It's official. BNN writers have voted Jack Caldwell of the Napa Valley Winemakers the Continental League Batter of the Month award for April.

During the month he recorded a .358 average with 7 home runs, 14 RBIs and 16 runs scored.


RL Honors Casillas, #1 Batter in April

Sergio Casillas is on a tear! After posting a .413 average in April, the Hartford left fielder took home the Republic League Batter of the Month award handed out earlier today.

He cracked 43 hits with 3 home runs and 18 RBIs and scored 24 runs. The 24-year-old also collected 10 free passes and posted a .470 on-base percentage.

Assassins Starter Wins CL Pitching Award

Dwayne Pickwell's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 5-0 in April, the 32-year-old Apex hurler has been named Continental League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 16 in 37.1 innings, logged an ERA of 2.17 and allowed opponents to hit .184 against him.


RL Pitcher of the Month Goes to Ortíz

Veteran Orlando Ortíz put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Omaha Bees, earning himself the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

Ortíz racked up a 4-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 2.25 ERA over 40 innings and striking out 7.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Lense Aarsse earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Continental League for last month's performance. The boyish Napa Valley left fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Aarsse hit .324 with 5 home runs, 17 RBIs and 15 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Alfredo Rodríguez's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Tokyo left fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .339 with 7 doubles, 1 triple and 1 home run. Rodríguez also scored 16 times and drove in 11 runs.

Caldwell Top Hitter in CL in May

Napa Valley center fielder Jack Caldwell was certainly bad news for pitchers in the month of May. He wore them out going 32 for 112 and was rewarded with the Continental League Batter of the Month award.

He hit .286 with 14 home runs, 29 RBIs and scored 20 runs.

This season Caldwell is hitting .321 with 21 home runs.


Mitchell Crowned Top RL Hitter in May

Nathan Mitchell got another reason to celebrate today as he followed up a great month of May at the plate by winning the Republic League Batter of the Month Award.

During the month, the Montreal center fielder hit .376 with 11 home runs, 32 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

This year Mitchell is batting .330 with 16 home runs and 45 RBIs.

May's Top Starter Named in CL

In May Brooklyn starter, Rodrigo Rivera really put the strong arm on the other Continental League teams and hauled in the Pitcher of the Month trophy. He did it with an impressive 5 wins and 1 loss.

In 6 starts and 40 innings of work, Rivera limited opposing batters to 28 base hits and a .196 batting average. He fanned 31, issued 7 walks and had a 1.35 ERA.

Currently Rivera has a record of 9-2 with 57 strikeouts and 10 walks in 71 innings and a 2.15 ERA.


Ríos Wins RL Top Pitcher Award

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Juan Ríos still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 31-year-old starter for Ann Arbor was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 5 wins and no losses with 27 strikeouts in his 5 starts, putting up a fine 3.05 ERA in 38.1 innings of work.

Ríos has made 11 starts this season, posting 8 wins and 2 losses. Opposing clubs are batting .215 against him and he has 60 strikeouts in 83.1 innings with a 2.92 ERA.

Brooklyn's Lester CL Rookie of Month

Youngster Joe Lester emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Brooklyn deserved the honor, batting .381 with 7 home runs and 14 runs batted in. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Lester enjoy the limelight.

In 49 games this season Lester is batting .344 with 55 hits and 8 home runs. He has scored 25 runs and driven in 22.


Rookie Honored by Republic League

Alfredo Rodríguez is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Republic League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In May the Tokyo hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .325 average with 39 hits, no home runs and 17 RBIs.

Rodríguez is currently batting .332 with 1 home run, 28 RBIs and 26 runs scored. He has 77 hits in 232 at-bats.

CL Honors Mason, Best Hitter in June

It was a successful month for Tim Mason of Cleveland. He won the Continental League Best Batter Trophy for June.

Mason batted .294 average, hit 10 home runs, drove in 27 runs, scored 25 times and compiled a .369 on-base percentage.

Currently Mason has 21 home runs and a .292 batting average.


Ruíz Wins RL Prize, Named Best Hitter in June

Raúl Ruíz battered Republic League pitchers all June and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 27-year-old Ruíz told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 27 games, Ruíz hit .346 with 7 home runs, 26 RBIs and scored 20 runs.

This year Ruíz has hit at a .282 pace and produced 65 RBIs, 16 home runs and scored 49 runs.

Turnock Is June's Best CL Hurler

It was a monstrous June for the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award winner, Micah Turnock of the Baltimore Gothams. He put up some mighty scary numbers.

Turnock recorded 3 wins and 1 loss in 6 starts. Throwing a total of 42 innings, he yielded 27 hits, mowed down 26 on strikes, gave up 3 walks and put up a solid ERA of 0.86 in a stellar month on the mound.

This year Turnock has a 6-5 record with a 2.85 ERA.



June's Starter of the Month Goes to Enríquez

The premier pitcher this past month in the Republic League was Mario Enríquez of the Toronto Marlboros. He was one mighty tough pitcher, finishing June with a sensational 5-0 record and a 1.62 ERA.

