IWS #220 The Results
I had some interesting comments, and surprises. I have a couple buddies that enjoy shooting trivia and having these type of sport chats, and wanted to give you guys something to think about. Many of the comments indicated it was a "hard" IWS. Good ! haha. It's fun to exorcise those memory sticks right !
For those wondering why no NHL ? .. Uh, it's not a major sport ! Now, onto the results : 1. The most memorable Super Bowl loser... 17 - 2007 New England Patriots 5 - The Early 90s Buffalo Bills 2 - 2000 Titans 1 - 88 Cincinnati Bengals 1 - 13 Denver Broncos I figured this would be the game breaker, this team was actually the one that made me pose the question. 2. The most memorable World Series loser ... 10 - 1986 Boston Red Sox 4 - 1991 Atlanta Braves 3 - 2011 Texas Rangers 1 - 2012 Detroit Tigers, 1919 Chicago White Sox, 1931 Oakland A's, 1975 Boston Red Sox, 1988 Oakland A's, 1988 L.A. Dodgers, 1993 Philadelphia Phillies, 2001 NY Yankees (and "Cleveland") I thought this one was going to go to the 1919 White Sox, with the movie and all. Then the 86 Red Sox's started pouring in. 3. The most memorable NBA Finals loser ... 6 - 1997 Utah Jazz 5 - 2013 San Antonio Spurs 3 - 2011 Miami Heat 2 - 2004 L.A. Lakers 2 - 1984 L.A. Lakers 2 - 1969 L.A. Lakers 1 - 2006 Dallas Maverics, 1984 Boston Celtics, 1989 Cleveland Cavs, 1994 N.Y. Knicks, 1995 Orlando Magic, 1996 Seattle Supersonics Figured this would be all over the board. Wasn't disappointed. 4. The most memorable NCAA Championship Game (football) loser ... 10 - 2005 USC Trojans 6 - 2003 Miami Hurricanes 3 - 2013 Auburn Tigers 2 - 2007 Oklahoma Sooners 1 -2000 Florida State, 2004 Auburn, 2007 Ohio State, 2011 Oregon, Notre Dame 5. The most memorable season, that didn't reach the championship game. 6 - 2004 Auburn Tigers 3 - 1998 Minnesota Vikings 2 - 2001 Seattle Mariners 2 - 2007 New England Patriots 2 - 1991 UNLV Runnin Rebels 1 - 0-16 Lions, 2011 GB Packers, 2012 Denver Broncos, 2014 Wichita State, 1994 Montreal Expos, 1959 Ole Miss, 1980 Portland Trail Blazers, 1994 NY Knicks, ** Alabama, ** Cardinals, 1980 USSR It didn't enter my mind until I seen it come in, but the 1980 Russians were a great entry. 6. Individual MVP Award (Memorable season robbed of an MVP) 10 - 2012 Mike Trout 4 - 1997 Michael Jordan 4 - Triple Crown Ted 3 - 1998 Mark McGuire 1 - 2005 Kobe Bryant, 2006 Lebron James, 2009 Drew Brees, 1999 Pedro Martinez, Peyton Manning Seriously guys, a question clearly pointed at giving you a chance to answer "Trout" & 16 of 26 drop the ball ? What's up with that ? Final Scores : THANKS FOR PLAYING Code:

I mixed up 'most memorable loser' with 'best team to lose'. That '86 Sox team had no business upsetting those Mets in all reality.

Dang, I was doing great until the last two questions. I'm a little surprised how dominant football was for #5. UNLV was the first team that came to my mind when I saw the topic of this IWS, so I had to use them for #5.

Aagh, 2rd place. Figured stupid wouldn't have the long term memory of the '86 Sox.

I'll take hitting 4/6 second-place answers as a sign that I'm appropriately matched for this particular IWS.

I knew #5 would be my downfall. I went with the 1980 Portland Trail Blazers due to Breaks of the Game, but I didn't hold out much hope. Had I thought of the 1998 Vikings, that would have been my answer (though still not the winning one).
And my hat is tipped to whomever came up with 1980 USSR Hockey for that. You only got one point, but I LOVE that answer. |
