Seeing the rosters like that shows me some clear favorites and a couple of WTF drafters, but I'll keep the members of those two categories to myself until I hear rationales...

One of the things I'd encourage the voters to notice is the versatility of my picks. My government is composed of well rounded people, while still being terrific candidates in their own categories. There was no fudging of categories, location or time periods for my draftees.

I think most of my people are "names" people would have heard of before. I do have a couple of less heralded people:
Admiral Sun-sin is celebrated in Korea in many of the same ways Washington is celebrated here. His defense of the Korean homeland against the invasion of a superior force makes him one of, if not the, best admirals of all time.

Daw Aung San Suu Ky has been in the news lately. She has bravely fought against the repressive Burmese military rule advocating for democracy. She has, deservedly, won the Noble Peace Prize.

In fact our nation has more Noble Prizes than any other nation, demonstrating the respect that the whole world has for the leading citizens of this country.

I'd be happy to talk about any picks or answer any questions.

So, the underlying plan here, is a self-sufficient country that has the leaders of science, learning, and culture. We're the beacon of civilization nestled with the picturesque Alps guarding our borders.

Our leader I chose as a man who both forged a great world, but also had administrative/management abilities. Charlemagne not only ruled over Europe and drove invaders from the Iberian back, he did his damndest to bring the west out of the post-Roman Empire Dark Ages.

As far as science and learning goes...we have Einstein managing our science, Jesus himself bringing spiritual enlightenment to the masses, Socrates, the father of thought himself keeping our laws both sane and logical, and Billy Shakespeare as the patron of the arts. We've got culture out the ass.

That said, we're not belligerent. Our military is headed by two fantastic tactictians, with a common theme: Excellence with small forces. Our military action is surgical, with Rommel and Henry Morgan being perfectly suited towards small raids, and tactical advantage. In the Air, we have a man who pioneered building aerial weaopns of war. His designed, combined with our superior scientific ability, will give us the edge.

Financially, we are an open trading power, with the founder of the Austrian School of Economics dictating policy. We stress the free market, and our neutral, moderately isolationist political guidelines make us perfect to forge a worldwide trade empire. Again on the theme of neutrality, the mastermind of the International Red Cross and driving force behind the Geneva Convention makes us an ideal location to mediate disputes between other nations.

We have the technological/cultural prowess and advocate open trading and military neutrality. We don't start fights, but we'll make like hell for any who try and drag us down.

Which of course, brings us to the pick I know everyone hated, Yasser Arafat. Hate him or not, the man is a master bullshitter, manipulator, and all around guy who can talk his way out of situations. He not only managed to survive his own people not killing him, he managed to get the world to award him a freakin' Nobel Peace Prize. Anyone with his checkered past who can pull that off is a guy who can negotiate anything.

Voila.

Except he ended his life isolated and pretty much powerless. All of that effort led to very little.

Abe Sargent - Marco Polo, Chief Diplomat, Italy, Pre-20th
Abe Sargent - Mother Theresa, Civil Rights Activist, Albania, 20th
Abe Sargent - Sergey Korolyov, Air Chief, Ukraine, 20th
Abe Sargent - Siddhartha Buddha, India, Religious Leader, Pre20th
Abe Sargent - Tōgō Heihachirō, Japan, Navy Chief, 20th

Alright so here is my roster.

Everyone has great army chiefs, but mine is the only general to go undefeated, and let's not forget that he forged a world changing empire. Other draftees might talk about how their general is good, and won wars, but mine is the only one to go undefeated. I also have the only undefeated warrior in Miyamoto Musashi, who was not only undefeated as a samurai, but wrote one of the seminal works of military strategy as well. Togo Heihachiro has been called one of the greatest admirals of all time and the Nelson of the East. His naval victories over a much more powerful Russia positioned Japan for dominance in East Asia. I have one of the key figures in the Soviet space program as my Air Chief, a guy who designed and led the teams for sputnik and vostok; with inferior technology he made superior product, and it was only after his untimely death that the Russian space program began its spiral down.

So I am very happy with the military arm of my nation. My ruler/leader, Ramses II, also known as Ozymandias, was also a strong military leader, keeping the Hittite Empire from defeating him even during a massive ambush when his troops were outnumbers and out positioned. He was the greatest Pharaoh of all time, ruling for decades and decades over the Golden Era of one of the greatest and most enduring empires.

I have a modern day scientist who founded one of the true scientific disciplines of the modern age in Sigmund Freud. A man who needs no introduction to his achievements.

I have one of the banner religious leaders of all time, with Buddha. His achievements during his life led to one of the largest and most successful religions in history.

