Prospective free agents love to have hot streaks and Jesús Morales is no exception. The London right fielder capped off a fine month by hauling in Batter of the Month honors in the Continental League.

In April Morales hit .402 with 6 home runs, 20 RBIs and 25 runs scored.


Wells Takes Best Bat Trophy in April

April's Batter of the Month has been announced by the Republic League. This month's trophy was presented to the Maricopa first baseman, Keith Wells.

He starred by hitting .390 with a .453 on-base percentage, totaled 41 hits in 105 at-bats, 9 home runs, 29 RBIs and scored 22 runs.

Oshima Grabs CL Top Pitcher Trophy

Veteran Narihira Oshima put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Washington Freedom, earning himself the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

Oshima racked up a 3-1 record in 6 starts, posting a 1.73 ERA over 36.1 innings and striking out 33.

Dave Nicholas took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award for April.

The 25-year-old Beach Boys starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 4-0 won-lost record in 5 starts. This month he fanned 11 batters in 39.2 innings and compiled a 2.27 ERA.

CL Selects Rookie Star of the Month

A veritable toddler to the Continental League, Mario González just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for April.

Over the past month the 22-year-old center fielder for Oshawa hit .321 with 26 hits, no home runs and 4 RBI. He also logged 2 walks and compiled a .345 on-base percentage.

CL's #1 Batter Announced

Omaha's Cris Arévalo had a productive May and topped it off by winning the Batter of the Month citation from the Continental League.

The 26-year-old second baseman stood out at the plate with a .358 batting average, 6 home runs, 26 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

Arévalo is hitting .291 this year with 10 home runs and 39 RBIs. He also has an OBP of .414, 42 walks and scored 40 times.


Bafana Takes RL's Best Bat Trophy

Enrique Bafana battered Republic League pitchers all May and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around FOOL-X long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 27-year-old Bafana told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 28 games, Bafana hit .346 with 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and scored 23 runs.

Bafana on the season is batting .338 with 7 home runs. His totals include 34 RBIs and 42 runs scored. He has played in 56 games.

Martínez Nets CL #1 Pitcher Award

Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Juan Martínez still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 29-year-old starter for Omaha was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 5 wins and no losses with 27 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.26 ERA in 43 innings of work.

Presently Martínez has a 7-1 mark in 11 starts with a 2.76 ERA. He has given up 62 hits in 71.2 innings, struck out 51 and issued 21 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .233 batting average against him.


Las Vegas Starter Named RL's Top Pitcher

Ronald Harris's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in May, the 30-year-old Las Vegas hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 25 in 39.1 innings, logged an ERA of 2.06 and allowed opponents to hit .238 against him.

His record this season is 6-1 in 10 starts and Harris has a 2.69 ERA.

González Snags Rookie of Month Trophy

Mario González's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Oshawa center fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .316 with 12 doubles, 2 triples and no home runs. González also scored 16 times and drove in 12 runs.

In his season totals González has no home runs and a .318 batting average.

Waikiki's Norberto Ruíz was voted May's Republic League Rookie of the Month by baseball officials after putting together a fine month-long performance.

The 26-year-old right fielder really attacked the baseball, putting up 34 hits, 2 home runs, 15 RBIs and a .324 average while playing in 29 games.

This year Ruíz is hitting .367 with 72 hits, 3 home runs, 28 RBIs and has scored 29 runs.

Weston of Washington CL Batter of the Month

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 30-year-old Max Weston put together a solid offensive month for Washington and was crowned June's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .317 with 10 home runs, 23 RBIs and 22 runs scored.



For the season Weston has hit .276 with 17 home runs and 59 RBIs. He has played in 83 games and scored 52 times.


Enrique Bafana Named Best RL Batter in June

The Republic League Batter of the Month has been picked for June and the honor goes to the Maricopa Rattlers Enrique Bafana.

He compiled a .336 batting average with 37 hits and 6 home runs, along with 28 RBIs and 18 runs scored.

Looking at his season stats, Bafana has compiled a .337 batting average and a .384 on-base percentage, while hitting 13 home runs and driving in 62 runs.

Joe Peterson of the Omaha Bees outdistanced his peers on the mound this month. He fashioned a fine 3-1 won-lost mark and 1.72 ERA in 6 starts to get the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors.

Peterson had a very impressive June, finishing with 16 strikeouts in 47 innings and holding opposing hitters to a .227 average.

Youngster Mike Clark emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from London deserved the honor, batting .276 with 1 home run and 13 runs batted in. Is the month of June a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Clark enjoy the limelight.

This season Clark is batting at a .262 clip with 2 home runs and 31 RBIs.


New York's Costello RL Rookie of Month

José Costello earned June's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish New York center fielder might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Costello hit .286 with 2 home runs, 17 RBIs and 12 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Thus far this season Costello has hit .273 with 6 home runs, 35 RBIs and scored 35 times.

