No, it's not about one thing that someone could be offended by. It's about casually using racial slurs. I'll give you that people who casually throw around racial slurs shouldn't judge other people that do.

And as for the idea that he has to do something, most racists don't do anything. Does he need to burn a cross or start an Auschwitz theme park before he can be considered a racist? My great uncle never did anything, but his statemtns about Mexicans sure as hell made him a racist.

Racial/gender epithets have interesting language usage in my mind. For some people, they stay away from them at all costs. Some people, use them for everything.

I think there is one really important distinction, tho. Are you using it to be descriptive or using it to stereotype a group?

Let me put this example out there to clarify:
-Someone cuts me off on the road and I want to say something at them under my breath, let's say. I could say "that asshole!" but it's non-specific. "Asshole" could be anyone and you'd wear that down in your vocabulary quickly, considering how many assholes are walking around in the world
-So, maybe I wait to see whether it's a guy or girl who drives by and then under my breath say "you bitch!" or "you bastard!" being gender specific. Is that being sexist? I would contend that it's not as you're just trying to make your insult more descriptive, more specific.
-But there's a very fine line. It becomes racist/sexist if you had said "You're just like every other bitch driver" because then you are ascribing a prejudice to an entire group rather than making a statement about one particular person.

Then there's also context and history to keep in mind with regards to how offensive terms are. Most racial epithets are pretty charged words and, frankly, I, personally, just can't say n*- honestly- I just can't do it or even type it. Same with c* for describing females. So that makes things even stickier as you have to add a dimension of potency to a slur.

That said, when you say "get raped by a pack of.." well, unless she was talking about going out with a group of black guys then it seems like "unprovoked" racism and then, well, that sounds like making a generalization and, yeah, racist. So, odds are pretty good that Mel's a racist.

And now he's dumped by Williams Morris. Not a huge surprise because his agent died last week but they went out of their way to cut ties and kick him to the curb. The head of William Morris was already pissed after the incident a few years ago but is now washing his hands of Mel.

I had no idea he hadn't made a movie in 7 years until this year. I know he has some projects under way but I think he's just about done.
