Jayson Hardin-- quest for redemption
I was an up and comer. A young genius. The best recruiting assistant in the country. I have a NCAA ring to prove it. The only problem was my boss. I learned from a master…Tark the Shark himself. But after UNLV and then Fresno State, my reputation was in tatters along with his. “Couldn’t stay clean,” they said. “Runs a loose ship,” they said. No one in college ball would look at me.
So, I suffered. I was out of work for two years—except for the middle school girls team in Compton that I coached for a couple of months. I finally got a break and coached aau ball, winning a national championship. Then Stacey Augmon got me a job with the Hornets front office. I scouted, broke down film, did pretty much whatever. When Jeff Bower fired Byron Scott, I got a chance to step in as an NBA assistant for half a season. But 1990 was a long time ago, when I was 39 year old wiz-kid. I’m 60. I felt that I was running out of time. And then I got offered a job. A big challenge, but I’d have taken any reasonable offer, so coaching in a major conference was great. But there was a catch. After a terrible season, Oregon had fired their head coach. But they were still a 70 prestige team. But then they tried to hire all sorts of crazy people, like KU coach Tom Valdez, after his national championship, and Bulter coach Wade Birdwell. Who all laughed at Oregon. So, finally, Oregon hired Creighton coach Monte Turnbow, a few steps down from what they could have had. Except that a week after he was hired, he changed his mind. With that, Oregon lost their recruiting class. 4 open scholarships, 4 seniors, no freshmen. A huge mess. By July, Oregon was desperate. So was I… Last edited by Portiere : 10-14-2010 at 08:01 PM. --Jayson is a level 6 coach, good at offense and, of course, recruiting. He doesn't care much about academics, often encouraging his players to cut corners and taking high risk players. At 60, I'm going to see what he can do in 10 years or so-- |

Incredibly, despite an RPI in the 80s, we get a 12 seed to the NCAA. I'm not sure what the commitee was smoking, and no, the rumors that I paid for the spot are not true. You think I would pay for a 12 seed? Naturally we get worked by OSU. Season stats: Code:

First, a transfer I picked up from Arizona. He's a So, the only one on my roster. He's probably never going to be starter, but he looks like a contributer. Code:

--Thanks, that's done the trick.
I have to say that the game failed in giving me an NCAA bid--knowing I had a so-so team, I played a crap ooc schedule and I should have been punished for it, but wasn't. But hey, I'll take it--let's see what this #1 recruiting class is worth.-- |

And here are my five frosh. Chris Morgan is loved by my assistant, but he's not as good I'd hoped. The two guards look like they will be be scorers. But the posts are raw (Coomer) and crap (Jones). I wish Coomer would redshirt. Anways, I'm not really sure that this is a #1 class, but a least I got capable bigs.

Here's the squad's roster. I have added a stars rating, to give you a quick look at how strong the players. The starts come from the new FBCB ratings:
1- warm body 2- bench player/ low major starter 3- bench player/ mid major starter 4- starter/ mid major all conference 5- all american candidate We've got a lot of 4s, but I think they're low 4s, which will make this a long year in the pac 10 Code:
And my starters. I'm not sure about this line up--if month one goes badly, I'll shake things up. Code:

After a 1-4 start, I put Gibson and White on the bench--I replace Gibson with Carlos Gaspar, the butt of twilight jokes for his home town but a strictly defense/rebounding player. I like to attack, but you have to get offensive rebounds. I also put in Chris Morgan, and switch my emphasis to outside. We'll see if run and gun can work in the pac-10. A terrible pac-10 campaign. This probably won't get me fired beceause of last year's NCAA apperence, but not at all the way I wanted to start with mostly my recruits. Next year 11 of the guys on scholarship will be mine, and I'd better start to get results in a hurry.

Season three:
We bring in a solid recruiting class, in the top 10 Olen Chacon, a texas PF, comes in after training as a 4/5 player. He's going to be a strong reserve and a force inside next season. Douglas Obannon, a 3/5 frosh shooting guard from California, will push my starters at all three guard/wing positions. Sherwood McCluskey, a juco SF, will push as a 4/4 player to start immediately. Still not enough key players, but I think post season is a reasonable goal. Here are my starters: Code:
You'll notice an absence--last season's frosh all-american Derek Sparrow couldn't be bothered to go to class. Not that going to class matters, but at least cram for the finals, man. Anyways, we're arranging some "tutoring" to help him out. Code:

