Optical Illusion with a cat....huh?

i don't even know how this is possible - i can't get it to work:

A variation on a classic illusion, this cat can be perceived as rotating in either direction. With practice, you can make it switch at will.

I can't either. But, I think it's the same thing when you watch a cars wheels on tv and then all of a sudden they look like they are spinning in the opposite direction, even though the car is still going in the same direction.

its not even possible. i wish the instructions were more than "with practice you can make it switch at will"....ok, how exactly?? what do i have to do to trick my eyes/brain?

ok i just looked at it again for another 2 minutes and its gotta be a hoax. there's certain points in the rotation where the cat is clearly turning around in a certain direction. no amount of trickery can say otherwise.

I keep getting counter-clockwise (looking down on the cat). I need to try harder.

Isn't it just like the spinning woman one where whichever way you see her spin is supposed to say something about which side of your brain is dominant?

FWIW, I see the cat going counterclockwise also.

Yep. There's another version here: Spinning Cat Optical Illusion | Mighty Optical Illusions that also links to the woman.

I'm seeing her spin counter too.

edit: got her to "switch" by focusing on her foot

Aaaaaaand now I can get the cat to go clockwise too (focused on the point at the lower left where the two shadows begin to overlap).

I can get both. fter seeingit one way I look belo it so that I am not cocusing on the cat and I can only see it on the edge of my vision, soon I notice it spinning the other direction then I slowly look back up to it and I now see it that direction.

The funny thing is that I can't go directly from one to the other. Once I see if the one direction I have to do the look away thing to see it the other way.

lol, just found out that I actually need to do the look below the foot thing to get it to switch. If I just minimize the window and then go back to it later I still see it whatever way I saw it last.

Yeah, I got it to work. I squinted and kind of relaxed my focus. The cat will stop in mid rotation and spin the other direction.

It's not that hard, I have it doing the cabbage patch dance in my mind.

Basically, think of it as the same image that just bounces from side to side.

So when the cat's arm's point left, they don't circle all the way around, they return to the middle, then the image flips. Instead of thinking of it as doing a 360 degree turn, think of it as going 180 degrees, then just going back.

Its like the following (think of the arrows as movement directions):
Code:
<-- --> | V

and not:
Code:
^ | <-- --> | V

i can only see counter-clockwise. i'm trying the tricks everyone else is doing like not focusing on the whole image and picking one spot, relaxing my eyes. this sucks.

I got the woman to spin both ways by reading the paragraph above the image. When I started at the image itself, I only saw her spin in one direction.

HOLY SHIT I GOT IT!

it helped when i clicked on the spinning woman link. i can only get it to go clockwise if i look at the paragraph above the image (to get my eyes to relax on the image, almost looking at it with periphreal vision). then i applied the same trick to the cat. thanks to cuervo for the spinning woman link.
