Has anyone been to Madrid?

Passacaglia and I are going to Spain next week for about ten days (3 of them for work). Does anyone have any advice about what to do, or avoid, or really anything about the area? We'll be spending most of the time in Madrid, but one night in Toledo just because it seems like such a cool town.

Thanks in advance!

I was there on business quite a few years ago, but just overnight. From what I saw, though, it's a great city. But the drivers are completely insane.

I've Never Been to Spain
But I kinda like the music
Say the ladies are insane there
But they sure know how to use it
They don't abuse it
Never gonna lose it
I can't refuse it

Well I never been to England....

Go see the bullfights. That's what Ernest Hemingway would have done.

But remember Hemingway is dead...

so it is possible that going to see bullfights can kill you.

Got to agree about the drivers, it must be some kind of macho challange to see who can come closest to a horrific accident, yet still live.

Trying to remember from my time there, Churchs are great, is it the Pravado Art Gallery/museum (it began with P and is really famous !!) thats great.

Personally preferred Cadiz, but then again I prefer costal cities......enjoy

Thanks for your help!

I don't think either one of us is interested in bullfighting. And Hemingway...blah, he sucks. We definitely want to see the Prado museum, but we're mostly excited about just seeing a new place and not doing too many touristy things, unless there's something really cool out there!

For those of you that were there, do you remember any cool cafes or tapas bars offhand? I know there are supposed to be tons, but recommendations are always nice!

I spent two weeks in the south of Spain for my honeymoon. I highly recommend the area. Particularly, we enjoyed Nerja, Marbella, Rhonda and Seville. Also, if you head down that way, you should definitely go to Gibraltar. It is touristy, but worth it. There is something really neat about looking across the straits into Africa.

The tourist season will be winding down and the weather should be perfect. So, if you have a couple of days, I'd recommend the train ride down to the south.

We are considering going to Seville or Cordoba for a day -- I saw something about the high speed trains that can get us there in two hours, but we still have to look into how much that costs and if it's worth it, since there is so much near and in Madrid that looks great. Plus, we both aren't really fans of sunny weather or beaches (yes, I know someone will call us freaks) so we might prefer the northern parts. But then again, those places have so much history, I'd be bummed to be so close and not see them.

Oh, aweseome! Well, I was starting to get worried about the crime, since I've read about it so much all over the place. At first I thought it was just typical big city crime, and since I live in a big city I wasn't too worried, but then I read about elaborate schemes that some crooks have. Do you think it's not something to worry too much about? I was even reading that people don't even carry their wallets, just money belts, but that seems like too much trouble.

What's the name of your hotel? Too bad we already booked a room at one! But based on the pictures of Toledo we might want to stay an extra night!

Here's one I'm almost sure you won't agree with, but I'll toss out anyway. Ayn Rand. Even if you don't agree with all of her views (which I don't completely) she was a great writer.
