NCAA 2004 Dynasty: Buffalo Bulls
2003 BUFFALO BULLS DYNASTY REPORTThis is a dynasty that will be played with NCAA 2004 on the PS2 with All-American sliders heavily favoring the CPU with 9 minute quarters. I will be playing all of the games and have taken over as the head coach of Buffalo. I have also taken over Connecticut and Notre Dame but will be doing nothing with those squads. I am hoping that they get an invite to a major conference. There will be no house rules. The goal is to turn Buffalo into a MAC power with the ultimate goal of an invite to the Big East and a National Championship. I have already played the 2003 season with the Bulls going (4-8, 2-6) and managing their first ever MAC road win over Miami. Wk 1: @Rutgers W 34-24 Wk 2: @ Iowa L 45-10 Wk 3: vs. Columbia W 37-10 Wk 4: vs. Connecticut (Rival) L 35-24 Wk 5: vs. Akron L 34-17 Wk 6: @ Central Florida L 49-10 Wk 7: @ Miami (Ohio) W 26-13 Wk 8: vs. Marshall L 45-13 Wk 9: vs. Ohio W 10-3 Wk 10: @ Toledo L 33-6 Wk 11: vs. Northern Illinois L 55-3 Wk 13: @ Kent State L 30-13 After a 2-2 start, the Bulls lost three straight. The Akron game saw UB come back from down 21-3 to close it to 21-17 in the fourth before an interception return sealed their fate. The win at Miami was huge as the Bulls forced seven turnovers and played their best game of the year. The final five games were an offensive struggle as turnovers and inconsistant running of the ball constantly had the Bulls in a hole that they could not dig out of. Overall, it was a three game improvement in wins from 2002 and the AD gave Coach Hofher a B- job security rating. 2004 Recruits 5 star recruits None 4 star recruits DE Jodie Butler, NY – 79 3 star recruits LE Jamelle Haney, NY – 65 HB Grant Cummings, OK – 70 FS Luke Jenkins, NC - 67 2 star recruits FS Xavier Cassell, ME – 62 FS Tra Garcia, NJ – 62 WR Vance Callahan, MA – 66 G Tremayne May, NY – 65 CB Ronnie Moses, DE - 71 1 star recruits MLB Casey Robbins, NJ – 60 WR Antwaun Smith, NY – 58 Due to a severe lack of talent on the 2003 roster, all but two of these recruits will see action. A. Smith and G. Cummings were redshirted. We end up with the 8th best class in the MAC and the 73rd overall class. MAC Recruiting: 1. Central Florida (National Rank: 28) 2. Western Michigan (40) 3. I have completed the 2004 season also and will summarize below:
Week #1 vs. Hofstra The Bulls opened the season against I-AA Hofstra at UB Stadium in a game that was supposed to be an easy test and to let all the new players get their feet wet. The Pride had other ideas as they jumped out to a 17-0 lead and led 17-7 at the half. After some adjustments to the defense at halftime (zone defense) the Bulls held Hofstra in check in the second half, yet still trailed 17-10 entering the fourth. After a game tying TD pass from Randall Secky to Aaron Leeper, JJ Gibson picked off a Hoftsra pass and raced 97 yards down the left sideline to put UB up for good in a 31-24 thriller. Secky was 16-33 for 341 yards and 3 TDs. Week #2 @ Temple The Bulls made the trip to Philadelphia to play the Owls in Lincoln Financial Field. Unfortunately, only about 500 people showed up. Undeterred, the Bulls pounded the Owls 30-10 to improve to 2-0. Week #3 vs. Rutgers Buffalo was looking to beat the Scarlet Knights for the third straight year and they would. JJ Gibson returned another INT for a score and the Bulls routed Rutgers 42-10. A 3-0 start had the AD mentioning a contract extension. Week #4 @ Connecticut The Bulls were brought back down to earth as the Huskies jumped out to a 29-3 halftime leaden route to a 36-10 victory ending the Bulls win streak at 3. Week #6 @ Akron After a very positive non-conference schedule the Bulls opened their MAC schedule in Akron at the Rubber Bowl. This game would be an example of things to come in the MAC as the Zips pounded the Bulls 56-6. Week #7 vs. Central Florida If last week’s loss wasn’t bad enough, the Bulls appeared to hit rock bottom when the Golden Knights visited. The Bulls trailed 14-0 at the end of the first quarter when this bizzare series of events occurred. After a UCF score, Vance Callahan returned the kickoff 93 yards for a TD. A. Hayes then returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards to put UCF back up 28-7. Vance Callahan proceeded to return the next kickoff 88 yards for another TD. Back-to-back-to-back kickoff returns! The rest of the game was a complete fiasco as UCF rolled to a 77-21 win. Week #8 vs. Miami (OH) The hangover from the previous three blowout losses was evident early as UB truned the ball over 5 times in the first half and trailed 27-0 at the break and lost 33-7 to drop to (3-4, 0-3). Week #9 @ Marshall Just as the Bulls season turned around in Storrs, Connecticut in Week #4, it made another 180 in Huntington, WV in Week #9. The Bulls scored on their opening drive and led 3-0 until late in the first half. The Herd would take the lead as Stan Hill