HBO's Assault in the Ring
This was a great documentary on the 1983 fight between Luis Resto and Billy Collins Jr, when Resto's manager dipped his hands in plaster, basically turning his hands into casts, and he just destroyed Collins to the point where Collins had to retire. He then went into depression and ended up killing himself.
If you get a chance to watch it OnDemand or whatever do it, it's incredibly fascinating. |

Yeah, read an article on that in college. I'll have to check it out - was a crazy story.

Damn. This was pretty wild. You definitely feel real awful for Collins, and a bit for Resto, because at least Resto has shown some remorse. The guy who comes out smelling an absolute dog is Panama Lewis, whose actions are made all the more reprehensible by his outright denial of everything.

Tough to feel bad for Resto. The plaster of paris revelation is new and if it had come out shortly after the fight, Resto may still be in jail today.

This was a great documentary.
The Real sports with Bryant Gumbel was terrific this time as well. The Northwestern women's lacrosse team and the little girl with brain cancer made me cry for the first time in years. |
