since gas stations around here charge 3%-5% more for credit card purchases, I usually pay for gas with cash. the 1% cc cash back isn't enough incentive.

I basically carry around an "emergency $20" but that's all the cash I ever have unless it's something odd (pay with card for multiple people, get cash back- that sort of thing). I keep another bit of cash hidden in my car for parking, tolls, emergencies, etc- but it's never more than $50. I use card for everything and get reward points. The points from regular spending and signup bonuses paid for a big chunk of our trip to Russia last year. It was really nice when we could pay for our apartment with cc but then they put a $20 fee on it so we stopped.

We don't have a lot of credit card fees on gas here yet but I'm sure it's coming. It's easy price discrimination to get back card fees. A lot of people will forego your service if you don't take CC but if you just charge them 1-2% to make up the difference, I doubt you'd lose a ton of customers because most people don't think of that as a lot of money even though it can add up.

where is this shitty place?

I buy like 13-15K worth of gas per year, I'd def carry more cash if I could actually save money by using it.

I keep what I term "hole money" pigeon holed away in my wallet. hidden behind stuff.

Usually ~500 occasionally it will build up higher and ill stick some in the bank.

But in spending money about $220 currently.

I really like cash and frequently find my self in places that (Still) dont take credit cards...so I keep some green near by. And it has served me well to run up on a random deal or need to get a tow and having a driver do it for $50 cash or $200 on a ticket etc.

6000 Costa Rican colones

I'm ready for anything.

This thread made me think of this Mitch Hedberg bit:

This product that was on TV was available for four easy payments of $19.95. I would like a product that was available for three easy payments and one fucking complicated payment. We can't tell you which payment it is, but one of these payments is going to be a bitch. The mailman will get shot to death, the envelope will not seal, and the stamp will be in the wrong denomination. Good luck fucker. The last payment must be made in wampum!

R.I.P. Mitch.
