's law was based on safety, it wasn't anything to do with carcinogens... the law was passed in the 1940s after all.

In addition, I still stand by my position that QT isn't anywhere near Wawa in quality. It's like comparing McD's to Five Guys, IMO.

Well, I've been working/training now for a week. Since I'll be managing, I've been rotating tasks.. (I haven't even been outside, yet, on the gas court)

Today, I literally made coffee only for 10 hours straight. 20 1 gallon containers in rotation all day long, I made 6 gallons at a time all day long. Not sure what the markup is on coffee, but at 1-2$ a cup they must be making serious cash..

It seems I get a $5000 bonus if someone I recommend gets hired for one of these jobs. Details at Wawa.com, please PM me if you apply so I can get money..
