Interleague Play: Good or Bad?

Just looking at my team's upcoming schedule, for the month of June we play 21 more games, 12 of which are interleague, meaning 12 games in which my team can't directly influence their playoff hopes by potentially sending competitions down the ranks with a few losses.

I really do not see the reason behind interleague play, aside to make some fairweather fans happy with LA/LA, NY/NY, CHI/CHI matchups.

I didn't see an option to vote "Inter-league play is almost as much of a travesty as the designated hitter" so voted the closest thing that i could find.

I'm pretty ambivalent on the subject.

Who are the fairweather fans you're talking about? People who slurp ESPN and think these games matter to anyone? There has been very little buzz surrounding Mets/Yankees games for years now, the media are the only ones who talk it up.

The Tigers are in town for three games here in Atlanta next weekend. This makes me happy, because otherwise I'd never see them. For that reason alone, I'm fine with interleague play.

I would prefer they not have it at all, but I really don't care. I think there is too much of it, though. I'd be in favor of maybe 2 weekends of it a season, maybe a home-and-home with a designated rival or something. I haven't really thought through how it would work or the logistics of it.

Then again, without interleague play, Indians fans wouldn't get a shot at seeing Strasburg...

...until NY signs him in 2017 or so, anyway.

I grew up never seeing Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, or Andre Dawson at Tiger Stadium... and it never was a big deal. I saw them on TV, on Sportscenter, and on my Topps Baseball Cards. If they are going keep having inter-league, can we at least get the schedules fixed? How come they cannot do a NFL type schedule? (because the Mets would only play the Yankees every three years, and it would defeat the purpose of inter-league play. )

They do have a rotation where you play every team every 3 years, with an additional "rivalry" matchup annually. Or am I not following what you want?

I totally lost interest in the All-Star game when interleague play started. It's now no longer a big deal to me because the players play against each other during the regular season. The World Series is not as fun either, especially if the teams facing each other in the Series played each other during the regular season.

Yes, I know the same thing happens in the NFL, but, it's different since it's pretty much always been that way.

That's one of the things that I liked about baseball, is that it was different than the NFL in that respect before interleague play began. It gave it a uniqueness to the league and really felt like two big major leagues that were independent of each other, were competing for the world championship. Now it just feels like one giant mish mash of 30 teams trying to climb over one another.

I will note that someone with DEVIL in their name voted yes in the poll. That should tell you enough!

As an AL team fan trapped in an NL team city, I like it. If I wasn't in this situation, I couldn't really care much one way or another.

Personally, I think they should break it out every few seasons so it's a huge deal.

I'm exactly the opposite. I'm a NL guy stuck in an AL city. I just go to New York enough though to catch games there I guess. Not like the Braves came to Boston that often or anything though so not really even a factor.

From what I know about IL play Detroit will visit Atlanta once every six years. For 3 days. That's worth it? Not attacking just asking.

I had trouble matching up one of the provided answers to the question posed.

Do I like interleague play? Yes.
But I don't know that it's a good thing, for many of the reasons stated in this thread.

But I like it.

Sort of like asking "Do you like potato chips?" With the answer choices being "Yes, they're healthy dining choices" and "No, they'll rot your spleen."

This. I used to hate it, but then I ran out of energy. I think it's dumb, but what can you do?

With Oakland a short trip away, it's not as if I couldn't see the AL teams if there were no interleague play - but I enjoy it anyways.

We see it in every other major sport, so I don't see the big deal. It gives you a chance to see players you would otherwise not see every couple of years and changes things up a bit, which I like since the season is so long anyway.

I would rather see the DH go before interleague play so managers in the AL would be forced to make a few more decisions in a game.