I have one of the great thinkers of all time in John Locke, founder of modern Liberalism, and a person with very high ethics and intellect as my Justice Minster. I have complete faith in his ability there. I also have Mother Theresa as my civil rights activist, a women who dedicated her entire life to not just talking about helping the disenfranchised, but who passionately threw herself at the problem, and inspired generations of the world to do the same.

Marco Polo is our Chief Diplomat, and here is a man who opened lines of communication and trade that were thought to be unopenable. He brought together two sides of the world, and reopened up the Silk Road to China, which would connect east and west for centuries.

You might not recognize the name of Sir Arthur Lewis, but here is a the first black winner of an academic Nobel, knighted by the UK, who did ground breaking work in the areas of developing countries. He is one of only three winners of the Nobel for Economics outside of the US and western Europe. His economic theories were adopted successfully by countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong (a city-state at the time) and Jamaica. He also was President of the Caribbean Development Bank, charged with the investment and development of countries in the Caribbean, and helped to take it to one of the most successful and influential banks in the world. He not only was a great theorist, but also great in practice.

Michelangelo is one of the top artists of all time. His sculpting was without peer, he revolutionized architecture and pushed art and frescos as far as could be done by medieval man. The Sydney Opera House was one of only two manmade structures from the 20th century to be considered for the New Wonders of the World. It helped to put Australia on the map and provides a venue for a variety of arts that reinvigorates Sydney. A great nation should be about more than wars and there should be a place for great art as well.

The Nile needs no introduction. Even today, it is the lifeblood of one of the early cradles of civilization, giving modern countries like Egypt an artery of life in the otherwise unforgiving dry lands.

I think we have a really good nation, with people from countries from St. Lucia to India, Japan to Greece, and Egypt to Australia. We have some of the greatest leaders, generals, admirals, artists, thinkers and humanitarians ever. We simply have the best general and warrior ever. I am very happy with my nation, and I hope you will be impressed as well.

I honestly think BK has one of the strongest drafts. I think mine is better, but not by much. I think Izulde also has a really strong draft too. Again, I'd say mine is better, but not much more so.

Simply put I went the route of what a modern nation would need and be able to trade the surplus to make us an economic power. Oil is not just for machines or cars, the by product of refined oil to name a few are plastic, efficient electricity, agricultural products, etc.

My leader is the man responsible for some of the psalms of the bible. He also shares the same bloodline as Jesus. He is widely recognized as an important figure in religious history by Jews, Christians, and even Muslims. He is a respected leader who can get the job done.

My choice of King Solomon for Justice Minister is due in large part to that story of the two women. He is usually associated with wisdom and that is something want out of my Justice Minister.

Imhotep, I picked him last draft and I chose him again because he is an important figure who many of the great minds of our time owe their knowlegde to in part. Known as the father of medicine he also would serve as a great medicial cheif. He is also known for his artitecture and engineering of the temples.

Saladin - He was the one who drove the christians out of the holy land and was a respectful general. The holy land would not be recaptured in his lifetime despite the attemps of Richard the Lionheart.

The internet would be my second most important pick because with that comes communication. We would control information, we could reach anyone who is connected(for a fee of course ) at anytime. For my people the world would be a lot smaller. We also would control things like text messages and wireless phones. Since no one has an emp or nuclear bomb there would be no way in war my communications would go down.

You may rip away.

I think there are some good things from your draft. I think King Solomon as Justice Minister was inspired. You have the best 20th century athlete. I can;t fault your Artist, Religious, Army Chief, or Civil Rights choices. The Internet was a popular choice, but one I'm not comfortable with, but I titally get why you took it, and I can't fault that either.

A lot of people got unknowns for economist and air chief, so I can;t dig there either.

And that's almost all of your draft, solid to my mind.

However, I take issue with a couple of picks, and here is where it falls. You could have gotten one of the sexy and iconic names of all time, some of the most impactful people in all history at the 1.5 position. And you took the Oil Fields way too early. Imagine your draft virtually identical but with Muhammad or the Red Baron or Einstein or many of the other options available to you. It might have really put you near the top. Instead you reached hard for the Oil Fields, and took them rounds before others would.

The other thing I'm not convinced about is King David as ruler/leader. As I list all 12 ruler/leaders in order that I think they were good at R/L, I have King David Nehru back in the back two dueling to see who is 11th and 12th, but I think I gotta go with King David as the worst r/l in the draft. Davis is mostly known for being a Godly ruler and man, and as a Christian myself, I find that very refreshing and good. However, he was not a super great ruler/leader. King Solomon was. Solomon built the Great Temple, expanded the borders, had peace in his time, respect from other rulers, etc. Solomon was the great ruler, not David. You have a better ruler at Justice Minister than you do at ruler/leader, and that's an odd way to go. If you are going pre-20th century for ruler/leader, you had tons of places to go, from Queen Elizabeth to Constantine the Great to Qin Shi Huangdi and all of the others still on the board because you took your leader early.

