CL's Best Batter Picked

Melvin McMonegal picked up the top batter prize in the Continental League for April.

The Oshawa left fielder hit .402 with 6 home runs, 14 RBIs and 16 runs scored. He also drew 10 walks to post an OBP of .479.


Hernández Wins RL Batter of the Month

Francisco Hernández battered Republic League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 31-year-old Hernández told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 22 games, Hernández hit .365 with 4 home runs, 23 RBIs and scored 17 runs.

Washington Starter April's Best Pitcher

Veteran Narihira Oshima put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Washington Freedom, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Oshima racked up a 4-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 2.45 ERA over 33 innings and striking out 26.

Carlos Morales's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-1 in April, the 34-year-old Waikiki hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 39 in 33 innings, logged an ERA of 2.18 and allowed opponents to hit .197 against him.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month

Christovão Alpedrinha is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest Continental League Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers.

In April the St Louis hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .296 average with 21 hits, 3 home runs and 11 RBIs.


RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

Youngster Ed Meyer emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Portland deserved the honor, batting .235 with 8 home runs and 20 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Meyer enjoy the limelight.

CL's Top Hitter Named

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 31-year-old Jeff Duncan put together a solid offensive month for Manchester and was crowned May's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .360 with 7 home runs, 17 RBIs and 17 runs scored.



This season Duncan is batting .276 with 11 home runs. He has scored 21 runs and driven in 23.


Great May Gets Grafals RL Best Hitter Award

To survive in the bigs, you've got to be a scrapper like José Grafals. It never pays to take a day off from the batting cages or to shrug off the advice of the hitting coach. It all paid off today as Spring's left fielder pinned down the Republic League Batter of the Month trophy today.

He hit .364 in May collecting 9 home runs, 20 RBIs and 23 runs scored.

This year Grafals has hit at a .343 clip with 68 hits, 14 home runs, 33 RBIs and 41 runs scored.

Costello CL Winner, Top Hurler in May

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, António Costello still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 32-year-old starter for Oshawa was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and no losses with 34 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 2.95 ERA in 42.2 innings of work.

To this point in the season, Costello shows a 7-0 record, 10 starts, 71.1 innings, 58 strikeouts and a 2.40 ERA.


Axemen Starter Named May's Premier Pitcher

Ma-huan Mah has made fans throughout FOOL-X take notice over the past month with an exceptional 5-0 record. No pitcher in the Republic League threw better in May, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today.

In 5 starts Mah compiled a 1.78 ERA, putting up a 5-0 record, striking out 11 and tossing 35.1 innings.

This season Mah has gone 5-3 with an ERA of 4.56, posting 19 strikeouts in 53.1 innings.

Rookie Wiz Gets May Award in CL

José Ramos's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Manchester shortstop has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .293 with 4 doubles, 2 triples and 1 home run. Ramos also scored 18 times and drove in 9 runs.

To date this year Ramos is batting .234 with 1 home run.

Hitting .314 to date, Dickerson has 5 home runs and 21 RBIs. He has played in 46 games.

Gabriel López got another reason to celebrate today as he followed up a great month of June at the plate by winning the Continental League Batter of the Month Award.

During the month, the Omaha right fielder hit .364 with 5 home runs, 30 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

López is presently hitting at a .341 pace with 8 home runs, 70 RBIs and has scored 51 times.

Johnson Wins CL Top Pitcher Award

The Pitcher of the Month Award in June has been selected and the Continental League honor went to London hurler, Jeff Johnson. For his excellent performance he has been named the league's top pitcher.

During the month, Johnson was superb with a 1.66 ERA and 5 wins and no losses. In 38 innings he struck out 20 and gave up 37 hits and 4 walks.

This year Johnson has compiled a 7-5 mark with a 2.18 ERA in 16 starts.


Santos Best RL Starter in June

There was nobody finer on the mound in June and Andrés Santos cruised to the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award today.

He was 4-1 with a 2.08 ERA while piling up 35 strikeouts in 39 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .188 batting average.

Checking out his stats for the year, Santos has racked up 7 wins and 4 losses in 16 starts, 2.67 ERA and struck out 106 batters in 104.1 innings.

