Trading in a car without a title?

I've been negotiating with the dealer via the internet and have reached a nice deal on a new car. I was all set to just walk in tomorrow, sign the papers, and have this over very smoothly. However, I just realized I've somehow misplaced my title on my trade in (a 2002 Toyota.) This is my first time ever having a trade-in to offer. Anyone think the dealer will take the trade-in without a title or is this going to delay the deal? FWIW, the registration does have the title number on the bottom of it.

Doubt they will take it, can't you get a copy from the DMV?

Yeah, I know a replacement title is easy to get. I was just hoping to do the no fuss, no mess approach to getting rid of this car even though I know I'd take a slight hit on the profit by selling it to a dealer.

I guess I could just deal with selling it on Craigslist or one of the other suggestions mentioned in the thread I found on here, once I get a replacement title from the DMV.

Dealers only care about moving cars off the lot.
Doubt not having a title is going to be a problem.
They rather make a sale, than worry about the owner not having the title available.

Thanks guys. Apparently, tucker rocky is right. I just need to sign a release for them to take the car without the title. I'm waiting for them to complete the paperwork right now.

I also had to pay money (the cost of a new title) and sign a limited power of attorney giving them permission to obtain a new title on my behalf. I also promised to sign over the new title once it comes in, I won't get my permanent plates until I do so. Overall, today was the best car buying experience I've ever had.

An 09 Infiniti G37, they gave me the best deal of my various top choices, and they have excellent reviews on the various sites such as consumer reports among others.