Just imagine your draft ,exactly as it is, but with Ghandi at Civil Rights, Jesus at Religious, Einstein at scientist, etc from 1.5 and with Queen Isabella as your ruler/leader (which would piss off Izulde)? That's a powerful country, and you probably flat out win.

I think you were close, and those two things would really propel you. No country is perfect. I said in the thread that I could have gotten Togo much later and grabbed a better person at that pick. Having said that, I still think your draft is in the upper half of players. Good job!

I want to say, for the record, that although I think Izulde's draft is great, I am very, very, very disappointed by his choice of man-made structure. Where is Alhambra?

Thanks for the write up Abe. I understand the oil fields was indeed a reach introspect but at the time I did not know the draft was going to be a rehash of the one before it. I think I did fine enough not to be in last place (I hope) as for King David I think he is a good leader and very inspirational. He has a very good council to help with his decision making process.

I just looked at your draft and wow you quietly put together a strong nation. I disagree with maybe two of your picks but the rest are solid. I expect you to finish in the top 3 because you don't have one pick that is a what the hell. (Like me)

Simply put this was a funny draft that dragged at the end but still fun. Guys like Abe and Danny provided a lot of humor with their comments and their back and forth. Everyone involved I want to say thanks it was fun and I definately learned something just like last time.

I hope next time Bucc and his brother take part because they always provide unique and well thought out picks.

Thanks Larry for putting this together.

From a voter's perspective, I think the oil fields were one of the stronger geographical picks.

Just to be clear on what we are voting on. We are voting for whose country would prosper the most correct?

It's whatever voting criteria you want to use, I think. If I remember right, how voters vote is entirely up to them.

Thanks.

And I'd have loved to get the Alhambra in there, but I needed a 20th C one and besides, I used up Spain with Isabella and El Cid.

I went with more of a militant society . Many of our leaders can double up in other positions in case of emergency. An island nation is more defensible than most others so we needed a strong naval leader. Sure, most took great surface fleet leaders but I went with probably the best sub sea commander. Our nation will be protected be a vast submarine fleet that in case of war can strike anywhere and everywhere quietly. Plus, on the good side, a submarine is a lot cheaper to produce and has less crew than any of the big lumbering capital ships our enemies admirals are enamored with.

Our land commander , if needed i would send up against anyone. After all, most of the other nations army commanders read OUR commander's books. Since we live on an island, we went with a saturation bombing strategy. Nothing like the smell of napalm and destruction in the morning. Slap the enemy silly and hope their rinky dink planes dont reach us. Watching over our nation is our eye in the sky.. The first ever man made object up in the sky. Very useful militarily. Much more useful than some silly buildings.

Our diplomatic corps, will be invaluable. Look, our chief diplomat somehow managed to keep his country alive and viable and not eaten by that big bad bear. Plus he did a great job commanding his forces defensively against that same bear. That counts for something.

Economically, we will be strong. Our chief economist is considered the forerunner of modern economics. Top that...... Not discounting western ecomomicists, Muslim economies might be better organized to survive big-ass recessions like the one happening now.

Scientifically we will be strong with our chief scientist being the "father of modern optics"..Very useful in a military society. Plus it doesnt hurt to be considered the pioneer of the modern scientific method and the the founder of experimental psychology. We are in great hands here.

Every martial society needs athletics and who better than ours. The founder of the modern Olympic Games.. One of the best ways to spread our message about our wonderful utopian society is sports. And We have the Olympics. And that leads to our leading artist. A daughter of nobility(Sargon I) and a priestess of the moon, so she will be helping in the field of optics in her spare time as our chief scientist also delved into the field of moon illusion. Her field is poetry and songs. So a scientist, philosopher and poet.

Swinging into the religious field now. Our religion is based on a cosmic struggle: truth and lie.. Our truth, Your lie.......... A major component is poetry and astronomy which meshes well with our science and economics.Unlike most religions which are naturally inclined to butt heads with science, ours will work well together.

Going into civil rights we have someone very capable of commanding our guerilla and insurgent forces which we could use to undermine our enemies rear areas. Freedom for the indigenous peoples in our enemies lands. Spreading the message about our peace and freedom loving people. And on that note. We need someone to keep order in our harmonious society. After all, our enemies will be jealous of our perfect society so they will attempt to destroy it from within using our malcontents and criminally insane. We will not waste time on trials and such.. a lonely field under the moon light...........

And to keep our society strong, our Fearless Leader will hold the country in his warm embrace while keeping his steely gaze ever watchful for enemies far and near.......

The land of Izuldia is one of mountains and coasts, most famed for the tallest mountain in the world (above sea level) in Mount Everest. For years, the mountain has captivated and inspired people all over the world, drawing tourists and potential climbers to spend their money, take pictures and attempt to climb the peak.

