The Annals of the Bayberry Clan - A King of Dragon Pass Dynasty

I've decided to dust off King of Dragon Pass and write a dynasty about it, to boot!

King of Dragon Pass is a mixed-genre game set in the Hero Quest universe, an RPG/Tactical hybrid that sort of plays out in a storybook kind of way.

Anyway, I'm going to do an Easy game set to Long, which means that in order to win the game, I am going to have to unite clans to form a tribe, and unite the tribes in order to form a Kingdom, thereby naming one of my clansmen as the King of Dragon Pass.

Our clan's most important god is Orlanth, the father. This means that we start out with a temple to Orlanth.

Our earliest famous event is The Clan Making Dance, which gives our leaders above average skills in Leadership.

Our tradition dictated that we took in the Nalda Bin, a nomadic people, as thralls, or slaves. This means that slave-holding is an accepted tradition in our clan.

Our ancient enemy was Vas Venna, Son of Valind, Warrior of the Ice Tribe. Ancient enemies are still around in our time, and we are expected to maintain emnity towards them.

Our clan is a peace clan, favoring trade and diplomacy over war and bloodshed.

We awoke Ernalda, the Mother Goddess, first, asking us to bless the soil that we toiled upon for our livelihood. We start out with a shrine to whichever deity we awoke first.

We held a neutral attitude toward dragons.

We claimed more land than we needed, to grow into. Having the right amount of land is tantamount to prosperity in Dragon Pass.

In order to prosper, we must be able to govern in the ways of our ancestors. Doing so will reward us with magic and will please the Gods.

So, armed with the above knowledge, I now enter the game.

Each year, the game is divided into six different phases. The beginning of the year is Sacred Time, a time when magic points are allocated into different rituals. The five seasons following the Sacred Time are Sea, Fire, Earth, Dark, and Storm. Sea is for planting crops, Fire is usually for raiding and battle, Earth is for harvest, Dark is wintertime, while Storm is similar to Fire, although with unpredictable weather. Each season lasts two turns, allowing me to do one action each turn.

Our very first Sacred Time, and we seem to be facing trouble already. The seers have forecast an impending attack on our tula (land), and, unfortunately, we are not allowed to allot magic to War rituals. I decide to spend 5 points of Magic, leaving 2 in reserve, in case of unforseen events. I will have to reorganize the Ring. Being a peace tribe doesn't mean we shouldn't have able warriors in our Clan Ring.

I spend the very first turn organizing a new Clan Ring, most of them having extraordinary skills, and a few chosen for the Diety that they follow. Having seven different dieties represented on the ring is favorable, in order to receive different prespectives in clan decisions.

Mosdorl, M, 55, Orlanth Worshipper. We please the Gods by having an Orlanth Worshipper as the Clan Leader.

Enastakos, M, 32, Elmal Worshipper. - Elmal Worshippers are usually good warriors. Enastakos is no different.

Minara, F, 38, Issaries Worshipper. - Minara is our best trader, as most Issaries followers are.

Terasarin, M, 37, Lankor Mhye Worshipper - Terasarin is the most knowlegable about the customs of our clan, making him our Lawmaker.

Renatha, F, 34, Ernalda Worshipper - Renatha is a renowned magician, a welcome addition to any clan ring.

Colymar, M, 55, Barntar Worshipper - He is the best skilled Barntar worshipper in the clan, and earns his place in the ring for being so.

Enastarra, F, 60, Chalana Arroy Worshipper - Enastarra is an excellent trader, but most of all, she worships the Goddess of Healing, giving us an able Healer in the ring.

Having a solid Clan Ring is important if the tribe is to brave through the years ahead.

Cool. I could only rarely get through a quest and so always stalled out at a certain point. I'll be reading.

Here's a look at our map of Dragon Pass.

Our tula is the one marked by white borders. The other clans surround us. The blue-colored Clans are our allies, the red-colored Clans are clans we are feuding with. The cooler the clan color, the friendlier they are towards us.

We are currently allied with the Jerending and Hiord clans, while we are feuding with the Oak Tree and Varmandi clans.

Here is an overview of the Bayberry Clan at the start of 1330.

Sea Season, 1330

We only have 8 weaponthanes. Despite being a Peace Clan, I'm going to have to hire several more if we expect to withstand raids from other clans. I manage to find four from promising carls in our tula, giving us 12 weaponthanes.

Fire Season, 1330

Wood nymphs?

A beautiful woman appeared in the woods. Some said that she ensnared our men. We ignored the rumors.

Cautious about impending raids, we do not send out any expeditions, raids, or caravans from our tula. We will most likely remain home sacrificing to the Gods all year.

We sacrifice to Humakt, and he reveals to us the secrets of the Battle Luck ritual. When this blessing is active, it increases our chances of winning a battle.

