Electronics Question -- Sleep Mode

As more and more things have a sleep mode to them, I have a question. Is it better to turn the device off or put it into sleep mode?

In my experience, sleep mode sucks. My computer always gets stuck if it's put in sleep mode.

Turn it off if you're going to be away for a while. sleep mode is an energy-saving safety net for people who are too lazy to shut down.

In all my research on the Kindle, everyone said turning it off drains the battery much more than the sleep mode, and that you should leave it on sleep mode unless you're not going to be using it for a week or so.