With the terrain so mountainous, yet maintaining a coastline, it is little wonder that the nation chooses to engage in colonial endeavors to seek more territory and resources and the famed explorer Robert de La Salle stands at the forefront of this exploration, which will bring prestige and valuable resources to the country.

Izuldia's military expenditures are focused most heavily on the air force, which ranks as the best in the world, with a long and proud tradition of great and heroic pilots, including the world's greatest air combat fighter in Manfred "The Red Baron" von Richthofen. So esteemed is the Izludean's air force that a common saying goes, "If you even think of fighting an Izludean pilot one on one, you've already lost."

With a well-established philosophy of exploration and love of flight in hand, it is little wonder that the nation's future is focused on space exploration. To that end, one of the early fathers of astronomy, Galileo Galilei, leads the kingdom's science division. This ability to look forward and see the horizons beyond will ensure Izludia remains one of the Great Powers even in the coming interstellar age.

The difficult terrain and philosophy of air force first means the focus in the arm is on quality rather than quantity and there is no better to head such a force than Rodrigo "El Cid" Diaz de Vivar, a national hero, despite disadvantageous odds has been able to defeat stronger enemies again and again with fantastic personal valor and shrewd military tactics. It is little wonder that he is a national hero, one who has inspired great literature. He also is a very just commander, acting according to principles of fairness and chivalry in warfare. Furthermore, unlike some of the other military chiefs, he is a proven and capable administrator, able to efficiently govern conquered territory for the kingdom.

Some of El Cid's just behaviors come directly from the Justice Minister, Confucius, whose belief in meritocracy as opposed to inherited position and notation of the importance of maintaining rightful behavior and social relationships has greatly influenced the direction and social fabric of the nation. Although a monarchy, the history of Izludia contains record of kings and queens who have designated their heirs from another house, precisely because the external heir was the most worthy and capable one.

Confucius's philosophies also helped modify the code of laws written by Hammurabi, who is noteworthy as one of the earliest, if not the first man in history to ever set down a code of laws. Although some might argue that his laws were draconian, Confucius's influence ensures that they are fair and not so strict.

Izludia is known as a nation of religious tolerance, unlike other countries who say they are religiously tolerant, but are in fact dominated by one religion, with the paths to highest power barred from religious minorities. Many here still worship the old religions of antiquity and it is little wonder that the father of Wicca and one of the most influential members of the neopagan movement, Gerald Gardner, is the country's most noteworthy religious figure. This religious tolerance has led many brilliant minds and capable individuals who feared religious persecution in their homelands to emigrate to Izludia, where they are truly free to practice their beliefs openly and not be limited in their advancement because of their faith. This brain drain from other countries has been a great boon to the scientific, cultural and financial well-being of the kingdom, ensuring its importance in the world continues.

This religious tolerance holds true even under the reign of Izludia's great ruler, Queen Isabella. She is a mighty monarch with many accomplishments, including uniting virtually all of Iberia, keeping her kingdom of Castile a separate and independent entity from the grubby hands of her husband, Ferdinand of Aragon, and sponsoring the Age of Exploration's first important voyage, that of Christopher Columbus's. As you can see, she fits seamlessly into the nation's philosophy of exploration and a politically gifted unifier is an important head of state to have in a mountain country capable of diversity and possible historical autonomy among its regions.

The chief diplomat, Otto von Bismarck, is another magnificent unifier, illustrated when he forged Germany, bringing together principalities with centuries of independence into one nation. He is also virtually without equal in the art of statecraft and diplomacy, for he was not only able to unify Germany with skilled, almost-Machiavellian diplomacy, he navigated the tangled web of Europe to ensure not only German independence, but German dominance. All these abilities bode well for ensuring the primacy of Izludia. And did we mention he was so great a figure that the still very influential phrase realpolitik, is directly associated with him? And of course, who can forget his stirring Blood and Iron speech?

As one might expect, so rugged a country with the thin air of its mountains produces many great athletes and there is arguably none finer than Jim Brown. A world-class athlete at football and la crosse and exceptional at many other sports, including basketball, his versatility and level of excellence in so many sports is awe-inspiring and the ultimate definition of an athlete. But perhaps most important in his selection as the nation's greatest athlete is that Brown signifies the kingdom's most loved sport - football. In fact, Izludia is the only new nation which has proudly proclaimed its love of and devotion to the gridiron.

These are tumultuous economic times and with Izludia's emphasis on meritocracy, it is little wonder that their economic head should be a proven head of a multinational company rather than a theorist, however renowned. Enter Satoru Iwata, who has completely reversed Nintendo's fortunes. Once written off as a player in the television video console market and facing a crisis of leadership after longtime CEO Hiroshi Yamauchi retired, Iwata engineered Nintendo's return to video console greatness, most famously through the introduction of the Wii. Named one of the world's top CEOs by Barron's, Iwata fits the profile of Izludean rulers who have shown their brilliance in navigating difficult climates and turning challenging situations into fantastic successes.