The Marlboros star made 6 starts and surrendered 28 hits in 39 innings. He struck out 37 and walked 8.

This year Enríquez has 11 wins and 3 losses and a 3.03 ERA.

Baltimore Newcomer June's Best Rookie

A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Juan Guichardo just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for June.

Over the past month the 24-year-old shortstop for Baltimore hit .344 with 32 hits, no home runs and 14 runs batted in. He also logged 13 walks and compiled a .426 on-base percentage.

For the season Guichardo is hitting .253, batted in 26 runs with no home runs and 26 runs scored.

Alfredo Rodríguez certainly made his presence felt in the Republic League in June. The gifted left fielder for Tokyo ripped opposing pitchers for a .374 batting average and was the top votegetter for the Rookie of the Month trophy.

This season Rodríguez is batting .346 with 120 hits and 3 home runs. He has scored 46 times and has 50 RBI.

Gómez Snags CL Batting Honor in July

On the heels of a very productive July, Fabián Gómez received Continental League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested shortstop hit .394 for the Noblesville Millers and racked up 6 home runs, 23 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

Gómez is hitting .302 so far this season with 76 RBIs and 58 runs scored. He has 129 hits including 22 home runs, 36 walks and .369 OBP.

The Napa Valley starter sparkled last month with a 4-1 record and 1.45 ERA. He made 5 starts, tossed 37.1 innings and had 25 strikeouts.

This season in 26 starts Esteban Yan has a record of 11-7 with 114 strikeouts in 171.2 innings and a 2.31 ERA.

Rivelino Piane was the anchor in the Colorado bullpen last month and snatched up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors for July. The 30-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 14.1 innings over 13 relief appearances and collected a 2-0 record with 19 strikeouts and 8 saves while etching his 0.00 ERA.

For the year Piane has 22 saves in 45 relief appearances with a 3-1 mark and 1.20 ERA.

Lachance Earns CL Rookie of Month

Swinging a hot stick in July, Marco Lachance picked up the Continental League Rookie of the Month Award today.

The 26-year-old right fielder for Noblesville lashed 17 hits as he put together a .395 average with 3 home runs. He also drove in 13 runs, scored 11 times and drew 5 walks on his way to a .471 OBP.

This year Lachance is hitting .285, produced 34 RBIs and 12 home runs, scored 29 times and gotten on base at a .357 rate.

Napa Valley's Hill Acclaimed Best CL Hitter

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 26-year-old Joe Hill put together a solid offensive month for Napa Valley and was crowned August's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .286 with 14 home runs, 22 RBIs and 23 runs scored.



So far this year Hill is batting .257 with 41 home runs.

Henry Hicks is the latest Continental League Pitcher of the Month award winner. The Apex starter shined on the hill time and again last month and finished August with a sparkling 4-0 record.

In 6 starts he tossed 43.1 innings, posted 34 strikeouts, and put up a 1.66 ERA.

For the season Hicks has compiled a 12-6 record with a 2.88 ERA.


Ann Arbor Relief Star Selected Best Pitcher

At Andrés Castillo's age, not many pitchers can still get the job done. But he can still throw the ball. The 39-year-old reliever for Ann Arbor was selected the Republic League Pitcher of the Month for August earlier today -- not only satisfying himself, but silencing critics who said he has lost too much to compete at this level.

The old man definitely still has it, making 13 relief appearances and throwing 16.2 innings as he chalked up 8 saves, 18 strikeouts, and a fine 2.16 ERA and a 2-1 mark.

This season Castillo has made 63 relief appearances, recorded 34 saves and compiled a 5-4 won-lost mark and a 3.24 ERA. In pitching 75 innings, he has totaled 75 strikeouts and 9 walks.

Joe Lester had a very good August and today was presented the Continental League Rookie of the Month trophy.

Last month the 25-year-old Brooklyn center fielder played in 26 games and hit .333 with 3 doubles, no triples and 4 home runs. Lester also scored 12 times and drove in 12 runs.

Lester currently has a .299 batting average with 120 hits, 16 homers, 48 RBIs, 56 runs scored and a .370 OBP.

Well that explains it. 2nd in runs scored, 1st in starters ERA, 8th in bullpen ERA. I knew I left the bullpen a little weak but not that weak.

It's funny, I guess I ended up about where I thought I would end up, but it took a good run in the last month to even get within 10 games under .500 (finished eight under). Even so, I had thought before the season that I would do better, but now that I think of it, I am not sure why. My outfield defense took a big hit. I was starting worthless defensive options at first and third base. I let my top three relievers go and did almost nothing to replace them. And my former MVP C/3B Oscar Edwards is falling apart so fast that I actually had to make him just a part time player behind the plate--and that's behind another longtime Hooligan, C Arthur Jones, who himself is falling apart and was never particularly great to begin with.

Oh well, I have some youth in place and a lot of cap space to play with this offseason, and I still have Lucero.

Thank you, we'll need it. Offense was horrible this year. We reached he playoffs on our pitching. If you score 3 runs a game, you should win. I'm hoping to improve off of last years showing, and win just 1 game!
