Asked my girlfriend's dad if I could marry his daughter

He said yes.

Good god, that was proably the most difficult thing I've ever done in my life. I was literally shaking, hoping he wouldn't say know. I went in knowing what I wanted to say, then completely froze as I was about to ask him. I just didn't feel like I could come up with anything that would make logical sense as top why I should get to marry his daughter. He did not ask his wife's parents if they could get married, so I knew it would mean a lot if I asked him for his blessing.

Thank God the hard part is over. Actually proposing to her will be a breeze (just need her ring size...). The only difficult part now will be letting my parents know. Chances are tehy will be shocked like my girl's parents were, but they should be supportive all the same. Already told my sisters and they were excited, tehy really like my girlfriend.

So, please welcome the soon to be Mrs. Easy Mac (not to be confused with a Mrs. Kippy).

P.S. SkyDog, I'd let you perform the wedding, but you're not Catholic, you heathen (but your political views would mesh well with her family)

Ahhh, I remember asking my father-in-law. I knew he'd say 'yes', but it was still one of the hardest things I've had to do. You feel like he's looking you over thinking 'This little creep isn't even close to good enough for my daughter', which of course is true but nevertheless...

Congrats!

I wanted to ask my gf's father but she spilled the news that I was going to ask her to marry me before I had the chance. She was aware of it well before it happened just didnt know when I would do it.

After she told him we were going to get married(again before I had "officially proposed") he brought me several tools and a Home & Garden hat. Since he is big into that type of activity I suppose he supported my asking her. Either way I wish I had the oppurtunity to be nervous and ask my gf's father for his daughters hand. You will always remember that you did ask him, again congrats!

dating 2 years.

I knew the first time I saw her, I would marry her. Its just taken a little while to come to grips with the fact that I'm ready for this, and that I didn't meet her too soon (before I was ready to "settle down").

I never did this, nor did I ever think about doing it. Oh well. We're coming up on 4 years in 3 weeks, and everything is alright, so it must have worked out just fine.

Congrats! Welcome to the club - if there's anything particular you want about your wedding, better figure it out now and be ready to bring it up right away. Otherwise she'll make the decision without you and your screwed in a figurative (rather than literal, damnit) sense.

When I asked my fiancee's father (ooh, about a month and a half ago now) - and over the phone, no less, which sucked since he was six hours away and I couldn't figure a way to get down there without arousing suspicion - he laughed. Not the greatest ego booster there. But then he said yes, so that's okay.

Congrats. Classy move Easy Mac. I'm sure her father apprecieted the fact that you asked him.

I did the same about 13 years ago and I still get nervous thinking about it. Fortunately, my father in law is an amazingly great guy and we get along wonderfully. Hopefully you end up with a good relatinship with her dad as well.

Good luck to you.

Easy ways to get her ring size:

Her mom or sisters may know

if not, take a ring of hers without her knowledge, bring it to get sized, and return it before she knows it is gone.

Oh, and congrats!

Sucker, I mean, congrats.

In time you will regret that you did it so early (not even out of college yet) but there are exceptions to every rule. My only advice is to not have kids until you are sure you are going to stay together. I know it is easy to say now, but wait until the bills start piling up and the way you get toothpaste all over the sink makes her want to kill you. :-)

My girlfriend always tells me that if we are going to get married I'm going to have to ask her dad before I propose. The problem is that the dude hates my guts. Should be a fun, fun time...

a) is it possible to move in with your girlfriend before marriage?
b) does Texas have commonlaw marriages?

Easy - did your brother/uncle buy you a beer after he said yes?

Does he have more than one daughter, and if so, did you actually indicate specifically which daughter you were asking to marry?

If your girlfriend insists on this, just wait until her father dies. Or kill him.

Hmmm...good question. That would certainly be cheaper than spending mucho dinero on a damn wedding...

Well, he is smaller than me. And he does have a bad back right now. And high blood pressure. Maybe I'll take a little trip to Abilene this afternoon...

But if he "accidentally" died I bet she would still insist that I ask her mom. And her mom hates me more than her dad. Maybe I should just blow up their entire household. Except for the cat. The cat's OK...

You can live with your girlfriend if the two of you agree to it and are at least 18. Nobody can stop you.

Well, yeah, we've talked about moving in together and will probably do it sometime in the future. But for some reason she insists upon the marraige thing...

Oh, and her parents are paying for her college, so they certainly have a say so in the matter. It wouldn't be difficult for them to cut her off...

Heck if I know. Maybe she'll decide we should elope. Once again, that would save a whole hell of a lot of money...

Hmm... Watch for newspaper headlines about JeeberD's girlfriends parents house being blown up... Save this message for blackmail purposes.

Ah, JeeberD, are you by any chance rich?

Yeah, but it's a cat, so you should blow it up anyways (j/k)