Izludia is an extremely literate nation and no exemplifies this better than the kingdom's most esteemed artist, author Vladimir Nabokov, whose genius writings, including a vast body of novels, short stories, plays and lectures are simultaneously hilarious and rich in allusion and puzzles for the learned individual to have the reward of catching. Nabokov also signifies the importance of languages in Izludia, as he spoke three languages by age 5 (Russian, English and French) and, despite Russian being his native language, wrote his most famous masterpiece, Lolita, in English. He is also an accomplished professor and lecturer, but, like Brown and many other versatile members of Izludia's most famous members, writing, language acquisition and teaching aren't only his only achievements. He is also a distinguished entomologist, particularly in the area of butterflies and discovered and named many new butterfly species.

And finally we have Izludia's greatest man-made achievement, that of the Paris Metro. The capital city of Jestoria, located on the coast, is one of the most populated and famous cities in the world and traffic congestion would be a problem, were it not for the creation of the Metro. This subway system, one of the busiest in the world, is famed for the beauty of its Art Nouveau architecture and is fast and efficient, with convenient stopping locations in its ability to serve the city and outlying districts. It is such a famous subway, in fact, that some tourists come to Jestoria just to have the pleasure of riding it.

So as you can see, Izludia is a great nation, one assured of being a dominant power and wonderful place to live, both now and in the generations to come.

My goal was to have strong support positions for N'Deacona. This is why I went after the positions that would not have as many notable names in it. Our Naval Leader is one of the predominant men in naval history his battles are legendary.
Our Air leader, may not be a familiar name to many, but in some places it is he, Albert Santos-Dumont, and not the wright brothers that invented heavier than air flight. It can be said that his designs needed no external help to get them off the ground and his results were verifiable in that others could build planes on that design and get them to fly as well, unlike the Wright Brotheres design.
Our Army Leader's name is synonomous with ruthlessness on the battlefield. His presensce can only strengthen the country's interest
Our Chief diplomat, Teddy Roosevelt, is known for his bully diplomacy..Speaking softly and carrying a big stick. However, he is a more than able as a negotiator and peacemaker who ended wars. (Plus he got a Nobel Prize for his efforts.)
For Justice Minister, we chose someone who believes all are under the law, even countries. Asser might not be a name known to the masses but his founding of the World Courts will not only be a boon for our country but the world as a whole.
The person whom they all are strengthening is our leader Chiang Kai-Shek. Not only did he keep a much larger country out of his country, but he also was instrumental in changing thier governing system to democracy.
For those times that our government (or any othe government) oversteps thier bounds, we have a great adversary for those tyrranies in Andrei Sakarov. Another Nobel prize winner who fought the largest country in the world and brought to light governmental abuses.

Outside our govenrment we have other lures as well. Starting with Guru Nanak Dev, the foremost figure in Sihkism and first Guru.
Our country creates extraordinary atheletes like Diego Maradona, one of the best soccer players of all time. Our science is another area of expertise, especially physics led by the great Niels Bohr. Of course lifting the nation's spirits is the father of modern music Johann Sebastian Bach, who organ works and cantatas enrich us all.
Finally after stopping at the great Pyramid we can arrange a trip up into the wonderful Andes mountains. Here we have the richest mine in the history of the world. We have this spine of our country not only supplying us with minerals we can utilize, but one of the better sellling exports as well. As we are home to the the world famous coca tree.

Is this post in the spirit of the draft? I did not come in here to bash the picks of other draft members I chose to praise them and my own draft.

I decided to peruse this for amusement and I have to say I like noop's exactly because it doesn't have a "sexy" pick. It looks like a lot of people went for a name simply to have a name. I think there are all but two or three lineups that have a "deal breaker" for me -- someone on the list who instantly disqualifies that team because that one person eventually will meet their Waterloo.

The theme of my country is a reforming nation that is trying to mend a divisive past and bring about some needed change as well as looking tot he future.
The leader Lincoln will be the cornerstone of this reform effort and mending old wounds from the past.
The civil rights leader Mills was picked due to his emphasis on utilitarianism (founder of it), freedom of speech, liberty, and overall human rights. He will helpbring about a new prosperity where individuals will be able to choose there destiny as opposed to it being forced upon themselves at birth a sin the past in our nation.

Ben Franklin was choosen as the leader of our scientific community due to his skill at discovery, invention and challenging the status quo which will be key to expanding our knowledge and therefore helping us grow as a nation both economically as well intellectually.