Rookie Hunter Named Best in June

July's Premier Batter Announced

Juan Atilano had quite a month with the bat in July and the Oshawa third baseman was crowned Continental League Batter of the Month for his outstanding efforts.

To win the honor, he batted .360 with 32 hits, 3 home runs, 23 RBIs and 19 runs scored. He also drew 9 walks to post a .420 on-base percentage.

Atilano is currently batting .272 with 12 home runs and 73 RBIs.


Árias Snags RL Batting Honor in July

Though his face is weathered and his hands are calloused, Javier Árias can still get it done in FOOL-X. In fact, the 33-year-old second baseman for Ann Arbor was named the Republic League Batter of the Month today after putting up an impressive performance at the plate.

In July he batted .354 with 5 home runs, 27 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

This season Árias is batting at a .306 clip with 19 home runs and 89 RBIs.

In July Plantana starter Raúl García confused hitters all month long. Last month's Continental League Pitcher of the Month took home the trophy as he collected a 4-0 record in 5 starts.

The 29-year-old García added 24 strikeouts in 35.1 innings and 5 walks to his season record and compiled a 1.53 ERA. Other clubs hit .194 against him.

This season in 21 starts Raúl García has a record of 8-6 with 88 strikeouts in 129 innings and a 3.77 ERA.

Torrid August Gets McMillan CL #1 Batter Trophy

The premier pitcher this past month in the Continental League was Ismael Rivera of the Omaha Bees. He was one mighty tough pitcher, finishing August with a sensational 5-1 record and a 1.82 ERA.

His record this season is 11-8 in 26 starts and Rivera has a 3.75 ERA.

Omaha's Arévalo Snags September Batting Title

His solid numbers speak for themselves. That's why Cris Arévalo of the Omaha Bees was named the Continental League's best batter in September.

The Omaha second baseman starred with a .267 batting average, 7 home runs and 25 RBIs.

Arévalo is hitting .291 in 2110 with 121 RBIs and 32 home runs.


Spring's Grafals Collects September Batting Honor

On the heels of a very productive September, José Grafals received Republic League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested left fielder hit .339 for the Spring Lions and racked up 9 home runs, 18 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

On the year Grafals is hitting .295 with 185 hits, 45 home runs, 101 RBIs, .372 OBP and has scored 114 runs.

Continental League Names #1 Pitcher in September

Chris Catron has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in September and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Freedom bullpen ace collected 6 saves and 20 strikeouts in 12.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .116 average and posting a 0.71 ERA and a 2-0 record.

This year Catron has 44 saves. In 71 relief appearances he has tossed 74.2 innings, fanned 94 and given up 11 walks with a 5-5 record. The Washington reliever has recorded a 1.69 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .185 when he is on the mound.


Holden Earns September's Best Pitcher Honor

Raymond Holden was on top of the world in September, capping it off with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors.

The Maricopa starter was superb in 5 starts with 4 wins and 1 loss, 44.1 innings pitched, 36 strikeouts and a fine 1.62 ERA.

This year Holden has 12 wins and 10 losses and a 3.69 ERA.

Top CL Rookie of the Month Named

With September's Continental League Rookie of the Month title slung over his shoulder, Noah Hunter has no reason to be modest about his statistical output. But he was, telling BNN reporters, "I just put the bat on the ball a lot and a lot of them fell in. It was just my month to shine."

The 24-year-old blistered the baseball last month as he posted a .342 batting average, 26 hits, no home runs, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

So far in 2110 Hunter is batting .321 with 2 home runs, 44 RBIs and 55 runs scored. He has 134 hits in 418 at-bats and a .343 OBP.


Maxwell Gets RL Rookie of Month Honors

John Maxwell proved to be one of the Republic League's preeminent rookies last month, putting up some sensational numbers to take the Rookie of the Month trophy.

In September the second baseman for Spring had a .301 average, stroked 37 hits, 2 home runs, drove in 10 runs and drew 3 walks for a .317 OBP.

Currently Maxwell is batting .271 with 3 home runs, 47 RBIs and 94 runs scored.

I'm not terribly shocked, because I always felt the offense was a couple key bats away, and I was leaking quality pitching to the rest of the league because I couldn't afford to keep them. Even so, I thought we would be better than this. Hopefully a salary or two will clear out and I can add some quality back into the system if I go into a short funk.