ran a keeper for a five yard score with just :31 left in the half. Brian Watson then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Marshall returned it 17 yards for a devastating score. Unlike the previous four games, the Bulls did not fold up the tents but put forth a tremendous effort pulling within 3 at 14-11 after Randall Secky hit Matt Kneuven with a 15 yard TD pass. The comeback would end on the final play as Secky was picked off in the Marshall endzone to seal a 14-11 win for the Herd. But even in the loss, the Bulls seemed to turn a corner as a team that believed that it could compete. Week #10 @ Ohio Buffalo broke their five game losing streak with an impressive 33-23 win in Athens, Ohio. Aaron Leeper ran for 111 yards and caught 6 passes for 78 yards scoring 2 TDs. Week #11 vs. Toledo Full of confidence the Bulls hung with Toledo for three quarters before giving up 15 fourth quarter points in a 44-23 loss. Trailing just 29-23, Aaron Leeper fumbled at the Rocket 17 yard line which sealed the Bulls fate. Week #12 @ Northern Illinois The Huskies came into this game (6-3, 3-2) with postseason hopes and a three game win streak. They would take a devastating blow to their season as UB stunned the Huskies 38-24. Vance Callahan scored on a 78 yard TD reception, a 68 yard punt return and a 94 yard kickoff return. He was named the National Player of the Week. Week #14 vs. Kent State After turning their season around at Marshall the Bulls were looking to finish at .500 with a strong finish against Kent State. Instead, Joshua Cribbs ripped the Bulls apart as the Golden Flashes scored 44 first half points and cruised to a 58-31 win. The Bulls fell to (5-7, 2-6) and finished in last place in the MAC East. 1. vs. Hoftsra, W, 31-24 2. @ Temple, W, 30-10 3. vs. Rutgers, W, 42-10 4. @ Connecticut, L, 36-10 6. @ Akron, L, 56-6 7. vs. Central Florida, L, 77-21 8. vs. Miami (OH), L, 33-7 9. @ Marshall, L, 14-11 10. @ Ohio, W, 33-23 11. vs. Toledo, L, 44-23 12. @ Northern Illinois, W, 38-24 14. vs. Kent State, L, 58-31 It was a roller coaster ride of a season as the Bulls began with three straight wins, lost five straight, then alternated wins and loses down the stretch. This young team showed some progress, but needs a big recruiting year to move to that next level.

The Offense was overall a bit better, while the defense slipped form 32nd to 83rd. Another reason why the Bulls record did not improve was a -9 giveaway/takeaway compared to +4 last year.

2004 RECRUITINGThe following is a summary of the 2004 recruiting class. This is Jim Hofher’s second class. The Bulls program has been upgraded to a 2 star program following their 5-7 campaign. The Bulls will have 218 recruiting points with which to work. Player’s Leaving: C Eric Weber (Junior): Eric was a First team All-American and was ready to declare for the NFL draft before Jim Hofher convinced him to stay. (Total recruiting points used: 10) T Zack Love (Junior): Zack was a semifinalist for the Best OL and also wanted to leave for the draft. Coach Hofher was able to convince him to stay. Love was our best returning player and it was very important that he return. (Total recruiting points used: 30) QB Randall Secky (Ovr: 74): He graduates with less than stellar stats and a career record of 10-26 as a starter. He had 22 TD passes and 43 interceptions in his final two years. TE Marc Brereton (59): A career backup. RG Eric Zeppuhur (72): A stud on the right side, he will be missed. LG Dan Minochi (71): A 1st team All-American will be sorely missed on the left side. RG Tommy Miles (60): A reserve player. LE Adrian Adriano (71): An adequate starter but not much else. DT Sam Atuatasi (71): A JUCO transfer that didn’t make much of an impact. LB Rob Morris (69): A steady linebacker that started all the games the past two seasons. CB Amos Baines (65): Started his final 8 games. FS J.J. Gibson (79): Probably UB’s best defensive player the past two seasons with 13 INTs and a player who was not afraid to lay the lumber. Team Ratings by Position and needs: QB: C- (2) RB: C (2) FB: D+ (1) WR: C- (1) TE: C (1) T: C+ G: C (2) C: C (1) DE: C DT: C- (2) OLB: C (2) MLB: D+ (2) CB: C FS: C- SS: D+ (2) K: B P: C- 5 star recruits None 4 star recruits DT Thomas Ryan, NJ - 73 3 star recruits QB Garry Wiggins, NY - 65 DT Ray Pearson, NY - 71 TE Brian Falls, NY - 72 2 star recruits MLB Ross Williams, NY - 65 OLB Jeremy Drew, NY – 68 1 star recruits DT Chris Chapman, PA – 58 A pretty thin class but it looks as though 6 of the seven recruits may be starters come opening day. This is not exactly what Jim Hofher was looking for as he has a roster with 22 seniors. If he should be offered a contract extension he is going to need a monster class next year. The Bulls recruiting class was ranked 93rd in the nation and 11th in the MAC. 2004 MAC Recruiting: 1. Kent State (National: 19) 2. Central Florida (20) 3. Western Michigan (29) 4. Akron (31) 5.