Our military will be strong and prepared with a well trained and vigilant army led by Dwight Eisenhower and are fledgling navy will be built from the ground or sea up with the guidance of Peter 1 The Great who helped build the Russian navy and developer them into the seapower they are today. He will help expand are navy both militarily as well as economically through expanded shipping. Our Air Force will be equally prepared to counter any attacks from nations that would see us harmed led by World War I French Ace Fronck who was only surpassed by the Rec Baron in kills.

However, we will match our military preparedness and strength with an equally adept Diplomat in Gorbachev to try to keep the peace. Our nation will seek to resolve conflicts either early on or before they occur at all thus preventing armed conflict when at all possible. Our Diplomatic mission will be to avoid war as long as our national sovereignty is not violated an dwe are free to pursue our defined strategic longterm goals.

One of these long term goals will be grow our economy through the help of renowned economist Schumpter who helped develop the modern concept of entrepreneurism and believe leaders could not be completed trusted to carry out the peoples will.

To further support our nations economic strength we control the rocky mountains and it;s vast untapped resources that include gold, silver, uranium, coal, timber, water and oil assets.

Our nation will be further enhanced by the presence of the great artist Picasso, and Arnold Schwarzenegger who will encourage the citizens of our nation to be fit and spread a system of nation health.

We are to be a nation that follows all religions and is tolernat of many world religions. Our religious leader will be St Patrick who was know a s tolerant and compassionate leader. The Statue of liberty will be our nations national symbol and be the symbol of liberty and justice for all.

DaddyTorgo - Geographical Location - Fertile Crescent, Iraq, Pre-20th Century

The Fertile Crescent is a region in the Near East, incorporating the Levant and Mesopotamia, and often incorrectly extended to Egypt. Mesopotamia is considered the cradle of civilization and saw the development of the earliest human civilizations and is the birthplace of writing and the wheel.

DaddyTorgo - Hannibal Barca, Army Chief, Tunisia, Pre-20th centu ry

Hannibal, son of Hamilcar Barca ,[n 1] commonly known as Hannibal (in Punic: Annobal[dubiousdiscuss], meaning "Ba'al has given me grace"; 248–183 or 182 BC)[n 2][4][5][6][7] was a Carthaginian military commander and tactician who is popularly credited as one of the most talented commanders in history.

One of his most famous achievements was at the outbreak of the Second Punic War, when he marched an army, which included war elephants, from Iberia over the Pyrenees and the Alps into northern Italy. In his first few years in Italy, he won three dramatic victories Trebia, Trasimene and Cannae and won over several Roman allies. Hannibal occupied much of Italy for 15 years, however a Roman counter-invasion of North Africa forced Hannibal to return to Carthage.

Hannibal would later be considered as one of the greatest generals of antiquity, together with Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Scipio, and Pyrrhus of Epirus. Military historian Theodore Ayrault Dodge once famously called Hannibal the "father of strategy",[10] because his greatest enemy, Rome, came to adopt elements of his military tactics in its own strategic arsenal. This praise has earned him a strong reputation in the modern world and he was regarded as a "gifted strategist" by men like Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington.

Maximilian Otto Bismarck Caspari, in his article in the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, praises Hannibal in these words:
As to the transcendent military genius of Hannibal there cannot be two opinions. The man who for fifteen years could hold his ground in a hostile country against several powerful armies and a succession of able generals must have been a commander and a tactician of supreme capacity. In the use of strategies and ambuscades he certainly surpassed all other generals of antiquity. Wonderful as his achievements were, we must marvel the more when we take into account the grudging support he received from Carthage. As his veterans melted away, he had to organize fresh levies on the spot. We never hear of a mutiny in his army, composed though it was of North Africans, Iberians and Gauls. Again, all we know of him comes for the most part from hostile sources. For steadfastness of purpose, for organizing capacity and a mastery of military science he has perhaps never had an equal.[5]

DaddyTorgo - Isaac Newton, Scientist, United Kingdom, Pre-20th Century

Sir Isaac Newton, FRS (4 January 1643 – 31 March 1727 [OS: 25 December 1642 – 20 March 1727])[1] was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist, and theologian and one of the most influential men in human history. His Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, is considered to be among the most influential books in the history of science, laying the groundwork for most of classical mechanics.

In mechanics, Newton enunciated the principles of conservation of both momentum and angular momentum. In optics, he built the first practical reflecting telescope[5] and developed a theory of colour based on the observation that a prism decomposes white light into the many colours which form the visible spectrum. He also formulated an empirical law of cooling and studied the speed of sound.
In mathematics, Newton shares the credit with Gottfried Leibniz for the development of the differential and integral calculus. He also demonstrated the generalised binomial theorem, developed the so-called "Newton's method" for approximating the zeroes of a function, and contributed to the study of power series.