Not an awful start, but not great; all the serious teams we've played, except perhaps in our opener, have been losses. McCluskey will sit, and Sparrow will return for an offense focused outside. After January, I make a further adjustment, and bench Gibson for Carlos Gaspar. We make a big run at the pac 10 tournament, but fall to UCLA. No post-season for us. Code:
Code:
Then, more great news, Chris Morgan thinks that he is ready for the pros. Its a crazy move-he'll probably be drafted in the mid 40s and play in the NBDL. I know he hates school, but I could have gotten him into the first round. Idiot. Me too, becuase I don't have a pg coming it. Just when I thought we had something. After three years, I'm in trouble. I've come up with 2 top 10 recuriting classes, proving that the magic still exists, but my teams have done nothing on the court. The board is going to be pissed--they didn't bring me in for Oregon to play .500 ball! Depending on how my recruiting turns out, if we have someone who I can press into service as a PG, we should be a tourny team. But, man, fun and gun don't work like it use to. I wish I could buy us a point guard... |

The season is snake bit: Derek Sparrow, Corin Decroy, and Jarrod Brockington all have major injuries. Brockington ruptured his achilles and will miss nearly 300 days of action, including much of next season. Nonetheless, the team displayed great fighting spirit, and managed to a NCAA bid.
We lost a heart-breaker to 7 seed Illinois in the first round. But with the core of my team back for next season, my first class of seniors has a chance to make some real noise. Recruiting went relatively well, but I failed to fill one of my scholarships. I hope this doesn't come back to haunt me. Code:

Another start in the top 10 for Oregon. Personally, I think we're a top 25 team for real, but top 6 is a bit much. We can score well, but we're a bit small and don't have much tested depth. I expect us to go 8-3 or 9-2 in our OOC; if we get lucky, we might beat everyone except Georgetown, who we look slated to meet at the end of our tournament.

A weak January puts us under pressure, and then, injury strikes again--Mel Clark is lost for the season, and David Worthy is done until March. But we respond with an unbeaten February and earn a 5 seed in the big dance. A March collapse does have me a bit worried.

We win running away--they make a late run but it could have been 20. Derek Sparrow bounces back with a man of the match performance. Even better, Ohio State takes out #1 Miss. State, setting up a 5 vs 9 seed battle for a trip to the elite 8. Ohio State is no pushover, and in fact beat us at home in non-conference, but we've come a long way since then.

Another great performance from Derek Sparrow helps us erase a 2nd half deficit and bring home the win. Sparrow with 27 points, Benny Coomer with a 15/10 double double. Duke stuns 2 seed northern Iowa, but Duke is the better team, any way, and we'll play them for a trip to the final four.

Duke embarresses us. We're down 20 at half time. I get tossed for cussing at the ref. The team falls apart, letting Duke go off for 100. What an awful way to end the season. The critics will say this is just like Earnie Kent--beat up on weak teams on an elite eight run only to fold when playing a real time. But you know what--after a couple of days, I can take this. I knew we didn't have a nc team...but now I've got to build one!

Season six for me. Fresh off an elite 8 run, its up to me to prove that I'm not just a one hit wonder. We lost two starters and Mel Clark, plus two important reserves. But we do have a strong starting five, and enough incoming talent to go 8-9 deep. Three of my starters are clear, Olen Chacon and Jered Brockington will be the go to guys, and David Worthy will start at center. We have a point guard battle between Gabriel Glorieux and Noble Thomas (Thomas wins on his D). And we should have a battle between Craig Turnbull and JuCo hotshot Guillaume Deledicque. Unfortunately, Deledicque managed to get himself suspended for academics IN HIS FIRST SEMESTER. I'm not quite sure how that works--I was never good at going to class, but he must have really screwed up. Anyways, here's our roster and our starters: Code:

At the midway point, its hard to complain, except for the Idado loss at home. I swap out Thomas for Deledicque, as the Frenchman has a superb +/-. We'll see how this team does against the juggernaut of the Pac-10.
In a move that many coaches found intriguing, including no doubt the legendary Izude Jestor, UNLV has joined the Pac-ten--and are currently ranked #6 in the nation. Right now 6 of the 10 Pac-ten squads are in the top 25--I'd be happy with 9 and 9 in the league. Code:

Next up is one of the weakest North Carolina teams I've ever seen. In Christner they have a star, if undersized, PF. But fortunately for us, we also have an all-american candidate power forward, and we also have legitimate all-conference wings. I'm really not sure how this team won 20 games. This should be a 2nd easy win.

Once again, we get our clocks cleaned by an ACC team. This time, though, I think we were done by the officiating--the Tar Heels shot 42! free throws, and three of our starters fouled out. I call East Coast bias BS... I'd better shut up before I get fined...

The less said about this season, the better. We started out number 1, but our squad was just not strong enough. A 10-8 pac 10 record isn't enough to make up for bad pre-season losses. We win the NIT--not like that's a tournament I care about. Stats later
