I don't think Jeff George is in the league this year.

Do you mean Charles Woodson? I can't remember hearing Rod Woodson say anything that resembled whining, and I live in an area where the Raiders are covered extensively. |

I don't think Vanderjagt should be on the list. He said something that nearly everyone was thinking. Had it been Marvin Harrison who would have made that statement, the media would have agree with Harrison and said it was about time someone stood up to Manning.
V's biggest problem is the position he plays, I don't consider him a whiner. TroyF |

Has anybody else noticed that Manning seems to be playing with more passion this season?

Cris Carter got a waiver of the 5-year waiting period and was immediately inducted into the whiners' Hall of Fame.

Could be that Manning is just now in his 6th season and finally is surrounded by a decent defense and quality receivers beyong Harrison and Pollard. If you look at his stats from 1999 and 2000 (in just his 2nd and 3rd seasons) this year isn't really much of a leap at all. In the two years inbetween the team gutted the heart of its offensive line, lost the best running back in the NFL to injury, let its receiving corp atrophy to basically one guy, and had a defense that forced the team to score 30+ points to just to have a chance to win!
So yeah.. I guess Vandy's comments are one possible explanation... |

DOLA, I don't think Vanderjagt is a whiner at all. Just an emotional guy who doesn't know his place. I think to be a whiner your comments need to be motivated at least a little by greed or selfishness.

Daimyo,
A better defense? For all the hype about the Colts improved defense, it is actually worse than last years version. Last year the Colts finished 8th in yards per game and 7th in points allowed per game. This year, they fall 17th and 15th in those two respective marks. For all the hype that James gets this year for returning to form, the Colts are averaging 3 yards a game less rushing than last year. Still, I digress. Vanderjagt's comments were not directed at Peyton Manning the statistical entity. Kodos, likewise didn't comment on Peyton and his raw "numbers". If that's what you got out of V's comments (and I think the media is with you for what it's worth), you read them 100% incorrectly. He was talking about Peyton becoming more of a leader on the field. Not just shrugging his shoulders when the Colts lost. Taking it personal, getting pissed and not being afraid to show the rest of the team that side of him. Watching any Colt game this year, you can see Peyton is doing just that. He's emotional. When things start going south, he doesn't bury himself into his shell. This isn't just mine or Kodo's opinion. His teammates have said he's been more of a vocal leader this year. Columnists in Indy have been writing about it sinse training camp. He's not only doing his job this year, he's making other people accountable for their actions on the field. It all started when he bashed V by calling him an idiot, drunk kicker. Nobody had ever seen that side of Manning before. He was pissed and he let it out. He's started to do that more frequently now. If you think that "ididot" kickers comments didn't have a little something to do with that, I think you are wrong. TroyF |

I guess I should have better worded the intent of this team. I'm thinking of guys that are distractions to their team. How about the All "Pop-Off Your Mouth When You Should Shut-up and Play" Team?
I agree that Vanderjagt said what needed to be said, but he did so (IMO) in an inappropriate forum and embarassed his team. Productive in the long run? Sure, you can argue that. Is it what you want to see from a player on your team? Behind closed doors - absolutely. Otherwise, I dunno. Shockey is already legendary for his mouth and talking without thinking. Personally, I am not as down on him as a lot of people are, but he still can be a big distraction to his team. Cris Carter is next in line at the crowded WR slot. Andre Rison might be another candidate. Ray Lewis had off-the-field troubles, but I wouldn't qualify him as a whiner. Did I miss something about Chris Hovan?

As a Colts fan who has watched every game for the last 8 years I think I have a very good view of this Vandy vs Peyton issue.
It's clear to me, that Vandy's comments have made Peyton realize something. That being a team leader also means you can help shape the demeanor of the entire team through your own actions. Watching Peyton this year has had a new feel to it. It's strange, but he's into it more than ever. I believe he always felt this way, but realized he needs to be more outward about it, because the team needs to see that. Lastly, I love Mike Vanderjagt. He basically made Hunter Smith spike the ball when he got the fake FG touchdown. Vanderjagt is the most emotional, involved kicker I've ever seen .. and I love it. I believe when you're the most accurate kicker the league has ever seen ... you may earn a right or two that other kickers don't. Though he may have stretched those rights out a little bit. Romo?
Deion Sanders? Cris Carter? Brian Billick as coach? Simeon Rice (who fired his agent when the agent said that he would be unable to get Rice a 75 mill 3 year contract, because Rice thinks he's that valuable) David Boston? Heck, if he doesn't play because he's a little hurt, Vick. Ryan Leaf -Anxiety

I just read that DT Chris Hovan, for all the hype surrounding the guy, only has 1 sack and 13 tackles through 10 games...

Yeah, I was referring only to his demeanor. You see a little more Marinoish emotion from Manning these days, and I like it.