Newton's stature among scientists remains at the very top rank, as demonstrated by a 2005 survey of scientists in Britain's Royal Society asking who had the greater effect on the history of science, Newton or Albert Einstein. Newton was deemed the more influential

DaddyTorgo - Itaipu Dam, Man-made object, Paraguay, 20th Century

Itaipu (Guarani: Itaipu, Portuguese: Itaipu, Spanish: Itaipú; Portuguese pronunciation: [itaiˈpu], Spanish pronunciation: [itaiˈpu]) is a hydroelectric dam on the Paraná River located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay.

Itaipu Binacional is a company that runs the longest operational hydroelectric power plant in the world. It is second only to the Three Gorges Dam in generating capacity. The installed generation capacity of the plant is 14 GW, with 20 generating units of 700 MW each. In the year 2008, it achieved its generating record of 94.68 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh), which supplied 90% of the energy consumed by Paraguay or 19% of that consumed by Brazil.

DaddyTorgo - Jawaharlal Nehru, Ruler/Leader, India, 20th Century

Jawaharlal Nehru (Hindi: जवाहरलाल नेहरू, IPA: [dʐəʋäɦəɾläl nɛɦɾu]; 14 November 1889[3]–27 May 1964) was the first, and is so far the longest-serving, prime minister of independent India, serving from 1947 to 1964.

Nehru was eventually recognized as Gandhi's political heir. A life-long liberal, Nehru was also an advocate for Fabian socialism and the public sector as the means by which long-standing challenges of economic development could be addressed by poorer nations.

As prime minister and as Congress' leader Nehru pushed through India's Parliament, which was dominated by members of his own party, a series of legal reforms intended to emancipate Hindu women and bring equality. These reforms included raising the minimum marriageable age from twelve to fifteen, empowering women to divorce their husbands and inherit property, and declaring illegal the ruinous dowry system. His long tenure was instrumental in shaping the traditions and structures of independent India. He is sometimes referred to as the 'Architect of Modern India'.

Nehru is credited for establishing a widespread system of affirmative action to provide equal opportunities and rights for India's ethnic groups, minorities, women, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes[22][23]. Nehru's passion for egalitarianism meant that he put the state to work to try and end widespread practices of discrimination against women and depressed classes[24], though with limited success in his lifetime.

DaddyTorgo - John Kenneth Galbraith, Economist, United States, 20th

John Kenneth "Ken" Galbraith, OC (October 15, 1908 – April 29, 2006) was a Canadian-American economist. He was a Keynesian and an institutionalist, a leading proponent of 20th-century American liberalism and progressivism. His books on economic topics were bestsellers from the 1950s through the 1970s and he filled the role of public intellectual in this period on matters of economics.

He taught at Harvard University for many years. Galbraith was active in politics, serving in the administrations of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson; and among other roles served as United States Ambassador to India under Kennedy. He was one of the few honorees who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice. He received one in 1946 from President Truman and another in 2000 from President Bill Clinton.

DaddyTorgo - John Marshall, Justice Minister, American, Pre-20th Century

John Marshall (September 24, 1755 – July 6, 1835) was an American statesman and jurist who shaped American constitutional law and made the Supreme Court a center of power. Marshall was Chief Justice of the United States, serving from February 4, 1801, until his death in 1835.

The longest serving Chief Justice in Supreme Court history, Marshall dominated the Court for over three decades (a term outliving his own Federalist Party) and played a significant role in the development of the American legal system. Most notably, he established that the courts are entitled to exercise judicial review, the power to strike down laws that violate the Constitution. Thus, Marshall has been credited with cementing the position of the judiciary as an independent and influential branch of government. Furthermore, Marshall made several important decisions relating to Federalism, shaping the balance of power between the federal government and the states during the early years of the republic. In particular, he repeatedly confirmed the supremacy of federal law over state law and supported an expansive reading of the enumerated powers.

As the young nation was endangered by regional and local interests that often threatened to fracture its hard-fought unity, Marshall repeatedly interpreted the Constitution broadly so that the Federal Government had the power to become a respected and creative force guiding and encouraging the nation's growth. Thus, for all practical purposes, the Constitution in its most important aspects today is the Constitution as John Marshall interpreted it.

DaddyTorgo - Klemens Wenzel, Prince von Metternich, Chief Diplomat Austria, Pre-20th Century

Klemens Wenzel, Prince von Metternich (German: Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar, Fürst [1] von Metternich-Winneburg zu Beilstein) (May 15, 1773June 11, 1859) was a German-Austrian politician and statesman and was one of the most important diplomats of his era.[2] He was a major figure in the negotiations before and during the Congress of Vienna and is considered both a paradigm of foreign-policy management and a major figure in the development of diplomatic praxis. He was the archetypal practitioner of 19th-century diplomatic realism, being deeply rooted in the postulates of the balance of power.

