Multiplayer vs Single Player in Console Games

All the talk about multiplayer in text sims got me to thinking about how we play our console games. Although there is multiplayer in console games (obviously) it seems to me that most people play in single player mode and game companies gear each game towards single player mode. Each year game companies come out with a new version of a game that somehow makes the A.I. different and artificially harder. Again, that is my sense of things. I could be wrong.

For whatever reason I prefer older sports games on the NES. Yes the A.I. in RBI Baseball and Tecmo sucked horribly , but the games were built for multiplayer and as multiplayer games I think they stand the test of time against the newer, "more advanced" games.

Am I wrong? Is it fun finding the money play or that loophole that gives you dominance time and time again? Is it fun finding different ways of "beating" the computer? And most important should console games be more geared towards multiplayer?

I rarely play single player console games. The one major exception being my dynasties in sports games (usually secondary to dynasties with friends) and a minor exception of going through fight games to unlock special crap when nobody is around to play against.