The Continental League All-Stars versus the Republic League All-Stars. It happens every year halfway through the season. It's a baseball spectacle for the fans and the players alike. Super Month Nets McMonegal #1 Batter Prize in CL

July's Batter of the Month has been chosen by the Continental League. This month's trophy was awarded to the Oshawa left fielder, Melvin McMonegal.

He starred by hitting .389 with a .434 on-base percentage, totaled 35 hits in 90 at-bats, 3 home runs, 21 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

McMonegal is presently batting .331 with 9 home runs, 65 runs scored and 50 RBIs. His OBP is .397.


Barrera July's Best Bat Choice

Jorge Barrera of the Cleveland Naps was named the Republic League's best batter for his fine performance in July.

He compiled a .404 batting average and .465 on-base percentage during the month. In 24 games he piled up 36 hits, 2 home runs, 16 RBIs and 19 runs scored.

This season Barrera has banged out 111 hits in 372 at-bats for a .298 average with 2 home runs. He is getting on base at a .365 pace and his totals also include 51 RBIs and 41 runs scored.

Reliever July's Best Hurler in CL

Chris Catron is at the zenith of his career and today he was selected as the Continental League Pitcher of the Month for July.

He made 13 relief appearances for Washington last month, throwing 13 innings and collecting 9 saves, a 2-0 record, 16 strikeouts and a 1.38 ERA.

This season Catron has 26 saves. In 44 relief appearances he has tossed 45.1 innings, struck out 71 and issued 8 walks with a 3-3 record. The Washington reliever has recorded a 1.99 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .229 when he is in the game.


July's RL Top Pitcher is Wolverines Piña

Pablo Piña has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in July and stole away with the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Wolverines bullpen ace collected 8 saves and 15 strikeouts in 16.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .197 average and posting a 0.54 ERA and a 3-0 record.

This year in 56 relief appearances, Piña has collected 22 saves while posting an ERA of 1.27 and 59 strikeouts in 64 innings. His totals for the year also include 6 wins and 6 losses.

One of the Continental League's brightest newcomers, Jorge Castro was at the head of his class in July as he picked up the Rookie of the Month honors.

The 26-year-old Havana second baseman batted .372 with no home runs and 3 RBIs.

This season Castro is hitting .300 with 4 home runs.


High on the Hit Parade, Costello Voted #1 Rookie

The Republic League made the official announcement today. The Rookie of the Month trophy went to José Costello of New York. He was singled out as the premier rookie in July.

Last month the 23-year-old Legends center fielder played in 27 games and hit .333 with 5 doubles, 3 triples and 1 home run. Costello also scored 18 times and drove in 15 runs.

This year Costello is hitting .289 with 7 home runs and 50 RBIs in 107 games played. He also boasts an OBP of .346 with 32 walks and 53 runs scored.

CL Honors Duncan, #1 Batter in August

Jeff Duncan was declared the Continental League Batter of the Month today. Manchester's center fielder stroked 33 hits in 95 at-bats for a .347 average in August.

He also hit 11 home runs, drove in 26 and scored 22 runs.

For the year Duncan is hitting .258 with 21 home runs. His stats include 77 RBI and 58 runs scored.


Grafals Picks Up Best RL Batter Honors for August

Spring Lions 31-year-old left fielder José Grafals hit his way to a .337 batting average and the Republic League Batter of the Month award in August.

The Pitcher of the Month Award has been announced and the Continental League winner is Omaha hurler, Iván López. For his standout performances in August he has been named the league's best pitcher.

During the month, López excelled with a 2.98 ERA and 5 wins and 1 loss. In 42.1 innings he struck out 40 and gave up 31 hits and 7 walks.

This season López has compiled a 13-11 mark, 4.75 ERA and made 27 starts.


New York Starter Named RL's Best Pitcher

When Jorge Torres took the hill in August, he was in charge. The New York starter never let the Republic League batters get a foothold against him. For his peerless performance, he came away with an impressive 5-0 record and the Pitcher of the Month award.

The talented Legends hurler made 5 starts, worked 35.2 innings, permitted 32 base hits, and struck out 18 while putting up a 3.53 ERA.

To date this season Torres sports a 16-7 mark with a 3.63 ERA in 26 starting assignments. He has held the opposition to a .262 batting average and has 124 strikeouts in 183.2 innings.

Best Continental League Newcomer Named

A rookie, Mike Clark is turning heads around the Continental League, especially since he just netted August's Rookie of the Month trophy.

The London second baseman batted .354 last month and collected 35 hits, 2 home runs, 11 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

This could be the first of many such awards if he continues this torrid hitting, but he's definitely put himself in a good position to claim the Kien-lung Teng Award later this year.

Clark has collected 124 hits for the Bishops this year, 4 of them home runs. He has also netted 44 RBIs and scored 69 runs while batting .281.
