Does anyone remember an old dos game like this? I'm pretty sure it was out long before Hollywood mogul. I think it was called box office something. I played it in middle school, so about 20 years ago.
It was all text. I remember making movies with sissy spacek and peter o'toole. I played it all the time with karateka and some track and field game. |

In hindsight - it made more than any of my other movies.
Fun game - one thing I didn't like was that my studio seemed to burn through money at an AMAZING clip. Like...$80m a month even when I'm not doing anything. |

Tried out the demo ... couple of observations:
Hollywood Mogul Carey might want to consider contacting an attorney. Unless Carey stole most of the elements for his game, Showtime directly rips off large portions of HM. In a lot of ways it feels like an updated version of HM2 without the depth of HM3. But the way scripts are developed, the ratings and the entire filmmaking process and release are virtual carbon copies of HM. Maybe Carey is working with these folks, but if not expect legal action soon. The differentiating factor from HM is the introduction of technology upgrades. If you start at the right time frame, your studio will be fairly up to date. If you start at the wrong time, you will end up with a studio that is 20-years out of date and requires a $150 million or more to become state of art. The problem with that is that making money is pretty much the same as HM -- get a script, polish it until its 5-stars and then market the heck out of it. But unless you give yourself $250 million in starting cash it's going to be difficult to do that and keep your studio up to date. I released five semi-quick movies in the demo and every single one of them made between $4-5 million like clockwork, which is not good. Fun game but seems like you have to stack the deck in your favor to make it work. |

So the question is...
What better? HM3 or Showtime? |

FYI. I just found this today. Looks like Carey is rebranding HM3.
I loved the original HM and played a ton on my laptop in the old days while traveling for work. I felt like the game never advanced as much as other contemporary games. I would really love to see a well done modern game. Maybe this showtime, or the new HM game will be it. Now all I need is the time I use to have to actually play games like this http://hollywood-mogul.proboards.com...-mogul-branded |

I was always partial to a Mac game called Sim Cinema Deluxe. So much so that I sought out a Mac emulator to play it.

well, so much for that for awhile
FM14 beta released today, with FOF7 right around the corner, I am sure I wont get to any of these games. Maybe in 2014 |

Not to get all thread necromantic up in here, but Showtime is part of the Humble Flash Bundle today.
I'm thinking about giving it a shot. |

I had to give it a go. I loved HM when I was younger.

Likewise. I've been enjoying it so far. The only real gripe I have to this point - and I don't know if it's fixable - is how frequently movie names get reused by the AI/script pitches.
One would think there would be, if nothing else, a sort of Mad Libs title generator to keep that from getting stale, but I've seen the same movie title pop up multiple years in a row. |