Metternich was the architect of what he hoped would be an enduring European peace. For the next 30 years he would dominate foreign policy in Europe. In the view of some historians, the self-styled "coachman of Europe" had brought modern world history into being.

Metternich has earned the admiration of succeeding generations for his brilliant management of foreign policy. Henry Kissinger idolized Metternich and studied him closely. He wrote his Harvard University Ph.D. dissertation, later published in 1957 under the title A World Restored: Metternich, Castlereagh and the Problems of the Peace 1812-1822, on the European negotiations towards the achievement of a balance of power after Waterloo, and praised Metternich's role in holding together the crumbling Austrian Empire.

DaddyTorgo - Themistocles, Naval Chief, Greece, Pre-20th century

Themistocles (Greek: Θεμιστοκλῆς); c. 524–459 BC, was an Athenian politician and general. He was one of a new breed of politicians who rose to prominence in the early years of the Athenian democracy, along with his great rival Aristides. As a politician, Themistocles was a populist, having the support of lower class Athenians, and generally being at odds with the Athenian nobility. Elected archon in 493 BC, he took steps to increase the naval power of Athens, which would be a recurring theme in his political career. During the first Persian invasion of Greece, he fought at the Battle of Marathon, and was probably one of the 10 Athenian strategoi (generals) in that battle.

In the years after Marathon, and in the run up to the second Persian invasion he became the most prominent politician in Athens. He continued to advocate a strong Athenian navy, and in 483 BC he persuaded the Athenians to build a fleet of 200 triremes; these would prove crucial in the forthcoming conflict with Persia. During the second invasion, he was in effective command of the Greek allied navy at the battles of Artemisium and Salamis. Thanks to subterfuge on the part of Themistocles, the Allies possessed all the advantages at Salamis, and the decisive Greek victory there was the turning point in the invasion, which was ended the following year by the defeat of the Persians at the Battle of Plataea.
After the conflict ended, Themistocles continued to be pre-eminent amongst Athenian politicians.

Salamis was the turning point in the second Persian invasion, and indeed the Greco-Persian Wars in general.[70] Whilst the battle did not end the Persian invasion, it effectively ensured that all Greece would not be conquered, and allowed the Allies to go on the offensive in 479 BC. A significant number of historians have stated that Salamis is one of the most significant battles in human history.[71][72][73] Since it was his long-standing advocacy of Athenian naval power which enabled the Allied fleet to fight at all, and it was his stratagem that brought about the Battle of Salamis, it is probably not an exaggeration to say, as Plutarch does, that Themistocles "is thought to have been the man most instrumental in achieving the salvation of Hellas".

DaddyTorgo - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Artist, Austria, Pre-20th

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (German pronunciation: [ˈvɔlfɡaŋ amaˈdeus ˈmoːtsart], full name Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart[1] (27 January 1756 – 5 December 1791), was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. He composed over six hundred works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, piano, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers.

Mozart always learned voraciously from others, and developed a brilliance and maturity of style that encompassed the light and graceful along with the dark and passionate—the whole informed by a vision of humanity "redeemed through art, forgiven, and reconciled with nature and the absolute".[2] His influence on all subsequent Western art music is profound. Beethoven wrote his own early compositions in the shadow of Mozart, of whom Joseph Haydn wrote that "posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years".

Okay, now that I have given background on ALL of my picks, let me explain my nation.

I intend my nation "Torgoistan" to be a tolerant and progressive liberal nation. For this reason I selected Nehru as my ruler - someone with a demonstrated history of working for equality. He will be supported in this by Martin Luther King, and the economic policies of John Kenneth Galbraith. Chief Justice John Marshall will ensure that we have a strong federal government for Nehru and Galbraith's policies.

The Fertile Crescent will provide an ideal location for my fledgling nation, and the Itaipu Dam will provide all of the power that our nation requires through hydroelectricity.

Isaac Newton provides impressive scientific muscle for our nation and will lead our intellectual pursuits.
Martin Luther will provide a strong foundation for our religious faith - unafraid to question the hierarchy, and promoting the relationship between the individual and God.
Mozart will lead the artists of our nation in providing works for the world as a whole to enjoy.
Alexander Karelin is an unquestioned master athlete who will represent us powerfully on the international stage.

The triumvirate of Hannibal Barca, Mordechai Hod, and Themistocles lead our defense forces. Hannibal is a tactical genuis and has been recognized as such for centuries. Mordechai Hod is accustomed to defending our airspace against any potential threats. Themistocles is not only a skilled naval strategist, but is also an accomplished politician and advocate of naval power.

Metternich as our Chief Diplomat is prepared to inagurate a World Congress to keep the international peace and work towards maintaining a balance of power and resolving differences peacefully.