We do not run a raid this year, cautious of an impending attack on our tula. Instead, we build a shrine to Humakt in order to provide us with a permanent Battle Luck blessing.

Earth Season, 1330

Trouble...

Darndrev died of a terrible curse when plants sprouted from his body. We cast a curse-lifting spell on all of the men of the clan. 3 carls died. One of them was married; so we knew that he had committed adultery with the mysterious woman of the woods.

We sacrifice to Orlanth, and he reveals the secrets of the Thunderstone ritual, a blessing that increases the effectiveness of our skirmishers.

We build a shrine to Chalana Arroy, providing us with a permanent Healing blessing.

Dark Season, 1330

Neighbors visit...

Jarolor of the Blue Spruce clan offered us gifts. We accepted the gifts, noting that we might be able to form a trade agreement with them sometime soon.

We add four more weaponthanes, giving us a total of 16. We are cautious about the coming Storm season. Perhaps the raids that our seers saw at Sacred Time would come then.

Odayla cultists offered to perform a ritual to make the hunting better in our area. We accepted their offer, and said we owed them a favor. They thanked us in kind, and said that the Anzarni, which many of them belonged to, would one day take us up on that favor. Favors are a useful bargaining chip in Dragon Pass.

We sacrifice to our Ancestors, and receive the secrets of the Summons of Evil ritual. It allows us to summon our ancient enemies should we with to prove our worth and fight it.

Storm Season, 1330

Weary and anxious of impending raids, trouble brews for the Clan Ring...

A delegation of the clan’s leading women raised serious complaints against the job Mosdorl was doing as chief. The ring reminded the complainers of their obligation to follow chosen leaders. Enothea soon found the error of her ways.

We build a watchtower, to alert us of upcoming raids.

We sacrifice to Lankor Mhye, the Knowing God, but we received no response. Perhaps we should have used more goods to sacrifice.

The season ends with our tula untouched by other clans. The Gods have been good to us this year.

Last year's summary

Sacred Time

We get 9 points of magic to spend on rituals for the upcoming year. We spend one point in War, expecting to run a cattle raid in the upcoming Fire season. Points toward Health, Trade, and Diplomacy are spread out. We spend two points on Mysteries to help us learn the blessings of the Gods.

Sea Season, 1331

We send Rana, one of our skilled hunter/warriors along with 10 weaponthanes and 3 footsoldiers to explore the Quiven Mountains. Sending expeditions out at least once a year gives us more knowledge about the land, hunts down bandits and thieves, and we might find a treasure or two.

Rana came back from the mountains and told us that she had found the lair of a wyrm.
Our ancestors did not associate themselves with Dragons, and neither do we. We decide to trade the map away to another clan. However, nobody was interested in the map.

Humakti warriors said we should give them permission to enter our tula and fight the undead. We granted it, and gave them gifts. They praised us as an honorable clan. They found spectres and ghouls everywhere, and put them to the sword. We knew that our lands were haunted, but had no idea just how much danger our people were in. We were overjoyed that they vanquished the undead on our tula.

The beautiful wood nymph returned. Three men admitted to having been with the woman, who they say had “eyes that were impossible to resist.” We performed a ritual to lift any curses they have been under.

We sacrifice to Issaries, the God of trade, and receive the ritual for Spare Grain.

Fire Season, 1331

We decide to go on a cattle raid against the vile Oak Trees. We send 10 weaponthanes and 5 footsoldiers. The raid is a success and we sneak away with 14 cows.

Trouble with centaurs...

The thrall Dangmet reported that the carl Angorri had been slain by a centaur. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors told us that it would be hard to find the centaur who had killed Angorri. We composed a poem in honor of Angorri. Terasarin’s poem was moving, and everyone said that Angorri’s spirit would be honored to hear it.

Minara is sent to the Anzarni to negotiate a trade agreement between our tribes. We give her 6 weaponthanes and 15 footmen as escort.

Earth Season, 1331

Orlev died of a terrible curse when plants sprouted from his body. We cast a curse-lifting spell on the men who had met the woman of the woods. The curse was not repeated. Our menfolk are certainly fools for trusting this wood creature.
A sacrifice to Orlanth has revealed to us the secrets of the Making of the Storm Tribe myth. We already know the myth, and having its secrets revealed to us is vital in allowing us to perform this heroquest. If we succeed in performing this heroquest, we are sure to gain the blessing of the Gods to form a tribe.

Minara returns with news about our attempt to form a trade route...

Urox the Bull received a sacrifice from us and revealed the secrets of the Sense Chaos ritual.

A couple from another clan offered to sell us the Farwalk Sandals, magical items that would give us luck in adventuring . We tried to reduce the price they were asking. We convinced them to part with it for less. We put the Farwalk Sandals in a safe place.

