OT - FOFC Short Fiction Contest

I know, this is a little bit off the beaten path.

I've had an itch to do some writing recently, but have lacked the motivation and/or proper focus to get anywhere with that itch. So, I thought that perhaps this might be a worthy exercise - as there have been a variety of people here at FOFC who have fancied themselves worthy of a hack or two at a keyboard.

Now, I'm going to set the rules for this little show... but if this is something that we want to do again, I'm perfectly open to discussion about how to do it better. Initially, though, this will be my event, my rules.

Here they are:

- - - - -

TO PARTICIPATE

-You are asked to submit original work of your creation, of course.

-Submit your material to QuikSand by PM no later than noon on Wednesday, September 24 (that gives you nearly two weeks)

-The length of your material is up to you, as is the form-- this is intended as a "short fiction" contest, but the ultimate judges will be--as outlined below--me (for propriety) and the voters (for competition)

-I reserve the unabated right to exclude any submissions that are inappropriate or inconsistent with the intended spirit of the competition

-After the deadline, I will post the submissions (without any editing, and also without any indication of the authors) subject to one or more polls of the FOFC membership to determine the winner(s)

And the big one...

-Since we want new, original submissions, you will be required to begin your writing with this exact sentence:

At midnight, Robert Johnson walked to the crossroads, and met up with the devil.

- - - - -

If you have any questions about all this - feel free to post them here. I'm hoping to avoid anythingomplicated - I'd just like to receive your text submissions by private message, and then run the contest.

My intent is that the winner of the contest will have the option to run a second installment - perhaps (if he or she chooses to do so) with a similar forced opening (i.e. the winner gets to pick the topic for the next contest).

Good luck, and enjoy.

Anyone else but me and Marmel see that movie?

I don't even remember the title... I just remember watching it one Saturday morning on cable while I was half asleep...

Sounds interesting. It's been a while since I've wrote a short story ('bout a year), but I'll try to find time to come up with something.

The first thing I thought of was replacing "Robert Johnson" with "Kurt Warner."

Bump, just so people can get a chance to snicker at their own private "whacks off" jokes. Oh, and maybe look at the contest, too.

Glad you bumped it. I never saw this and would love to get in on it. I guess I have a little less time.

Oh well...(man, how did I miss it?)

Well, we got a fair number of "neat-o" responses in the thread, but I'm not exactly getting flooded with submissions (I have received only two). That's perfectly fine, I guess... but here's another bump/inquiry.

Would a couple more days make this a somewhat more lively contest? Or should we just call this yet another failed attempt and move on?

(I confess that I intended to get something submitted, but only got about halfway through... darned vacation!)

I submitted a work that I completed about 10 minutes ago. I haven't proof read it and will do so later and resubmit if that is fine with you. Otherwise, Microsoft Word better do a good job.

How could you possibly write a short story?

I'll extend a few more days... I think this will be more interesting if we get a half dozen entries, rather than just two or three. So - for those who have already submitted - if you want to add or rework, go ahead. For everyone else - how about by Sunday?

QuikSand,

I actually missed this until today. I'll try and write something by Sunday, because I'd love to take part in this.

Let's extend this into next week... I'll try to put thing together by, say, Thursday or so. That should give enough time for a handful more entries - and shoudl make this whole thing a shade more interesting, I think.

Well, it's Thursday, and this is a BUMP.

With the extra week, we gained one revised entry, and no new ones. So, are the (several) people who claimed that with a little more time they'd be interested in doing something ... um, close? Would a few more days be meaningful? Or has this little project already topped out?

I was going to write one but I've been inundated with work and home life...I love the first line, but as of now, I wouldn't wait for my short story masterpiece. Sorries.

Damn, mine's not done yet. I only have the first three lines:

"At midnight, Robert Johnson walked to the crossroads, and met up with the devil. But this story isn't about him. So anyways, it was a bright cold day in April and the clocks were striking thirteen..."

Sounds like I should finish in the top two then. That is of course assuming only two entries. Not bad, not bad at all.
