No, what killed me was pitching, and that's what confuses me. Wow--Martinez was abysmal--and he was the best of my starters. He wins a Prado in the CL with a 2.50 ERA and then posts a 5.51 in the RL. Now, I knew there would eb a regression to the mean, and then another uptick moving to the RL, and from the Napa Valley park to my park. But I was figuring high-3's, maybe low-4s at worst. 5.51 is amazingly poor.

Toss on top of that that Cooke, Kelly and McLean, my 2-4 starters, all had their worst seasons by far, and my #5 starter, failed prospect Sweeney was atrocious (7.68 ERA), and you see the problem. And my pen was even worse, which is really strange. I wasn't even relying on too many rookies or risks. Most of the pen had proven performers.

I had much worse outfield defense, and my defense at 3B was poor for half of a platoon, and my backups in the infield weren't terribly good defenders. So I think I can put some of this to defense. But, man, that's an awful lot of performance drop for defense. I mean, we're talking 2-3 run increases in ERA here.

That certainly is a drastic change for Martinez and your other starters. I'm sure you already thought about defense but did you have suspect fielders on the diamond compared to the previous season? Any big changes in strategy that may have backfired?

If not, I guess it's just one of those weird seasons and you should try to resign all the under-performers you can.

Just the ones I pointed out. The 3B defense wasn't really much worse, outside of the new platoon guiy (Conner)--I didn't have great defense at 3B last year. I had the same guys at 1B, C, 2B and SS. The corner OFs were a little worse, in that I had to cut Collins (90+ RF) and I have to move Prettyman to CF (80+ LF). I think the big difference is that I removed Alonso from CF, a truly excellent defensive OFer to get McIlroy and Quintana in the lineup, and Prettyman isn't even an average CF, much less a replacement for Alonso. So I am sure that had a bit to do with it. What surprised me was the enormity of the drop in performance. I knew the defense would affect things, but this much? Wow.

In the areas which I consider to be truly key defensively, I had the same starters at C (Perez and Davis; Perez okay, Davis excellent), SS (Mosley is a Slick Fielder 100+ SS), and 2B (Gonzalez is solid 70+ 2B, Suguharu the vsLHP platoon is not great, 40+).

I totally missed it happening in 69 as well. That was the week the in laws were here though. Do I get a pass for missing that?

Hmm... only one entry before 2060.

Was 2060 the move to OOTPX?

Thereabouts, yeah. And good observation. I was solely thinking of the offensive explosion we saw in the late 50s and the 60s in the Republic League (and in the league in general), but your unstated point about the possible effect of the OOTPX transition is certainly of interest as well.

Heh...actually, I meant the 1999. It was the 2012 I missed.

Still, point made, I think. There's little doubt we saw a massive offensive explosion in the past 10-15 seasons.

A very nice season for Barrios, and alot of nice development from our kids. I like the way the Marlies are looking for the future.

Good luck to all the playoff teams
