Andy Kaufman Lives?

So news breaks tonight that supposedly Monday night, at the 9th Annual Kaufman Awards event in NY, a woman goes on stage, and claims to be his daughter. She goes on to say that he is alive and well and he was going to show last night, but backed out at the last minute.

Andy Kaufman's brother also says that earlier in the day he had been given a letter by a stranger that was from Andy saying why he had done what he had done.

It's a wierd tale, but supposedly the club owners and others involved say that the evening was not scripted or a hoax. What went down was genuine. TMZ picked it up and followed up the story with some more info.

As for the evidence, here's what we found:

1. When you look up Andy on the Internet database of record, there is no date of death listed.

2. In 2001, the database shows Andy lived in Cook County, Illinois.

3. There's another address indicating he lived in Westchester County, NY later in 2001

So he elaborately faked his own death, but is nice enough to continually update his whereabouts on the "Internet database of record".

Sounds like the smoking gun claims to have evidence that the "daughter" is an actress from NYC... oops.

Yes, this. This sort of mind-fuck thing was Andy's bag. Of course they would fake all of this.

If Kaufman had come back in, say, 1994, that would have been huge news for months.

If he comes back tomorrow, it will trend on twitter for, like, two days and be surpassed by something Kanye or Lady Gaga did within a week. Our pop culture machine does not have the attention span for mega-long pranks.
