You All Are a Bunch of Neanderthals

Literally! A pretty remarkable find by these scientists that may help prove that we interbred with neanderthals. What was most fascinating to me is that there is a signifigant difference in the amount of neanderthal in us depending on if we are from Africa or not.

And a more thorough analysis of it from one of my favorite blogs.

I bet neanderthals were considered slutty back in the day. They had lower expectations, you didn't have to buy them dinner and stuff. Kind of like Florida St. grads today.

They did. Neanderthals came out of Africa too. Just in an earlier wave.

Interesting find. We've always known there was a significant overlap as far as time, but the question has always been whether there was interaction between the two types of humanoids or whether Neanderthals kept away.

Of course, knowing human beings it was probably Neanderthal women being raped.

Well if it were the men being raped none of us would be here now would we?

Probably not. Rape is not advantageous from an evolutionary standpoint in our species. It takes place in society, but is more likely a side effect of other genes that are beneficial to us. Rape isn't about reproduction, it's about power.

Similar to how schizophrenia has tagged along for the ride on positive genes that enhance speech and communication. Evolution can be a bit messy, and bad things get attached to good things at times.

Pretty interesting stuff.

DNA Study Shows Why Neanderthals, Modern Humans Are So Different
Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) - How can creatures as different in body and mind as present-day humans and their extinct Neanderthal cousins be 99.84 percent identical genetically?

Four years after scientists discovered that the two species' genomes differ by a fraction of a percent, geneticists said on Thursday they have an explanation: the cellular equivalent of "on"/"off" switches that determine whether DNA is activated or not.

Hundreds of Neanderthals' genes were turned off while the identical genes in today's humans are turned on, the international team announced in a paper published online in Science. They also found that hundreds of other genes were turned on in Neanderthals, but are off in people living today.