The harvest was plentiful.

Dark Season, 1331

Our scouts found a strange clan of beast folk who were like ducks. What good would being a peace clan be if we did not offer peace? With justice and mercy, we offered peace to the duck people, who henceforth gave our clan a place of honor in their songs.

We offered sacrifices to Lankor Mhye once more, but he did not respond.

Ancient enemies encroach upon our land!

The forces of cold and darkness attacked our land with snow and wind. Our herds were threatened. We assembled a party of warriors to fight the ice demons. Enastakos, our Warleader, took all 16 of our weaponthanes with him.
Desperately we fought them. Ultimately we prevailed, losing only one thane. We gained magic for following the path of our ancestors and fighting our ancestral foes.

The stubborn Knowing god, Lankor Mhye, receives a larger sacrifice from us and reveals the details of his myth, Lankor Mhye Finds the Truth.

Storm Season, 1331

We increase the number of our crafters from 11 to 30. Having more goods to trade is better.

Mordrim the Stout of the Anzarni clan wanted to buy our treasured bull, Blacktail. Although we could not part with the fertile bull, we did offer Mordrim’s clan Blacktail’s stud service.

We sacrificed to Issaries once again this year, but this time we received only confused visions.

The year ends, and we are pleased with how it went.

I never understood the game completely, but I loved it.

Should find my CD when I get back to the US and see if I can get it going again.

Last year...

Sacred Time

We start the year off with 13 points of magic. We spend two points for Herds, and then spread out one point each to Trade, Diplomacy, Health, War, and Mysteries. We have 5 points of Magic left in reserve.

Sea Season, 1332

We send out Minara on an exploratory quest again, this time on our own tula.
The exploration party found gems in a cliff on our tula:

Minara ventures out of our land once more, to the Arnoring clan, asking them for cows as a payment of an owed favor.

Acting as our emissary, Minara asked the Arnorings to make good on the obligation they owed us, and provide us with cattle. Minara asked for no more and no less than the usual amount. The Arnorings gave us the cattle without complaint.

Fire Season, 1332

Strangers appear on our lands...

Strange explorers came to our tula. We told them we didn’t have what they wanted. “I hate adventuring in barbarian areas,” the odd beastman said. They departed without further incident.

Fire season is upon us, and we decide to raid the Oak Trees for their cattle!

Enastakos led a cattle raid against the Oak Trees, we stole 33 cows from them without alerting their guards.

We decided to turn 18 more acres of our land into cropland, and add 30 more acres into pasture.

Earth Season, 1332

A favor due...

Frithorf, of the Taraling clan, asked us to give him grain, because we owed him a favor. We gave him more than he wanted. Frithorf praised our generosity, and said that all of Dragon Pass would hear of it. Our carls were displeased with us; they said that generosity had to be tempered with common sense. They complained that this rash gift risked starvation.

We sacrificed to Lankor Mhye, and he revealed the workings of the Clan Lore ritual.

We sacrificed to Orlanth, and he revealed the workings of the Woad ritual.

Politics and marriage...

Three young men all sought the hand of Natalina, a young woman of our clan renowned for her cleverness and beauty. We said that the winner of a series of contests could have her hand. The people were excited, and others came from miles around to witness the contests. We conducted favorable trade deals, and were given gifts by our neighbors. The contests were won by Brangbane of the Stag Hearth clan. He told us the story called “The Contests.” Natalina seemed satisfied that she had the best man of the three. Our god-talkers were disappointed, as they already knew the myth.

Dark Season, 1332

Noticing that we hadn't built one yet, we build a shrine to Lankor Mhye.

The forces of Chaos...

Ernaldness of the Blue Spruces asked us to help slay a walktapus that was stalking their tula. We did it in honor of Urox, foe of Chaos. We sent Enastakos, along with 14 warriors. They did not find the walktapus.

We sacrificed to Issaries, and he revealed the workings of the Silvertongue ritual.

Storm Season, 1332

We recruit more weaponthanes and now have 19 patrolling our tula.

We build a shrine to Issaries, in order to gain his favor and blessing.

Storm season ended with nothing much happening on our land.

Do all the magic points you hold in reserve accumulate over time? Can you use them at will or only later in sacred times?

This is very interesting and I had never heard of it either.

I forgot how much I suck at this game, at least with a Peace clan. May have to try again with a War clan.

molson: It's a very old game (1999) from A Sharp. They're still selling it, although they have to ship the CD to you.

thealmighty: Clan Magic points can be used during sacred time, raids, and during events whenever necessary. It accumulates over time if not used. It can also increase / decrease due to certain events.

izulde: I've always either played a balanced or a peace clan. I can't hack it as a war clan.
