Grunting in tennis vs. vuvuzela in soccer

Poll To Come

FTR I don't see what the big deal is about either of these things. Neither one has reduced my enjoyment of watching either. However it seems to be a big issue over the last couple of weeks. Which one is more annoying to you? The grunting (specifically the females grunting since I have not heard any complaints about the guys) in tennis or the vuvuzela which are the plastic horns that were handed out during the Confederations Cup.

I said the vuvuzela because I'm in love with Maria Sharapova and nothing she does could possibly be wrong.

Neither noticeably detracts from my viewing enjoyment though, I don't really get the outrage here.

This is like asking me what is more annoying - somone screaming at me from down the street, or someone screaming at me from China.

Plus, I didn't really think the Venezuelans were THAT annoying that they should be singled out (seriously, WTF is a vuvuzela?!).

sort of a blow horn type instrument (out of plastic mostly) with a kind of deep sound (and 1 sound only, part of the annoyance with it) that can be hold for ages, is used heavily and mainly by supporters of South African Soccer Teams since like the mid 90s, for some reason unknown ...
And since the Confederation Cup was there (and World Cup will be) it made it´s way into the public ear

I found it to be fine, but then again i´ve live in Africa for years as a teenager and thus have a high tolerance for rather untypical music/tunes.
Actually i even like the sound of it, although i get why players could complain.

It´s just how it is, african stadium atmosphere is different and "we" should maybe just embrace the suck for once, it´s not like Africa will host another major global sporting event in the next 30 years ...

Tennis grunting however ... Sounds worse with some then others though. But there is nothing worse than a player suddenly starting to grunt mid match out of nowhere (which happens enough), that is one of the big WTF Moments in sports watching

I didn't see a second of the matches, so I don't know how annoying they are. But I hate the whistles and crap in general that I've heard during soccer matches, so I'm sure I'd consider this annoying, too.

This is a new kind of something for me. It's 1,000's of people blowing these things non-stop for the entire match. It's very weird - and annoying imo.

If you like a continuous droning sound in the background for your sporting events, the vuvuzela is right up your alley.

And fwiw - I'm against "artificial noise" in any respect from fans. I think that crowd noise should be made by people - yell, scream, clap, stomp - i'm a bit of a traditionalist with that.

Are the vuvuzelas the things responsible for the Confed Cup matches all sounding like they were played with a swarm of killer bees overhead? If so, I hate them.

Don't they have those things or similar at MLS games? I hear that same crap all the time in those games? Most annoying thing ever. Yes, it seriously detracts from my enjoyment of the games.

Technicaly the grunting in tennis is actually cheating.

A large amount of the information a player reacts to when the ball is struck is the sound it makes coming off the racket. When a player grunts loudly it disrupts that sound and interferes with their opponents ability to react.

Now some would say thats a tactical choice, however tennis is a "gentleman's" sport, everything about the rules and regs for tennis are designed to remove such artificial interferences with game play.

Grunting must go.
I

I don't give a frak about soccer noise.

The xuxavulvas or whatever they're called are not cool. They really don't bother me, but my wife very nearly made me turn off the Confederations Cup final because of that noise. I actually felt guilty for watching it because I knew the sound was annoying her. I don't like sports to make me feel guilty unless I've charged the field, bludgeoned a backup cornerback with my shoe, and then sat down on the ground and sadly reflected on what I'd done.

Not that that's ever happened more than once.

Normally, I'm the first to mute the television because of an annoying sound. The horns don't bother me at all, though.

I often watch football with the sound off, because there are so many commercials. So it's nice to watch soccer, because they refuse to stop the action every three minutes. I can leave the sound on without risk.

It's sort of a white noise. And it reminds me a lot of going to Michigan football games when I was a kid, All Saturday long, there were airplanes flying banner ads close to the stadium (that was banned after 9/11).

I'm pretty sure "after the world cup" was implied in his answer
